1. Possibly the mains switch gone, maybe a fuse but they tend to just "go" rather than be intermittent for a while. The tech guys at Marshall have always been really good when I've used them, they'd also tell you that they're the only official repairers of Marshall, shops are only "authorised" sellers. Might be worth giving them a bell (01908 375411), I've often had a diagnosis over the phone & told whether it's worth sending back or getting a shop to do an easy fix. Good bit about having Marshall do a repair is that they always overhaul the amp, don't just fix the fault reported. But then you have the issue of being amp-less while it's away. You could hope Dawsons will squeeze it in to the guarantee period?
 2.
That's so cool! Would be nice to read it.
Thanx! I've had two house moves since then; I'll keep an eye out for where I stashed the mag.
 3. When my bass was first built I was asked to write a piece on it. A few weeks after publication I received another copy of it through the post from "some bloke" who had written on the page Sorry about the crap scan - I'll have to get round to rescanning it some day. To make the bass more usable I've had to have a couple of things changed on it, which Jaydee did to keep it in the Birch fold.
 4. John Taylor is also doing the "Tracks Of My Years" on Ken Bruce's Radio 2 show this week - on even as I type; haven't heard of him having s'thing to promote but it's always possible.
 5.
While you're at it get Elmer Fudd to write an article on Wabbit hunting.
It's duck season. Wabbit season! Duck season! Wabbit season! Duck season! Duck season! BANG!
 6.
Aww thank god someone else feels like this I'm not alone in the none fender liking wilderness
Oh we're going straight to hell for that one; watch out on there!
 7.
I'd love it if all my bass lines were 100% how I wanted them to be/sound.. but guess that's the Holy Grail of bass playing, at least it seems to be to me
And then when you achieved that, is usually the point where you realise it wasn't one you've just created in a sweep of inspiration, but the line to a song you played & really liked on a CD two or three months previously & left lying next to the hi-fi.
 8.
We were discussing this over break in work today and nobody could agree on anything.
You're lucky to work with folk who know enough to hold a conversation about the subject; most folk I know barely know the difference between a bass & a guitar! For me - I don't like Fender basses; too generic (yeah I know they more or less created the genre that they're generic of), too bass-ic. That also includes basses that claim to be different but are also more or less Fender's in disguise. To the opposite extreme those GUS basses are damn ugly too, fair enough they're being different, but they look too much like they're made up in a plumbers yard. Them basses that look more like a lyre; but I think it was agreed somewhere on here that they're not technically "basses". I like Rick's cos they look aggressive for anything heavy; whether that's because I've been a Motorhead fan since their early days I dunno. Haven't got one; but I wouldn't mind a good copy so I can rework it's guts without wasting £££s. SG shapes I like, got 3; two basses & a guitar - had a Gibson EB3 years ago, should have kept it.
 9.
I think there's far more value in the real human opinions and input you get from discussing the topics on a place like this,
I mused about this while trawling WHS for some card this aft. I can't remember the last time I bought any musical instrument magazine; possibly around Xmas/NY time. Of those who bought one recently who has found enough in it that couldn't be found in this forum, Youtube or a simple i'net search that justified the cover price? Hasten to add, it's not the cost of magazines that put me off (though I do object to the price going up to justify the free CD/mug coaster on some guitar mags); it's just that I've seldom found anything worth buying of late.
 10.
Who started this thread.. Victor Meldrew?
He actually bowed to the consensus way back on post #7 and hasn't replied since; but that's never stopped the bones of a thread to be gnawed at before.
 11.
thanks, I know. but my tech said if I don't push the amp I should be safe until I can afford it.
I was told that as well by trusted valve amp techs, but it's worth a peek at your caps & if they have bulges on the ends to any degree, especially if they're near the join with the metal sides then they're living on borrowed time. These two are mild in my Hiwatt 200 (1976) It's not unknown for trannies to be taken out with a serious failure and assuming yours has lovely vintage Partridges in it you'd be a lucky guy to find replacements. This is all stuff I was told by several vintage valve amp specialists across two forums and many emails, some talking from bitter experience - I'm taking no chances with my Hiwatt, it's not getting used at all until the caps are done - you should be talking less than £100 - worth the risk?
 12. 13. They're not hiding their address; maybe one of the London contingent could looksee sometime to see if it's a legit shop or just a registered address? Contact info IMD DIGITAL LTD. 219 Kensington High Street, London
 14. I'd still say Jimmy Lea............... and Lemmy, Mark King would get a look in too, +1 for Foxton, Duck Dunn.............. *starts taking shoes & socks off to count the other names I can think of* edit: so it was as per
Not sure if you mean many threads, each dedicated to one specific person or not?
Hmm, yeah - a valid point if it didn't end up like Planet Rock with pages of similar threads with *insert name here*. Last thing we want is BC to start being like Talkbass!!!
 15. If it was me, & I've done similar with gun-stocks in the long past; I'd be looking for a "scraper" (a cabinet makers tool for fine finishing), but you need a small one, so maybe a very blunt but not dented stanley knife blade, a lot of time, patience & elbow grease with the blade scraping with very light pressure with the grain, (along the neck NOT across it) with the blade at a slightly forward than vertical angle. Once you get down to bare wood use a light dose of lemon oil on a lint free cloth. Maybe try it on a couple of the narrow spaces at the dusty end first to see what you think?
 16. As you say there are a few to particular players already, you could do a search for whoever you're impressed with & if nothing appears start one yourself. Not sure if you mean many threads, each dedicated to one specific person or not? There is this http://basschat.co.uk/topic/178852-ok-your-top-10-bassists-of-all-time/ which appears to be close to what I think you said & there were others long ago. So long as no-one turns it into an attack on others personal tastes or an exercise in who likes the most obscure player they're generally interesting enough.
 17.
I'd save time and money and get the SM-58, it's rugged and will do the job just fine.
^This! What's the old saying about not buying cheap but only buying once?
 18. Far more fun...........
 19. If you've learnt anything from it, it wasn't that big a disaster?
 20.
We agree to a pretty low fee on the basis that he will book us for future gigs and pay us a decent amount once he's seen us.
Has this - or does this ever happen? I've heard it used as a carrot to get bands to play a bigger place than they would normally, but IF the "promoter" was genuinely interested before forking out for a gig he would make a point of catching you at one of your usual gigs, n'est pas?
 21.
I met a fella recently who claimed to have a Jaydee Flying V guitar...now that's going to be unusual..
There was one up on Ebay a couple of years ago. Dave Hill had one of his Explorers in the early '80s & there was one of those on Ebay last year.
 22.
NGBD (New Gibson Bass Day) - 2001 Gibson SG-Z bass:
Oooh - an SG-Z - I was amazed when they first came out - kept the magazine review of it for a very long time and was SO close to getting one, but the ex-SWMBO said it was too like the custom I'd just got. Are the taps original? I didn't notice them before.
 23. Barbarellas; infamous as the place in 1979 where Noddy Holder had his No.1 guitar - a customised 1961 SG Junior nicked by a punter "helping" the crew to load up the trucks.
 24. To be fair auditioning for a band called "The DamnWe'reCrap" should have given you a warning.
 25.
I got the 2x15 so cheap because I had to travel to the ar5e end of london to go get it
I got mine for £75 delivered from John Henry's hire place about 8 years ago. Cost another £120 for Eminenece Deltas that are now in it.
