1.
This thread has me wondering how frets are levelled with a graphite neck that has a predetermined amount of relief and no truss rod installed (this is based on me believing that you need to have a level fingerboard before you can level the frets).
Interesting point. I never thought about that. You'd sort of have to follow the curve so to speak?
2. So, I came back to the Modulus last night (hectic week) and got it playing perfectly. (realised the way I was measuring before was all wrong as Manton suggests!). I used the business card method/rough measurement at the 8th fret and also allowed it to settle (I think I was too hasty before in this regard). I also had a little rejig of the saddles made sure they are level and low and Suddenly BOOM there's my Flea again! The neck when I bought it was dead straight. Which probably worked with a heavier gauge of string creating more tension. However there is still a VERY 'slight' buzz that does remain curiously on the a+e strings so I'm definitely thinking it might need some light fret work on payday. Nethertheless it's good fun playing about with stuff and figuring things out. Thanks for the input guys
3. This makes my brain hurt even thinking about it!
4. From a lower budget perspective, I'm using an AKG P2. Unbelievably good bass mic for less than £80. Nice crisp detailed sound with no inherent scoop. .
5. IIRC those Yamaha's retailed at £299 about 10 years ago. So 2nd hand value, even for a minter wouldn't be much more than £150. I'd keep the Fender (it's worth considerably more. You'd be getting done somewhat in a trade)
6.
I didn't know Wayne, or really have anything to do with him. He seems to be very popular with people I do know so I'll have to give him the benefit of the doubt... but to be honest from what I saw of his posting on BC most of it seemed flippant, rude and aggressive... with a slight air of self importance. I suspect there is more to the banning than meets the eye...
THIS^
7. I have been dipping my toe in and out of Basschat since 2009 ish. I didn't really get involved for a couple of those years as IMO it seemed quite cliquey (it's nowhere near as bad now). I don't think it has changed much to be honest in the 6 years since I joined. One thing I will say is I do find it quite an aggressive forum nowadays, hence why I pick and choose what I will comment on carefully. It's got very finicky and people will take any opportunity to pull you up on anything and it is almost like a pointscoring thing. HOWEVER there are some truely wonderful, helpful guys and gals on here and it's still the best musical related forum on the web I think
8. Thanks Manton! I thought the same when thinking about what frets but I guess I'm just comparing it to my Jazz subconsciously, which plays beautifully and buzz free with relatively little relief. I'll try a bit more on the modulus and report back! Edit - also going to try to measure it in mm precisely. I could be wildly out, my eyes aren't what they used to be (only 29)
9. Funnily enough I thought my Epi T-Bird was very versatile. I did a few sessions with it of varying genres and it always sounded great. I also personally thought the slap tone was fantastic! Real growly thump to it.
10. It's mostly concentrated around the 3-8th frets on strungs A+D. I haven't measured precisely but tried running roughly around 2-3mm to no avail. 4ish now and still quite buzzy. Thing is, when I first bought it, it was running a thicker gauge of string and didn't really do it so badly, soon as I put 40-95's it got far worse. And has remained that way even adding in relief. Odd.
11. Played a mid-late 70's 4001 not that long ago. An underwhelming experience to be honest. Didn't grab me. The looks however are just stunnning IMO.
12. Evening BC'ers Was always under the impression that you could get super low on graphite necks without having to tweak the truss rod. My Flea really doesn't like a low action without a fair bit of relief in the neck. Couple of questions relating to this; 1 - what on earth did people do before they started putting rods in graphite necks?! There's only so much saddle height can help 2 - it buzzes particulary bad on the A and D string, thinking it's a fret issue possibly (although they show minimal wear) Any thoughts/musings? Cheers! Edit - my Jazz puts it to shame in this dept, I'm running the action, buzz free, lower than Barry White's B******s

Fender MIM

I've said a couple of times before but I think since 2009 ish, it has been a bit of a golden period for the Mexico factory. My 2010 Jazz is absolutely superb. Lightweight, flawless fretwork and beautifully finished. Tonally it's big and punchy with a crisp growl. It knocks spots off of the other Jazzes i've owned and played (including the Geddy Lee and Marcus Miller I owned). A couple of my mates have Mexi Guitars (Baja Tele and Standard Strat) and they are both hugely impressive, well finished instruments. I think the current Mexico line is being slept on (as much as can be with a Fender) It really is a different kettle of fish atm to previous years (by all accounts). I'm sure there are still some poor ones but (cliche alert) that is the same of every Fender range.
14. I'm a big fan of Noel. The flippant manner of his opinions is no different to how my friends and I talk about music and I suspect most of it is exaggerated on purpose anyway. A quite intelligent and interesting bloke underneath the bluster. Granted Oasis's output post 3rd album is awful but those first 2 albums are just frigging genius.
15. £1000. REALLY?!! I honestly wouldn't pay more than £20 for this shower of s***e. But then again the price of a bass directly corresponds to the amount of strings. MOAR STRINGZ = MOAR $
16. My Flea has the obp-1. All I can say is it has an almost unreal amount of power on tap. So much gain (almost too much). The bass control is very powerful and subtle. The treble has a wide range and almost acts like a tone control too. Great pre-amp. More musical useful settings than the Glockenlang I had on my Sandberg.
17. Absolutely stunning, I had a TRB4II, great basses. Impeccable quality and tone. Glwts!
18. Modern class D stuff I've tried on the whole definitely seems to be lacking that all encompassing shove that my Trace has. I'm sure the manufacturers will get there though. Until then, its big blocks of iron for me! (That said even though my gp12 smx is heavy for a head, in the grand scheme of things it's not.. I can still lift it easily)
19. I love the first two Oasis albums! Irrelevant after that though. Noel is actually quite a sound guy, always interesting to listen to. Liam on the other hand is a second rate Ian Brown wannabe. Definitely agree he'd be in prison if not in a band.

Elbow

Saw them at V Move 2004/5. One of the best live performances I've ever seen, Pete's Ashdown kept crapping out towards the end though. His Les Paul bass sounded huge!!
21.
Cheers for the ideas. Yorick, I had raised the pickup slightly. I'll try raising it a little more. 40Hz, I didn't even know about the string twist issue. I'll slacken the string off and see if I can see any twist in it. I'll also be a lot more careful when stringing up in the future. H.
I never even knew about it myself until recently, restrung my Flea and the E just sounded absolute pants, lifeless and dull and just weird. Restrung it again, making sure it was straight from the ball end to winding with no twist and it came back to life. Odd.
