Anyone spotted this on the crack coverters website? https://www.cashconverters.co.uk/shop/music-tv--video/musical-instruments/guitars--string-instruments/bass-guitar/047300072685

Also i note there are no pup or bridge cover holes, or thumbrest holes for that matter - is that normal on 80's fenders?

Not necessarily truly 'vintage' but what's everyone's thoughts on this tasty looking jazzer over at bass Bros:- https://bassbros.co.uk/product/1982-fender-jazz-bass/ Down as an '82 but the Fender serial lookup thingy comes up as a '78. Not seen a bounded dot neck before and as someone who is a recent jazz convert and looking for a nice older bass this is ticking a few boxes!

Just to update. We had our first rehearsal with the spyder last night. Played a groundwound loaded Jazz bass into an Eden 4x10. I was worried at how much quieter the spyder seemed at home playing than my ABM400. However, once i had my sound dialed in - none of the shift buttons engaged, bass and treble boosted slightly and mids rolled off a little - and the jazz to 100% neck pickup, 25% bridge pickup and tone rolled off a little bit, it was glorious. Ive set the amp with the gain at around 75% and the volume at 12 oclock and it was nice, even, slightly growly and very beefy. Currently in its belly is a Tung Sol 12AX7 in v1 and a Sovtek 12AX7B in V2. As mentioned before these dont really do full on grit even with the gain maxed but it does have a lovely warm sound and IMHO a much clearer tone than the ABM

So, i was selling my ABM 400 with the idea of going to a combo but a Spyder 330 came up locally at a decent price and peaked my memories of one i had years back. Now, these things are pretty quiet for supposed 300w at 4ohms - my ABM 400 is MILES louder but the core tone is lovely. A bit of a one trick pony with no much in the way of EQ but lovely nonetheless. I remember years ago i did a bit of valve swapping in my 550 combo and to be fair it did make quite a difference (better or worse is subjective). Was wondering if any members on here are regular spyder users - either the 550 or 330 - and has done any valve swapping? The pre in these is designed to be clean and warm rather than providing much in the way of grit but im sure ive read people who put different 12ax7's in to coax a little more growl out of them.

Had a great tone with my ABM last night using the pre-shape button but also leaving the EQ on and boosting the mids a little. I also have an Ashdown Spyder - would replicating the preshape on the ABM just be a case of scooping the mids on the spyder and boosting the bass and treble? Is it that simple?

A real shame as their flats and halfrounds in particular were fantastic. They did seem to change the recipe towards the end though and their newer flats were never quite as good as the original silkless ones

Which bass do you want, even though you shouldn't?
Pow_22 replied to BassAgent's topic in Bass Guitars
Theres a vintage jazz bass doing the rounds on reverb and FB at £3k. 74 sunburst, all the right mojo, mainly original bar the pickguard. Ive literally just bought a cheap jazzer so i can leave my p bass at home on 'dodgy' gigs but that still doesnt mean im not looking to sell EVERYTHING for the jazz on reverb! -
Think i may be looking to invest in one if/when my ABM shifts!

I like Will’s pricing too, more realistic then a lot of other vintage bass specialists

Ive read lots about these supposed ‘classic’ old amps but have never heard one in person. Ive picked up a cheapo Eden cab recently and the OCD nature in me has me looking at Eden heads. Research suggests they are clean but warm amps where the pre amp valve does very little i.e no breakup or growl but a general even deep/warm tone. I do like a slight ‘valveyness’ to my tone and a little growl but do have a few pre amp pedals that could provide this if needed. So, whilst they appear to have been discontinued for a while and eden are not the same of old does anyone here use one that can chip in with tonal comments?

@AndyTravis she certainly is. Wearing Elites Groundwounds and due in for a set up soon. Have thought about ‘upgrading’ the pickups but to be honest sounds glorious as it 👌

Matthew bought my Ampeg cab in a motorway services meetup, had a good geeky bass gear chat and no issues whatsoever

Old thread resurrection but did anyone try these yet at all? Price seems ridiculous for the supposed quality

As per my ampeg cab ad, im moving to a combo so this must go. One of the very first ABM’s (originally called Klystron) to come out from the early days of Ashdown. Tatty case but fully functional and sounds like an ABM should. Has a EHX 12ax7 fitted. Collection from Bolton or meet up possible. From Ashdown:- ...AND SO THE ABM WAS BORN And so the ABM was born, simultaneously setting new standards in tonal flexibility, power and reliability. The original name for these first amps was Klystron Bass Magnifier, inspired by a scene from Flash Gordon (one of Gooday's favourite movies) in which Doctor Zarkoff says: “Turn up the Klystron Magnifier”. The huge images of power depicted in the movie sat perfectly with the image and the sound Ashdown wanted to portray. With the name morphing to ABM (Ashdown Bass Magnifier), these early units were built by Gooday, his wife Jane, son Dan, and daughter Daisy in the living room of the family home every evening, allowing him to visit dealers and artists in the daytime. It didn't take long for the reputation of these incredible new amplifiers to get around.

Does anyone here use one of these trouble free? Basically on paper they look perfect for my current needs and there are a few appearing used for sale. However, my usual pre-purchase digging is just bringing up lots of horror stories (mainly on talkbass i may add) of unreliable power amp sections. Im also aware though that for every bad story there are quiet happy users. I like the idea of a valve pre amp combo with the option of the vintage and modern settings and read that the b15 inspired vintage setting cops a great tone. Im aware that the driver wont put out anywhere near 600w but volume isnt generally to much of an issue with my current band. So, any happy users here or are all the horror stories true?
