1.
Colin, did the mod alter the tone in any way?
It made the volume pot far more useable and made the tone 'less harsh' to my ears. I don't know if you've seen this, but it contains quite a bit of info about various mods and replacements.
2. No real way of posting any meaning full sound clips, I'm afraid. The expense of the volume mod is just a 25K log pot and, with the GFS pick-up, I don't feel the need to upgrade to a stinger pre-amp. The pre-amp before the mod was useless.
3. Congrats - I've got one of these and they're great basses. I did the volume fix described towards the bottom of this thread page - starting at post #340. It made a big difference and I haven't felt the need for the stinger pre-amp. However - I swapped the Pick-up for a GFS MM pro plus (here) and I felt that was a big improvement. I'll post up some piccies of mine next week now I've got it in it's final form.
4. Stop posting things like this! I'm trying to save money FFS. Geez.

LPB-1 squeezed into a 1590A enclosure: It works well with guitar, really pushing the input to a valve amp and working well into a tubescreamer and American Sound pedal. With bass it's good, but overloads on a heavily hit bottom E.

Thanks Si. I'll look into those. I've built my LPB-1 in a 1590A box so there's very little room to do anything.

oooo - could you tell me what an LED anti-pop circuit is please. I've got pop-problems with my LPB-1 boost clone and I've done the usual 1M to the board input, but still getting probs. Thanks. I'm waiting for my Madbean Afterlife Compressor PCB as I write!
8. You could get the BG250 2x8" combo for the same price as the BH250. It allows you to add an 8ohm extension cab for the full 250W. You can always drop the head out and it gives you a 'free' cab.
9. Love it! I've just bookmarked it..... it'll be winging it's way to the other band members very soon!!!
10. I've got a SUB Ray4 with a GFS MM pro pick-up that has 4-conductor wiring. I've drilled the control plate and put an ON-OFF-ON SPDT micro-switch between the vol and the treble. I've wired it up to give 1: split(front coil) 2: Series 3: Series, but with a 4k7 resistor to ground from where the two coil wires meet. This gives three similar sounds but with differing outputs. I prefer position 3. It doesn't sound exactly like a P, but I'm very happy with it. I first tried a series/parallel switching but the difference between the two was too large to be useful. If anyone's interested the wiring is as follows.... Neck coil: Green(+) & Red(-) Bridge coil: White(+) & Black(-) The green wire is soldered to the input for the pre-amp. The red&white are soldered together to the middle lug of the switch. So on the middle (OFF) position those two wires are joined but don't 'go' anywhere, so the p/up is in series. The black wire is soldered to lug #1 and then on to the back of the volume pot. So the black is always grounded. When the switch is up then the red&white are sent to ground to give the split coil sound. A 4k7 resistor is soldered from lug #1 to lug#3. When the switch is down the red&white are sent to ground through the resistor, giving an output somewhere between the other two sounds. You could experiment with different values of the resistor to see how you like the sounds. (I soldered a 25k linear pot across the switch to begin with to find a sound I liked, and then replaced it with an equivalent resistor.)
11. It's so tall you've got to lie it on its side!
12. I've just put together an Fulltone OCD clone kit (here) and I'm impressed with it. It cleans up very nicely using the volume control (or the series/split/resistor 3-way switch I put in) on my SUB Ray4 and adds a very controlled layer of grit, all the way down to Bottom E. For £11.83 (I had a box, sockets, LED etc from a previous pedal) it's well worth it. I'll take it to the rehearsal tomorrow to see what it's like in the band.
13. That'll pay him back for the damage he did to my hearing at Coventry Hippodrome when I was 17!!!! I was right up against the stage in front of Geezer and could feel my chest being hit by the bass notes. My ears rang for a day or two after that. It didn't help that Van Halen were the support band!
14.
I thought the Ultimate Drive and American Sound were pretty poor.
That's a shame 'cos I've just orderded the American Sound!
15. I've just ordered one of these from Thomann (I had some vouchers which were about to run out) so I'll be reviewing it soonish. I've seen great reviews about it's abilities as a bass drive pedal.
16. I think that sounds really good..... but at £129 it should.
17. Sounds like you need more relief in the neck, not less. Slacken the truss-rod a bit, try it, slacken some more etc etc.
18. Thanks for the heads-up..... I didn't know this was on. I shall listen to this later.
19. ....or one of the Fender Rumble combos. (Here)
20.
I've just spotted that they have a circuit for a Wampler Black 65...hmmmmmm. Some of the shorthand instructions are a little hard to follow for the uninitiated, such as myself though, eg. volume3
Volume3 means that lead gets soldered to tag #3 on the Volume pot.
21.
Are you using it with a blend on bass? I found it fantastic for guitar, but I needed that extra bit of low end for bass.
Nope, but I run a Boss GEB-7 eq as the last pedal and I push the 120Hz a touch. I'm tempted by a DIY blend kit.... so I may get one down the line. I'm right in the middle of selling the house at the moment so a lot of 'stuff' is on hold for a while. An estate agent's coming round in ¾hour for a second valuation!
22. ....and you too can do exactly what he's done. Copied the veroboard circuit (from here) and built the kit with £20 of parts.... (I've just got the parts in for a Fulltone OCD replica using their layout diagram.)
