1.
No, no and thrice NO. What a ridiculous situation... I think I would have been on the phone telling the singer he NEEDS to undo this mess asap..!!
He's a she and she already knows she did a bad thing. But she's too soft hearted to burst his bubble. We'll probably need him to dep in the future as well, as our usual drummer is away on tour for six weeks from mid October. The thing is he's a great drummer but doesn't play for the song, he plays for himself. It's like a guitarist who is supposed to be playing rhythm but solos all through the song. It's sad because he has the ability to be a great drummer but will always be 'The drummer of last resort' as far as I'm concerned.
2. I think with P&P included your price is about right. I base this on ebay auctions I've seen over the last few months. I just think people are being a bit tight with their money these days, unless they smell a bargain.
3. I fitted a set of The Dimarzio 123s recently and they are very bass heavy. Almost a precision like sound. That may be a good thing if that's what you want. It wasn't really the sound I was after. So I sold them and bought a set of wizards 64s which were the opposite and gave my Jazz a very authentic, bass light, Jazz growl (very Jaco pastorius) but that wasn't what I was after either so sold them as well. In the end I bought a set of pickups, which were out of a standard mexican fender, for £9.99 off ebay and they are closer to the specific sound that I was looking for. My other Jazz has a set of Japanese Squier pickups which sound great, mainly because I also have a J-retro pre amp installed in it. These pre amps make any pickups sound fantastic and is well worth the investment because it makes any Jazz ' turbo powered'. http://www.east-uk.com/
4. Your bass probably needs some electro magnetic shielding to get rid of the buzz you have. I notice your bass body didn't have any cavity shielding when you got it from Warmoth. I used this paint (link below) and it certainly made a big difference on my Jazz. It's similiar to the stuff Fender coat their cavities with and it will eliminate that irritating, electro magnetic, buzz that stops when you touch the strings. You can also shield the cavities with copper tape or foil (I also bought a sheet of adhesive copper foil, which is also a good way to shield a bass but once I'd used the paint I found the buzz had gone and I didn't need it). 5. Having had a compact (rated at 400watts) and a BC212 (rated at 250watts) the compact can handle a lot more power. My BC212 was very loud with my TC Electronic Classic 450 but started to distort when I put my Ashdown ABM 500 through it (TC amps have clever compressors built in which are gentler on speakers it seems). You would have to keep an eye on your volume levels if you paired them up to ensure you did not damage the BC210.
6. I saw one sold on ebay a few months ago. It went for about £600 which is about average for a secondhand Jazz.
7.
What a vile looking monstrosity.
That's my first impression too. It looks like it was designed for Snoop Doggy Dog. It's the ultimate in tasteless bling. BUT I bet it plays and sounds pretty good, because the guitars Awesome John play on his video sound very tasty and I'm assuming the basses will as well. But for looks.........I give it nil points.
8. Sold my cab to Ian. Money on the nail. Excellent communication. Totally painless transaction.
9. As far a being a bass player is concerned, you're only as good as your drummer. If you have a crap drummer you'll sound pretty crap as well (and so will the band). But if your drummer sounds good, so will you. I'm off to Ireland in a couple of weeks to play some festivals with the crappiest drummer on the planet (our singer took pity on him and asked him along without consulting me). I am not looking forward to it!
10.
I was the proud owner of a Trace SMX rig a long time ago, and I'd spend ages fiddling with the EQ to dial in the perfect sound that I was after and ultimately I got there and I was really happy. However at a gig I was playing at I let a chap from a support band use it and he promptly set it flat and then boosted the bass right up - without even asking or apologising - when I came to play I did my best to try and dial in what i had before but I just couldn't quite get the sound I had / was expecting to have and I was gutted and angry with myself for not sounding my best and also made me think twice about letting people I don't know use my stuff in the future. Shortly afterwards I sold the whole rig and moved onto much simpler rigs (I've currently got a TC RH rig) and I'm loving the fact that it all sounds amazing straight out of the box. Maybe I was being unnecessarily anal and obsessing about things with my Trace and there was barely any difference in the tweakings I was doing or it really did need that my of my work to get the sound I wanted out of it. Who knows! But i'm happy with what I've got now and it's an system that barely has an EQ used on it except for a little nudge / boost / cut here and there depending on the room.
For whatever reason, whenever I have to play through a TE amp, it needs a lot of tweaking to get a usable sound.
11. Just sold some wizards to gaf and an easy and quick deal it was too. Money on the button. Deal with confidence.
12. Very good question. Unfortunately I don't know the answer to that one. But I'm sure somebody will be along soon with the answer.
13. Variax guitars allow you to transpose the tuning I wonder if the bass version allows you to do the same thing? Edit - I looked it up and the answer is no
14. Aha here we go! For all you Jamerson lovers enjoy http://video.pbs.org/video/2256479348 Edit after watching it I couldn't find the clip. Maybe it was in 'Standing in the Shadow of Motown'?
15.
Yep, big JJ fan here but I agree. Shame there's no recordings of him playing jazz. Or is there.....?
I'm sure I heard him playing double bass on a documentary about his fliptop ampeg combo which was on US public TV. I will look into it.....

Even some eighties and nineties Japanese Squires were laminated. Doesn't mean it's a bad bass. If it sounds good...........it is good.
17.
If PayPal is ok I'll take it.
Sorry doomed, it's on hold pending payment.
18. Sigh.......I really hate to have to do this but due to my car needing urgent major repair work, I need cash fast. So it looks as if I'm going to have to bite the bullet and put my newly bought Barefaced Compact up for sale. I don't need to tell you all how great this cab is as I'm sure you've heard great things about them already. It's a brand new compact, which I received in late June (after a 3 month wait). It's been used once and has a roqsolid cover so is in showroom condition. I think £460, which is £80 knocked off the price I paid for it 2 months ago, would be more than a fair price for a compact in new condition. The price includes a Roqsolid cover, which cost me £31 and also includes postage. It's not a bad deal if you're planning on getting a compact anyway and want to save some cash. It also means you'll not have to wait the normal 6-8 weeks for delivery.
19.
If I was to do this do you have any idea which pot I would connect the ground wire to?
I'm assuming the ground wire to the bridge would be connected to the same pot, as shown on the above diagram, provided by MrFingers.
20. It's one of my favourites and it's a close thing but...............my vote goes to Jamerson. I think JPJ would probably agree
21.
You are an utter legend! That would be massively appreciated!
As far as I am aware, the grounding strips on the MIA 62 reissue Jazzes, are merely there for cosmetic reasons and are removeable. They are grounded, as todays Jazz basses are, via the wire that goes from the control cavity to under the bridge. I notice your Warmoth body has been routed for this grounding wire so if you don't wish to go the whole hog, with the brass plates under the pickups soldered to the old style brass grounding strip, you don't need to. Of course you can still get the strip, for the athentic look just like the MIA reissues. The Japanese 62 reissues stick with the older style of grounding. They all have the brass strip and plates in the pickup cavities which are actually connected and ground the bass. I have one and It can be a bit inconvenient if you're trying to fit a larger than stock pickup (as I have found out) as it then protrudes higher above the body than ideal because of the brass plate in the cavity.
22. I've had both types of necks and although the MM neck is very good quality (and the headstock access to the trussrod is very convenient, although not historically accurate) the allparts is better. The only downside of the allparts neck was that it was a bit chunkier than the MM version (and 3 times the price). Alternatively, if you went for a warmoth neck you could specify the exact neck profile you wanted (but of course that's even more expensive).
