1.
I'll banjax your night. Two years ago on a NYE gig my Ibanez E tuner broke as I was checking the tuning just before starting the first tune. Spent the first verse restringing the bass e-a, a-d and d-g, played the gig with no g string. Bit tricky. I suspect someone will lend you a bass for the night on the assumption it stays in the case except in emergency. Or buy a £50 one off e-bay and sell it after the gig.
you're the 00.1%
  2.
I've been playing for 35 years and I've never taken a spare bass to a gig and can't see that changing any time soon I like to live on the edge
+1 Chillaxe dude. Your bass won't melt or explode on stage. I can 99.9% guarantee it.
  3. Secondhand Ashdown EB 150 or 180. Very decent sounding combo with either 15" or 12" speaker. Good sound and loud enough to play with a loud drummer if need be. Quite light too.
  4.
I think you missed the irony in the post you responded to .
I was just checking. Just in case he meant it. What about that bassline in the verse of 'Honky tonk woman', difficult or what?
  5. The problem with the band I mentioned earlier, was that the chords were so wrong that the correct melody couldn't go over the top. You'd be sitting there thinking 'those words sound familiar but I don't recognise the tune?'.
  6.
Indeed, I found the verse so hard, I decided to play cowbell. Which makes everyone look upl when I come in with the chorus.
Well you'll be glad to know there isn't any bass in the verse on the original 'All right Now' (I hope I'm right?).
  7. I depped on bass with some friends who occasionally do a covers set recently and found out that 2 out of every 3 songs they played were totally wrong. I used to wonder why the singer used to sing different melodies from the original version of the song when they played and now I know. I used to think he was 'improvising' in a 'jazz' way but actually what was happening was they were just too lazy to figure out the correct chords for the songs they played and he made the melody up as he went along. Even when I gave them the right chords their attitude was 'well we've played them this way for 10 years, it's too late to change now'. The really are an awful band. If you ever get the chance to see them live............I probably wouldn't bother.
  8.
ok..if it works, then fine.... but you are only asking the speaker to do one thing...and it does it to your criteria. My feeling is that a cab that goes to 3.5khz or so is pretty much unusable but I am glad you have your solution.
I'm the kinda guy who likes the treble turned down on my hi fi.
  9. I think they may be ceramic as they have the magnet at the bottom.
  10.
are they ceramic or alnico? I have what I thought was a squier silver series body and the pups sound amazing. they are ceramic witch disctincive slight rings on the tops of the pole pieces. I can stick some photos up...
I don't know if they're ceramic or alnico? If you mean are the poles bevelled at the top no they're not. I notice your mystery Jazz doesn't have the brass grounding strip running from the bridge to the rear pickup which means it's probably not a silver squier. Are these your pickups? Notice they are bevelled at the top http://www.projectmusic.net/ekmps/shops/projectmusic/images/fender-original-jazz-bass-pickups-4913-p.jpg
  11.
I've recently been offered a Squier Silver Series jazz bass for a reasonable price by a friend. I've known the bass for over 10 years - the current owner bought it off another friend of mine around 5 yrs ago. It's a lovely sunburst with RW board, Jaco style (no scratch plate). It plays and sounds really nice, with an awesome neck. What I'm after is a little bit of 'history' on these Silver series models and their general values. I like it and think it'll be a great backup for my 75RI CIJ Jazz - I've just added Fender USA vintage Jazz pickups, new controls (CTS pots), orange drop cap, new wiring etc and a Gotoh Jazz bridge so it now sounds even more awesome. Also, would it be worth putting the original Japanese pots and pickups from my CIJ into the Squier or do they have decent pickups etc etc. Cheers all.
Read my post http://basschat.co.u...__fromsearch__1 By the way the pickup are awesome and have much more bottom end than a normal Jazz.
  12. Recently I had no alternative but to sell my barefaced compact to help me pay for major car repairs. This of course left me with a bit of a conundrum - I had a working car to get me to the gigs but I didn't have a cabinet to put my bass through when I got there. I had to come up with a plan .....and quick. A quick trawl through basschat and ebay didn't come up with any decent cabs that didn't weigh a ton and I could afford and, frankly, it left me a bit disheartened. But what I did find, on ebay, was a B stock 450 watt 4 ohm eminence kappa 15" going from blue aran for £40. Now I still had my old knackered, UK built, Ashdown EB 150, which had been used and abused and still had the original 200w driver in it. But there was no way I could put my 500 watt MiBass amp through that without destroying the speaker. But £40 for a 450 watt eminence driver was too much of bargain to turn down. So I went ahead and bought it and it arrived next day (excellent service from blue aran by the way). I fitted it to the ashdown combo and I also fitted a speakon socket to the back of the cab. I was a bit worried that the speaker wouldn't complement the cab dimensions and ports etc as it was a lot more powerful (and 100% heavier) than the old speaker. But I took it out to a gig last night and I was flabbergasted at how great it sounded. It was loud and deep and punchy and when I got a friend to play bass on a couple of tunes with the band it sounded even better out front. Result!!!! Now the barefaced compact I had was a great cab but it just goes to show that you don't have to pay silly money to get a great sounding rig. The kappa speaker I bought doesn't do the high frequency thing like the barefaced kappalite did but since I don't slap or pop it's not something I really miss. What I want is loud and deep and punchy and the Kappa does this in spades.
  13.
Not gonna lie: if this was a P bass I'd have to work something out! Alas I can't get away with owning a second jazz of the exact same model!
Japanese Squier precision going on ebay for pennies http://www.ebay.co.u...190741789250%26
  14. I have a Silver Squier Jazz bass which is a P serial number 93/94 that looks just like yours. I've owned a Geddy Lee and a 62 reissue, both MIJ, which have now been sold but I have kept hold of my Silver Squier. The pickups on these basses sound so much deeper and punchier than your normal Jazz and no other jazz bass I've owned or played sounds the same. I've done a bit of research and found that they were only made between 1992 and 1994 and were seen as a superior Squier at a time when most of the production had moved to Korea. What you'll notice is that the neck is somewhere between a precision and a Jazz at the nut which measures 40mm in width, rather than the normal 38mm for a Jazz bass. As far as price is concerned I bought mine for £250 plus P&P just over two years ago and someone would have to offer me a lot more than that to make me want to sell it.
  15. I did a dep gig a few weeks ago with a local band. I didn't get a set list beforehand but when I was handed it before we went on I said I knew about 25 of the 40 odd songs they played and if they stuck to those songs we should be allright. Just as we were about to start the guitarist turned to me and said 'do you know any Neil Diamond?' I said 'nope'. He then turned to the mic and announced 'This is a song by Neil Diamond' counted the drummer in and away we went.......duh! The smart thing to do is, if your depping bass player knows 25 of your songs,.........stick to those bleedin songs. But obviously they thought that was too simple and continued to throw stuff at me I'd never heard of. The guitarist kept on asking me to turn up but what he didn't know is, that when I'm playing a song I'm clueless about, I just turn my volume to zero and jump about with a smile on my face. I feel it's better to pretend I'm just ultra low in the mix than pepper the tunes with bum bass notes. So good luck and remember 'when in doubt...........play nought.
  16. Maybe it's because of the dodgy Strat type scratchplate but I do recall they were a bit of an experiment back in the 80s which didn't catch on and are replaceable with the normal type. If I had the cash I'd buy it! 17. I think you mean at what stage you can call yourself a 'bass player' i.e. someone who can play the bass to a certain level of competence. Personally I think it's a title that can only be bestowed upon you by others - like a knighthood. It can't be bestowed by someone on themselves.

    J+P in one?

I haven't got a clue but I had a listen to you tunes on soundcloud and I really like them. Especially the first one 'don't leave your joy behind' great vocals.
  19.
Do you by any chance work for Lindo?
Oooooh.... such cynicism.
  20.
Ok, I'll have those if I can.
Ok PM'd
  21.
Hi, Are those tuners the wilkinson branded ones with the solid shafts? Cheers
They have Wilkinson written on them. They're the ones on the right hand side of this page http://www.jhs.co.uk/wilkinson.html#tuners
  22.
Dimarzios all the way for me! I put an Ultra Jazz set in my old USA Standard Jazz and they were just incredible. Massive output, but with a very well balanced response and frequency range. Model Js are also good, but maybe a little darker sounding. I had Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders in there before, but I didn't find them that much of an improvement over the stock pups. The other benefit with either of the dimarzios is that they are individually hum-cancelling, so no nasty 60 cycle hum with either pup soloed.
Do you need a battery with those?
  23.
How do these compare to your ears ?
The model DiMarzios were very dark and deep, the Wizards were great and sounded just like my Japanese 62 reissue Fender Jazz (think of that very burpy stereotypical jazz bass sound with a nice top end but not much bass). The Mexican Jazz pickups you'll know all about. I recommend Wizards as the guy who makes them can design them to your specification for not much dosh.
  24. Well, in the last few months I've had a set of DiMarzio model Js, a set of wizard 64s, and a set of mexican standard pickups in my Jazz Bass and have ended up reinstalling the originals (from a japanese 94 squier) back in them because, ironically, they had the sound I was after all along. So good luck with your quest. You may end up back where you started....... like I did.
  25.
Don't know whether this has been done before, but here are the songs I hear most when I go and see a live 'covers' band. Admittedly, they were, and still are great songs, but do WE still want to keep playing them, and perhaps more importantly, do the PUNTERS still want to keep hearing them? It would be interesting to see what songs you guys/gals come up with, and to hear your thoughts on playing the same old songs over and over again. 1. Mustang Sally 2. Brown Sugar 3. All Right Now 4. Born To Be Wild 5. Black Night 6. Sex On Fire 7. Brown Eyed Girl 8. Honky Tonk Woman 9. Maggie May 10. Can't Get Enough
I haven't played a lot of covers over the years but to my eternal shame..............I CAN play and HAVE played ALL of those!
