He sounds like an arse (there's a lot of them about in the music business). I would bear this in mind if you ever decide to deal with him again and make sure you get a written contract. If he can't give you a contract you can't do the gig.

At a local venue I play they replaced their old Ashdown Mag 4x10 with an Ampeg Classic 4x10. What an incredible improvement in the sound, even though the bass amp is still the same (an old Ashdown Mag 600). It's also much louder than the old Ashdown cab as well. The Ampeg classic is a pretty expensive cab at £500 to £600 new but if you can find one used for your budget I really recommend it.

The early nineties MIJ Squier basses have a black truss rod adjuster at the headstock like todays mexican Fenders. This one is natural. I know because I have one.

I've learned to set up my bass myself via youtube vids and trial and error. As long as there's nothing fundamentally wrong with your bass then it's not too difficult. If you have a setup booked then leave it to the professional and he'll confirm the bass is ok and just needs a setup. But next time you feel the bass needs set up to your liking I recommend you try it yourself.

If that's not a good incentive to loose the beef I don't know what is. This is from somebody who was in a similiar situation years ago and lost 4 stone. In the end we didn't get the contract but I did get fit. Since then I've put it all back on again...... but that's another story.

[/quote] It's true about live sound. I used exactly the same amp at a festival last Saturday and the sound out front was awful (for all the bassists that played that day not just for me).

What a sound! In situations like that you have to be assertive and give a cutoff point, after which you can't hold the item any longer (especially if somebody else wishes to buy it). If you make that a personal rule, in future you won't have to consider giving anybody negative feedback about timewasting.

But she's too soft hearted to burst his bubble. We'll probably need him to dep in the future as well, as our usual drummer is away on tour for six weeks from mid October. The thing is he's a great drummer but doesn't play for the song, he plays for himself. It's like a guitarist who is supposed to be playing rhythm but solos all through the song. It's sad because he has the ability to be a great drummer but will always be 'The drummer of last resort' as far as I'm concerned.
