Would you fit a J Retro preamp into a vintage jazz bass?
Rich replied to Gunsfreddy2003's topic in Accessories and Misc
My 1974 jazz bass has a lovely sound and tone but compared to my GB Rumour it feels a little lacking in the EQ dept!!
I would say this is a good thing. Unless you want to use the Jazz as a backup or 2nd bass to use at gigs, I think it's a great idea to have two different sounding basses. It's like having an Armani suit, plus a nice shirt & pair of chinos... you've got something to suit every occasion. I agree with the consensus -- if you want a sizzly hi-fi Jazz then buy one, but leave the 74 as is. -
That's cool. Don't listen to it then.
Would someone mind bagging me a copy please?
No probs mate I bought the last one (not abysmal IMHO, but rather underwhelming), even though it meant buying the Mail... I made a point of taking th CD out of the packaging before i left the shop and dumping the paper in the bin outside the door. I'll probably do the same with the new one.

Not my cuppa tea at all, but the colour is fabulous. Hope you have lots of fun with it

Is a bass more aesthetically pleasing than a guitar?
Rich replied to Marvin's topic in General Discussion
I must also add, by 'Bass' i mean a four stringed instrument, not a six or even a five(barely passable) . Less is more, and more is four. Any more just looks wrong, sort of, you know, guitarish .
-
I don't get the EUB. It doesn't really sound like either, it has a sound of its own. When I think of the type of sound Tony Levin gets, it sounds a bit like a bit like a slow fart for want of a better term.
All I can say is that you obviously haven't heard Dave's remarkable Eminince EUB. I heard it at the South Wales BB a few months back and was stunned... it really does sound uncannily like an acoustic DB and would be my absolute 1st choice if I was to dip a toe into the EUB waters.

Bassplayers in hats.. A sale at our faourite hat store
Bah! - got to be the real thing. Cheapies don't compare as they have the same old plastic lenses instead of B&L glass in them. My current pair is still as good as new & have lasted ten years so far. I know how old they are as I bought them from the sunglass hut in the World Trade Centre when I was sent on an all-expenses paid fools-errand to New York in 2000.
Well sure, I'd love the real thing. But I can't afford the real thing Added to which, there's no way I'd take a pair of real Raybans anywhere near a Destroyers stage -

Bassforte? Yes, and bass for breakfast and bass for dinner too. Sorry.
dr1, love the video, really grooveworthy, but I think faithless is being quite fair. He didn't try to give advice, just pointed out what the thread was about. I read faithless' post as just voicing a friendly concern so as to try and avoid this thread ending up as another heated debate between members who like discussing avantgarde playing/players, and members who think bass is all about the groove (which I wholeheartedly agree with!).
I agree entirely. There was no need to jump down Faithless' throat, his comment was perfectly reasonable. mcgraham is right, the last thing we need is yet another "it's just fretw*nking / no it's not / yes it is" thread, we have dozens of them already. Some of us like contemporary jazz, nu-jazz, fusion and so on, and it'd be nice to be able to discuss it occasionally without constantly being told that we like sh*t music. Is this really too much to ask?

Excellent. I did keep a sort of CV with one band but nothing remotely that detailed. Although I have kept a set list from nearly all my Destroyers gigs
-
I'd have been tempted to use a left-handed neck for the lower one, so the tuners didn't get too close to the headstock of the upper neck. Still, this is a fascinating (and very different) project and I'll be interested to see how it turns out.
Wayne, any chance to explain, what the heck does this mean?
It's been a whole page since Wayne last reminded us that he doesn't like this sort of stuff, and I think he's worried that we've forgotten.
headline band turned up an hour and a half late for the sound check
Did they have an excuse, or could they just not be arsed to turn up on time?

My old fretless Jaydee Roadie had/has an unfinished ebony board... in the 20-ish years I owned it, I never did anything to it other than polish it occasionally. Absolutely no cracking and very little marking even, despite the fact that I always used roundwounds. It's brilliant stuff.

Having said that I was definitely up for this, it turns out that I can't make it. I've had to rearrange a couple of my weekends with the kids, and as a result 10th/11th is now one of them. I'm really sorry about this, I was looking forward to coming along and bringing the Shuker/Wal/Genz/Nemesis lurrve Hope you guys have a great time, and a million thanks to you John for all your organisational work. Gutted.
LSD soon turns you in to a twat IME ;-)
Don't worry Dave, if Si started disappearing up his own butt, his missus would soon bring him back down to earth she's great I do a lot of BVs with my other band and it's great, I really enjoy it. The one thing I still cannot do though is talk and play... we do the band intros during one of the songs, and when I introduce the singer I have to stop playing and it sounds a bit daft.

CK, if memory serves me correctly you had a Groove 5 at one time..?

Cracking stuff! I particularly like the way the keys player just wouldn't shut up I'm going to have to track down some of these guys' work.
Watch Joan Hickson as Miss Marple.
Eek. No thanks, I'd rather listen to a Manowar CD

I have a wood Series 1, one of the supposed 'thru neck' ones (it's actually a glued set neck).
