1.
Back to Level 42- no slap but this has to be one of the most haunting tunes for anyone who had their heart broken in the late 80s- sorry to open those old wounds again
For me, it was this one. Old wounds notwithstanding, this is in my top 5 favourite songs of all time and way up there on the Songs I Wish I'd Written list.
2. Reply to them saying "Sure, no problem, the promoters' website is www.hahahaf**koffyoulosers.com"...
3. Oh for god's sake, will somebody please buy it and stop me lusting after this bass that I can't afford and don't need but really really want...
4. It's nearly 40 miles away, but it's only just down the road from the office so I go straight from work.
5.
Wal 5 string
Oh yes, good call. Santa, please keep the DJ5 and bring me a Wal 5 instead...
6. Lakky DJ5, candy apple red with pearly white plate, rosewood board with blocks, matching CAR headstock. And red side LEDs
7.
It's really quite difficult to get those sounds out of a bass - because it wasn't designed to do that job.
The bass guitar was originally designed to do two jobs -- 1) to deliver accurately intonated notes, and 2) be louder & smaller than a double bass. That's it. No picks, no slaps, no glassy top end, no tonal variation, nothing. How many of us here can say that we have never, ever asked more of it than its original brief?
8.
Neither of these do much for me. That's not just because I can't do it myself - there's plenty out there that I can't do (lets face it - practically all of it) that does do something for me. This simply does not.
Fair enough. At least you didn't write it off on the basis of it looking weird.
With all that fiddling with the D-tuner wouldn't he be better off with a five string?
Watch him carefully -- that's four detuners on the headstock and at least two at the bridge. Good luck in finding a 5-string (or in fact an anything-string) capable of all the different tuning combinations possible with that lot (I can't be arsed to do the maths) For anyone not put off by his tunings or his trousers, there's a good interview here.
9. Gig dragged to -- Michael Bolton, supported by Kenny G Silver lining -- Vail Johnson on bass spectacular playing, and what a sound
10. If I only liked or listened to stuff that really relates to what I do, my playlists would be extremely short.
11. Was GASing for a G-B Shuttle back in August. Got one now
12. I have 2 amp heads -- Genz-Benz Shuttle 6 and Hartke 3500 -- while cab-wise I have the two Nemesis 1x15s plus an old SWR Bass Monitor 1x12. For rehearsals, I generally take one of the 15s plus the Hartke (I have a complete set of all the necessary leads etc stowed in the back of the Hartke's case, so it's an easy one-trip-from-the-car setup), with the bigger amp and both the 15s going out to gigs. The wedge comes in handy sometimes, but it's kinda heavy. I might fit a neo speaker at some point.
13. Dennis Rollins... the first Bad Bone album in particular is a diamond.
14. When i saw the Manics a couple of years back, they were the same -- at least one & often two uncredited & unacknowledged mystery guys at the back, filling the sound out. I spent most of the gig marvelling at the sheer awfulness of Nicky Wire's sound.
15. If you have a problem with a PM, can you raise it with a mod rather than broadcast it? Ta.
16. The Pursuit Of Accidents album is probably my favourite L42 one, and IMHO has King's best recorded bass sound... to my ears, it sounds like they put his live touring rig in a room with a couple of mics.
17. You're not keen on the non-defeatable nature of the G-B Shuttle 6's valve preamp? why is that, just out of interest? I am overjoyed with the sound of mine, it's simply brilliant.
I'm going to see if I can get an AI Focus/Clarus and an EA iAmp Micro 550 in the same room as my Acme B2. I hope I don't have to buy both of them!
Honestly, I would recommend including a Shuttle in that shoot-out. And if you do manage to get them all together, make sure you give us a full report!
18.
They need to get away from doing long drawn out Q+As with players people have never heard of/care about
To be honest, I'd far rather read i/views with lesser known players than yet another bloody article on *insert name of v.famous bassist here*. Dave Swift is a case in point -- most people have probably never heard of him, but his interview in BGM is one of the best they've ever had. Just my 2p.
19.
Just tell them and give them notice, say a month, and offer to help them get a new person up to speed. If you have gigs booked you should honor them but then just move on. They will find their way without you...
Aye, what he just said.

21. I've got your '...Kirby Dots' album on my mp3 player, it's definitely left field but excellent stuff. Every time I listen, I hear something new. It's strangely disturbing in places too!
22.
Also, third party reports of these disputes have a habit of getting round. Whether or not the guy's a w***er, shouting at him doesn't help your band's rep. However stupid the organiser, it's their house and their rules. Unless they stiff you for payment, at which point all bets are off.
+1. Stuff like that can get your band a bad reputation that will follow you around for ages.
23. I come from the age of vinyl, like the author of that article -- when you went into town on Saturday afternoon with your few quid and scoured the record shops, coming home with 2,3, maybe 4 carefully selected albums. You put on an album, you listened to the whole thing, all the way through, carefully. Listened again. And again, if it really grabbed you. And again, if it was an instant classic. Back then I think I probably knew every lyric to every song on every album I owned, because music was very definitely finite and so we listened more carefully. Perhaps we even treasured it more?
24. Oh god, that is gorgeous. Will you take a kidney in PX?
