It depends on the bass, the luthier etc. I've seen quotes range from £80 to £125 for a professional defret. Remember, you are effectively getting a significant set-up within the price. This could involve filing the nut, shimmying, fretboard treatment etc. I think your Hudson is crying out for a defret, and you'll not regret it. But put flats on when you do!
According to the blurb on the Cranes site, the fingerboard is 'compressed' ebony. I reckon you'd probably be ok with roundwounds (or maybe half- or pressure-wounds to be on the safe side). I only ever used roundwounds on my fretless Jaydee, and it hardly marked at all over the 20+ years I had it! De-fret it baby, you know it makes sense!
  2. Bassist got absorbed by its big brother Guitarist mag. It soldiered on as a token section of that mag for a while, and Roger Newell even carried the title 'Bass Editor' for a while -- it must have been the easiest job in the world, as the average bass content was around 5 pages of Squier reviews. This slowly became 4 and then 3 pages, and then disappeared completely.
  3.
Actually this guy just gets better.... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/yamaha-bex4-semi-ele...emZ200386946650 "This bass is a star in its own right, it has been on 4 UK tours and has been on the stage where the likes of The Beatles and Nirvana have once stood. ". Pure Gold
£450 BIN on a well-used bass that's £500 brand new, what a cracker. I like the bit that says: "Due to this being a special bass we only want serious buyers, so we have decided to have collection only, that way we know that whatever home it goes to, the person is obviously very passionate about music to have travelled to pick it up and we hope it gets to continue touring." Roughly translates as: "We can't be arsed to arrange a courier."
  4. I'm also a Rich W though, so it could still get confusing!
Cheers .. If you bring your Grandma, er, GRAMMA then I don't have to bring mine
If I can make it, I'll bring my home-made platform along too. Perhaps we could A/B test 'em?
  5.
That would be easy to get rid of. You just need a guitarist to weigh it down.
Fixed again.
  6.
There's a lot of it about.... here's one I noticed yesterday: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Yamaha-electric-bass...Z200386945757QQ How much are/were TRB1005s new?
GAK have them for £519. But apparently this bass "has supported major artists such as 90's rock band Thunder, pop singer Lucie Silvas and x factor duo journey south". So that makes it worth loads more.
  7.
Well folks, not long to Christmas (!) and our party run means playing gigs on a boomy, wooden floor for 7 or 8 gigs this December. Rather than shell out £70+ on a Gramma pad big enough for a 4x10 I wondered if I should try to make my own. I reckon I could do it for at least half that price. Here's my shopping list... - Auralex Platfoam - one strip - £11'ish - MDF board, or chipboard - £3'ish - Carpet covering - £3'ish - EVO Stick £3'ish - 2 x 1ft acoustic wedges - £10'ish A little bit of time & effort and hey presto! I think I'd have some sort of Gramma Pad style thingy .... So, before I begin can anyone think of why this won't work ? Happy to make a build diary to see how it all goes, although not promising miracles.
I built something just like this a few years back. It works a treat and is well worth the effort. As regards the board -- don't use MDF or chip, they weigh a ton. Get some good marine ply, it's half the weight of MDF and is completely stiff. For a carpet covering, I recommend carpet tiles. I was going to make another platform but never got round to it -- bloody lazy, that's my problem. But I still have the Platfoam that I bought for it, and some leftover ply that's about the right size, and some more carpet tiles that I [s]pinched[/s] borrowed from work. Anybody want one made? EDIT: and Monz is right, the Auralex foam is miles harder than 'any old' foam. Don't try using strips of ordinary stuff, the cab will squash them flat and be very unsteady.
  8. Islington at 9.30pm on a Wednesday. For me, it might as well be on Venus. Dammit.
  9.
Nope. Double bass > electric bass. The family resemblance is only that. Only the playing position is guitar-like. Even frets were on upright basses once, y'know... Look at the old Jazz headstock, it specifically says "electric bass"; look at a Fender VI, and it specifically states "electric bass guitar". The Musicman Silhouette is similarly titled. The VI is also erroneously called a baritone guitar - they're tuned to A or B, not EADGBE and are usually 27.5" scale or similar. Not to say you can't mess with different strings, of course... At the time, remember, if you played bass, it was either an upright or a tuba... A bass that can easily be played by a guitarist, yes. A bass guitar, no. However, I realise that this particular bit of pedantry is considered old-fashioned. So be it. I am too!
If you told an orchestral player that you played "electric bass", his answer would be exactly the same as that suggested by bassassin... "Bass what?". Bass is the pitch, not the instrument. It'd be like a soprano sax player arguing that his horn's proper full name is just 'soprano'. Exhibit A... if it was a good enough name for Leo, it's good enough for us...
  10.
So only expensive basses have good necks now?!
Of course not. Where did anyone say that, exactly? Or even suggest it?
  11. I play 5s pretty much exclusively now. My 4s don't get a look in, except for noodling around at home. Even my 6 sees more action than the 4s. But for me, the 'standard' bass guitar will always have 4 strings tuned E-G.
  12. Orright me babs? We definitely need to arrange some sort of Bristle get-together. Even if it's just for a couple of beers.
Hey, no worries. The general charm of your intro more than compensates for a tiny vernacular solecism. And the world's a funny place. FWIW, in Hungary, you begin and end phone conversations with "Hallo". So: "Lovely talking to you, must be going now. Hallo." Confused me a few times.
"Hello, I must be going..!" Perhaps the Hungarians are big Marx brothers fans? Arrivederci and welcome, oh Thumpy One glad you could join us. Looking forward to your contributions, sounds like you have a lot of good stuff to add.
  14. I bought a custom bass because I wanted to. If I didn't want to, I wouldn't have. Simples.
I can get a nice tone on something that's cheaper
I don't doubt that for a second.
just as comfortable
Or that.
and probably nicer to play.
But how do you work that out?
  15.
LMFAO! Someone please put that in the quotes thread
Done
  16. I have two of these puppies, they are bloody marvellous. So light! Highly recommended. Have a free bump.
  17.
Chapter 7: B These are buzzy things closely related to wasps and ants, and are known for their role in pollination and for producing honey and beeswax. There are nearly 20,000 known species. They are found on every continent except Antarctica, in every habitat on the planet that contains flowering plants. I like honey, it's very nice on toast and also makes a very comforting drink when mixed with lemon juice and diluted with hot water. Just right for those annoying winter sniffles. EDIT: I have just been told that 'B' is also a note. I wanted to verify this so I called Darryl Jones, my (I think) inferior replacement in the Stones. He helped me out tremendously -- apparently, the proper description of the B is "look, whoever you are, if you don't stop hassling the band we'll take out an injunction". So there you are.
18. With Full Circle, I get to play on original prog material that's complicated and unashamedly self-indulgent... odd time signatures, 20 minute songs etc. This caters for the muso in me and fills the gap left by my dear departed fusion band. They are nice friendly guys and it's a lovely atmosphere to work in. With the Destroyers, I get to have a few laughs and a lot of fun. There is no better safety valve after a long stressy working week than to stick on a silly shirt, get up on stage and make an eejit of yourself for 2 hours in front of a big crowd. It's all covers and some are better than others. I have to play Mustang Sally, but then again I get to play I Wish and Car Wash and I Want You Back, so it more than evens out. Some people would think this to be hell on earth, but I love it. The band is like a big family, with all the various WAGs and BAHs involved too.
  19.
I can play alone or just with my band in rehearsal but when I play a show I want a jumpin' audience and all the niceness that brings. That requires a degree of compromise over tunes choices and I'm prepared to do that.
I agree entirely. I hate playing Love Shack and Mustang buh-leeding Sally, but the punters absolutely love them, so I'll do it -- there's enough stuff I like in the set to compensate. This thread is starting to morph into a cross between 2 old favourites... the age old anti/pro-covers band saga, and the "everything I like is great and everything else is sh!t" chestnut...

I know exactly why this happens. It is because... Oh look, there's a squirrel. Errm... ...what was I saying?
  21.
Drummer's been threatening to contribute some lyrics for years now, and they've yet to materialise. On balance this is probably a good thing.
Especially when you consider some of the complete arse Neil Peart has written in the past He has come up with some gems too, mind.
  22.
thanks for all the comments tho guys/gals. your probably right in not selling it all. I did enjoy having band practice with my mates band last week before the bassist turned up so maybe i dont hate it, I just dont like playing with the 5-6 other people I jam with occasionally. Gonna pack it all up for now and have a little break from it. Im off to do a snowboard season in the French Alps in november till april so might pick it back up then.
Sounds like a plan. A break is often a good thing when you're in the doldrums. And when you do pick it up again, for god's sake find some new people to play with. And definitely do not sell your kit. Except the Shuker, to me, for 80 quid.
  23. +1 for either groove or pocket.
Call 'em what you want. Nobody would take any notice. They'd all be watching the 'ego' of guitarists.
Or they'd be listening to the 'ponce' of vocalists.
