1. Which phenomenon? Mr. Caron? Fusion? Youtube?
2.
I now have new colour scheme for a build.... CAR with white pearl/cream, RW block and bound.
With matching headstock, it's my favourite colour scheme for a Jazz. One day I'll get Mr. Shuke to build me a 5-string one
3. White pearl. I know you don't go for white much, but pearl is a different kettle of fish.

Bitsa P

Mind if I hijack for just a moment? I've finished my bitsaP too so I thought I'd share. It's an unknown body (nice chunky bit of solid wood), the gorgeous neck off my old Squier Jazz, big chunky bridge, cream pearly plate, cheapass pickup and an EMG BTS 2-band eq. It's worked out really well, better than I could have hoped -- I've shimmed the neck slightly and its got a lovely low action as a result. There's a more powerful Wilkinson pickup on its way to me in the post. At some point it'll get a J pickup at the bridge. All I need now is an old-skool funk gig (I've fitted all the plate screws since I took the pics)
5. I love this guy's playing. I saw him with Mike Stern's quartet a few years back; his was some of the finest fretless playing I have ever seen or heard. Tasteful, accurate, and with a fabulous sense of melody. One of his solos was so melodic in fact that the tune of it actually got stuck in my head for a couple of days. How often does that happen with a bass solo? Ah well, I'm sure somebody will be along in a bit to tell us what a pile of toss slap is.
6. If anyone else is hoping to win the Basschat 'Most Valuable Player' award, don't bother. Pete's got it sewn up for ever Sir, you are a diamond.
7. Is it in the standard factory finish, or an exotic top? Can't stand those coffee table Mars bars.
8. Squier Jazz body, black, plywood unfortunately. WYSIWYG. It has buttons, w/b/w pickguard and control plate, and a pair of active pickups of unknown origin. The body is fairly scruffy, a few scrapes here and there, one particularly deep on on the back. And as you can see, it's been drilled out for a body-edge jack socket (a standard rugby-ball plate fits). Oh, and it also comes complete with two stickers courtesy of my son Free to a good home for the cost of postage (about 8 quid, according to the RM website) or you can come and pick it up. Please note that I am a lazy bugger and can't be bothered to take it apart, so it goes complete. 9. Bill -- for the total thickies among us (i.e. me), could you explain the difference between 1st order high-pass and 3rd order?
10. That is phwoarr with a capital fuh. Stunning..!
11. Errm, thirteen Three vocals, guitar, keys, bass, drums, two trumpets, alto tenor & bari saxes, and trombone. Needless to say, the gig money doesn't pay the mortgage. None of us does it for the loot though, it's a great laugh with a bunch of mates.
12. For anyone dipping a toe in the [s]acid[/s] water, i can recommend the 'Best Of Acid Jazz' vol.1 and 2 double CD sets. Available from Amazon for £buggerall and a great way to hear new sounds.
13. No, we know this isn't true -- deforestation doesn't happen, because Hartley Peavey said he couldn't see any smoke from his Gulfstream. And therefore anyone who worries about it is just a "tree hugger". Hartley said so.
14. My three favourites are Rio, New Religion, and Last Chance On The Stairway.
15. Back in mid 1986, I had a load of stuff stolen from outside our rehearsal studio -- basically everything except my bass and amp. I still live in hope that the brand new MXR Phase 100 exploded into razor-sharp shards of red hot metal the first time the thief tried to use it. Anyway, I digress... I bought a load of replacement bits and pieces, among which were a pair of 15ft Klotz cables. I've used them for pretty much every gig and rehearsal since.
16. Luthiers? Oh we're spoiled for choice in the UK... Shuker, Sei, Overwater, RIM, ACG, Manson are the first ones that spring to mind. Then there are other smaller makers like Tom Waghorn. Whereabouts in the UK are you?
17. Celinder is another option. Although yes, if it was my money I'd be looking for something custom built to a vast specification. For 3k, the world is your lobster. I'm really quite jealous actually EDIT: OK, very jealous
18. Surely all our kit, not just the quote boutique gear unquote, is just hobbyist stuff until we start earning an actual living with it?
19. Dave_bass talking to davebass... this could get confusing, like the Python Bruces I tend to agree however, the first tech definitely deserves some recompense for his shielding work at least.
20. To be honest, i don't really care if anyone notices my gear (although thanks to the Shuker's gorgeous coffeetableness and beautiful tone, they often do). I know it's there, and that's all that matters.
21.
Hello all... Just wondered what peoples thoughts might be on the thought of fretting a GWB35? I'm a fan of them, their feel and tone, and really like the sound of the GWB2, the fretted version but they're raaaaaaaaaarrrrrreeeee! You'd be looking at about £100 I guess minimum to have the work done, so, potentially having invested £400-450 into the instrument. What say you folks? Jam
Answered your own question there, I reckon Go for it. But yes, keep a fretless one too.
22. Not so keen on medleys, but segues are brilliant. We do them a lot. Our current ones include Hard To Handle > Crazy In Love > I Wish and I Want You Back > ABC and Reach Out (I'll Be There) > Lady Marmalade > Ain't Too Proud > Night Boat To Cairo (sounds absurd I know, but it works). The biggest one we ever did was Black Eyed Boy > Two Tribes > War > 25 Miles > Papa Was A Rolling Stone > Move On Up complete with audience karaoke in Papa Was. Tipped the scales at nearly 20 minutes..!

24. +1 from me for Gary Willis, John Giblin, Manring (utter genius) and, yes, Alain Caron. I saw him with Mike Stern a couple of years back and he was astonishing.
25.
Amen to that. In February of this year I saw a music shop worker 'demoing' an entry level bass to a complete newbie. She was in with her parents and they were obviously a bit intimidated (by the biggest guitar wall in Europe) and all this guy wanted to do was show off how fast he could [s]masturbate[/s] play. Didn't even show her what the controls did or what to do with the amp. I did that after he'd gone for a cigarette and a lie down. Tool.
Back when I still bothered trying out basses in music shops, whenever this happened and the shop worker gave me his best Wooten/Kinger/Sheehan impression before giving me the bass, I'd play 4 notes and say "nah, don't like it" and hand it back to him.
