This is an interesting and useful source of info. Effects Current Draw Database It's dead easy to measure it yourself too. EDIT: Boss are conspicuous by their absence from that list, but their figures can be found here.
I think we need 3 lists. . . . Need To Know, Nice To Know and You're Kidding, Right?
Is Keef right, Sgt Peppers is a load of tosh?
Now that led to Roger Moore in a Volvo (The Saint), a far more acceptable combination.
Nonsense. Lord Brett Sinclair in that mustard yellow Aston DBS, now THAT's more like it. -
No. This I do not agree with. I first stood on stage with a bass when I was 15 because I was influenced by Sweet, Slade, T Rex, The Clash, The Sex Pistols and the increased opportunity to get females. The aforementioned may have well been influenced by The Beatles, but I don't accept my guilt by association. It a bit like saying because I drive a car I must be influenced by the Model T, when day one for me and cars was Roger Moore in a Lotus.
This. Horace Panter, Bedders and Dave Steele (and subsequently Mark King, a bit of a sideways jump I know ) were the first guys to really inspire me to pick up a bass, so I guess if you follow that line back you could say that my ultimate influences are the original Jamaican ska bassists from the 60s, and later reggae (I'm sure Family Man will have been in there somewhere too). Not a Beatle in sight there if you ask me. -
Nice the tort plate looks 100000 times better than the original one.

I suppose any of the artists at the vanguard of a popular genre can be said to be particularly influential, e.g. the hip hop pioneers (Afrika Bambaataa etc) -
Love Games, Level 42. E (min I think) Yes, it's a slap riff. Deal with it.

I'd put Pet Sounds well up on any list of influential albums.
Except for The Doors maybe, I cant see anything good there tbh.
Thank god it's not just me feels like that cringeworthy sixth-form lyrics and thoroughly unremarkable music. Everything I've ever heard of The Doors has been utterly meh. But then again, I was only 6 when they released Riders On The Storm which means I wasn't really there, so my opinion counts for now't. -
Second Hand Bass with considerable damage on arrival - what you would do?
IMO you should always go back to the vendor and give them a chance to put things right before going public.
Agreed, and to this end I have removed the vendor name from the OP's posts in an attempt to make it a little less 'name & shame'. Please keep it anonymous for the time being, especially as you say you are not intending to criticise. -
Small bodies, single cuts, the top horn on a Corvette that looks like a nob, bog-seat Bongos, rosewood boards, shiny varnished necks, any of the forty seven million Jazz copies out there (no matter how much they cost), real Jazzes, Rickenbackers, anything other than 4s...
You've encompassed pretty much everything I own with that list
Music that you like is a beautiful thing. I still don't see what makes it being played live any more special.
Hard to describe, but for me it makes it somehow more alive. Listening to great recorded music is a wonderful thing, but seeing and hearing it being performed, there right in front of you, makes it more... personal? I'm making a dreadful job of this explanation

Blues Rock Bass Player 'wanted' ad - unbelievable!
I also have a strong dislike of guitarists who play blues rock.
Do you mean a dislike for the guitarists as people, or for their chosen field/techniques? -
It's hilarious... Past few years I've went back and forth from multi fx to separates, I just can't make my mind up!
I dare say an awful lot of us have done that I know I have. For the moment, I'm happy enough with what my Line 6 Pod XT Live gives me -- the FX I want are perfectly useable and the few amp models I use are convincing enough to keep me happy, and the sheer convenience of having everything in one easily transportable box makes it a definite keeper for the foreseeable future.
This is why the band runs a ktty, but agree the singer might get a decent deal as the band has paid for what might be perceived as his end. They say the band can use it...but funnily the bass doesn't get to go thru it.
In a band I was in many many years back, the singer owned the PA. It wasn't terribly big, but was man enough for vox, keys, kick drum, etc. We all used to pitch in with setting up, crashing it, etc. After a while the singer announced that he was going to be taking an extra cut from gig income because as he saw it he was effectively hiring his PA to the band. He dropped the idea after bitter complaints from the rest of us and threats to leave from at least two. A few weeks later he said that his wife had been asked if we would play at the leisure centre she worked at... and that consequently he would be taking a "finder's fee" from the income as it was his wife who had got us the gig. Why yes, the band did go tits up shortly after that, however did you guess?
Well the 'fact' is bass can be and is played as a solo instrument. The 'opinion' is that it shouldn't be.
Yes I know, that's kind of what I was getting at.
if anyone genuinely loves music, the only defensible position is 'I like good solos and don't like bad ones but it is entirely down to me to decide which is which'.
I don't think it's the only defensible position -- to my mind, another one is 'I don't particularly like solos of any sort, but hey, each to his own'. Other than that, brilliant post. As ever, the trouble begins when opinion starts to be presented as fact...
NO! I loathe bass solos with a passion and hate having to do them at the drop of a hat when the singer suddenly decides it's a good idea. Bass is not and never should be a solo instrument.
Ahem.
It is obvious to me that there will never be any sort of agreement in the "basses are not suitable instruments for solos / yes they are / no they aren't / yes they are / etc" argument, so can we steer clear of the whole suitability chestnut? Otherwise I can see it getting personal and/or ending in tears. I think there's plenty of room for debate on this subject without that specific facet.
Warning: fusion content. Those with an allergy to such things may like to look away now. If I could solo like this (1:40 to 3:00), I'd be the happiest bunny in all of toyland.

The only vintage instrument i'm really keen on getting is a good '65 Jazz. This is because a} I like Jazzes, b} it'd be my YOB bass, and c} it'd be a good investment. I doubt very much that it'd get many, if any, gigs.
I want to hear good music. If a bass solo sounds good then by all means! I don't care at all what instruments are used to make nice sounds. I care about the nice sounds.
I used something like this when I was using stomps. 1.33A at 9v is enough to drive 170 Tubescreamers.
