1. ive got the basic structure idea down, it's nowhere near my original idea... but hey ho
2. i've been a lead singer/bassist for the past 5 years. it has its cons, you have to decide which element takes priority (unless you are geddy lee). for me now, my bass is secondary as i have to be the focus, the voice and the front of the band, so my singing has to be on point so has to take priority over a flashy walking line.
3.
Go for it Rob!
ive got a lyrical theme for it, depends if i can make the music to match
4. im going to try and get my arse in gear to do this months one
5.
Yep, +1 to that
he can be a bit "goddy" at times, but he speaks on a level that is easy to understand, excellent resource his channel
6.
I see nothing to indicate that anything other than an ageist remark has been made. It's what I'd call a low-level insult. Normally, I would let it go but I've seen Blue given a hard time by some of the members here in the past. Blue?
i don't think its a targeted ageist remark, its a light hearted joke..... i don't think blue gets a hard time either, he is a respected member of this community. he does have very strong opinions that can polarise the community and he gets some strong defensive responses, but he has always given as good as he gets and enters into the discussions willingly. i very much doubt he would have seen it as an insult, he's a bigger man than that.
7. "if that means playing for five people that havent heard us" that kind of line comes from a band who have been going a year, not a band having being going 10 years or more as you suggest. sounds to me like you are the only with sensible head on. if they have been doing this for 10 years and the dynamic is fixed, and the dynamic is fixed then they are not going to change. even with a manager it will come full circle when the guitarist decides that the manager doesn't know what they are on about after playing gigs miles away that no one comes to and it will return to the same old sh*t. it sounds like you have reached your limit of said sh*t, the question is, are you willing to spend another year in the band for it to come back round again?
8.
It's worth watching this, if only for his point at the beginning that even the budget interfaces can produce really good results (better than the studio equipment he used 10-15 years ago). He also has some good advice about the number of inputs on your interface. If you think you need 4 inputs rather than 2 in the future, then it's probably worth getting one with 4 now for example.
on a side note, Graham Cochrane (the guy in the video) is an excellent source for knowledge on youtube when it comes to mixing and recording, i can't recommend him highly enough. his mate Joe Gilder is also very good.
9. unless you are a tribute act, the best bass is the one that sounds and plays best, regardless of how it looks. i would always play the bass that i want to play, if the band want me to play another (unless they are paying me), then it's the wrong band for me
10. i have always believed it is important to practice to create a tight working unit, however the frequency at which you do it depends on the band and it's commitments. i had one band and we would go through periods where would practice twice a week, writing and perfecting our perfomances and when we would have a run of regular gigs we didn't need to practice, so we would cut down to 1 a month if you have been brought into a band and expected to learn a full set, i'd expect some practices, firstly to ensure you are playing what they are playing, secondly to see if you gel.
11.
I just like noisy bands and think they are a laugh. Coming home from work with nothing to do except TV is crushing!
i know that feeling mate, the way my wife and i are scheduled at work that is pretty much every evening for me during the week. round here, people who are my age with the same levels of experience are either in solid bands, or have lost the desire to do it anymore. i haven't played a gig since august 2014 as a result, and having tried things with a new crowd nothing has stuck either because the music isn't what i want or the other members are not as reliable or experienced as they need to be in order to get anything meaningful going. my friend and i have put our old band back together and are recording stuff in my house, but we are trying to find a drummer, and the response we have had is lukewarm, and those we have tried have been totally not what we are looking for or not reliable. it's harder the older you get, so i envy those who are in bands that are stable. music is addictive, and when you are unable to fulfil that buzz in any meaningful way its soul destroying.
12. also, what headphones are you using? if you are using something with a bass boost for example, that may distort the results on other mediums
13. i'm having drummer issues... we had one, he seems to have disappeared off the face of the planet... since we have had no contact from him for the past few weeks we are looking for a replacement.... not much fun at all.. its amazing how people don't actually seem to read adverts properly before messaging you.
14. i think a sub forum about actual gigging practically would be useful. we talk about getting gigs often, but need a coherent way of communicating good venues/promoters and those to avoid. normally these just get lost in the "general discussion" or "off topic". could you not have a forum split into sub sections "ie london, east anglia, midlands etc" and people can post their venue recommendations with contacts etc (not as a gig advertising space of course). its easy enough to use the search bar to type in a venue name to see if people have posted about it before. yes it would need moderating, but i think it could be a really good resource, rather than the current "we're gigging come see us" in the gig sub.
15.
If you want a 'savage' review (from the professionals!) try posting your mix on the Sound On Sound Forums. Been there, done that and won't be doing that again! Nothing evil or deliberately savage, but it was a very chastening experience for me, although I did get some good tips. I did also have an extended private discussion with a pro mixer and I know where I'll be going for some one-to-one mix tutorials in the future if I ever end up recording a band again.
i spent some time on the sound on sound forums.... they are an odd bunch over there
16. any poll would have to allow multiple choices, maybe 3 each, because i personally wouldn't say my tastes stick to one genre
17. I have used all of mine for various things, but go to is my Japanese aerodyne jazz because the p and j pick ups give me a great range of tones. Really it's getting the right bass for the right tone for me
18.
You can't have discrimination in the arts. It's one of the few places it doesn't apply.
try telling that to social justice warriors
19. i think non-binary means any gender or sexual orientation/identity that isn't a heterosexual male, so you could (if you if you are all about social justice and that) say this advert is sexist. try it, then call them bra burning feminists... the back and forth would be highly amusing, if nothing else you could do a sad face article for the daily mail and get a couple of hundred quid. "musican gets denied spot in a band for being A MAN"
20.
A few more thoughts. To open/spice it up a little more while still keep things relatively simple for everyone. Make it more of a challenge/comp like the composition thread, by having a picture for inspiration. Also the winner of that month chooses next months inspiration pic. The pic can be anything at all. Increase the allotted time up to 100 seconds which is still short but maybe not as constrained as 60 seconds. If people want to use less time then that is obviously ok. Allow fx still. But also Loopers is now allowed. After all its still bass playing. I'm not sure about drum tracks as I feel that is getting into full on composition challenge and possibly getting from the simplicity side??? Really we just want the bass guitar instrument. Maybe singing? I personally wouldn't but I would really dig someone singing with just bass (and the allowed fx).
didn't we discuss that before and the idea of the challenge to a picture takes away from the composition challenge. i don't understand why this needs to be a "challenge". i thought the original idea was to get people recording, without the pressure of a composition. putting pressure on people as a challenge, or to work from a picture probably puts more pressure to make something. i know that some months in the composition challenge, i back out cos i just cant see anything in the picture, and that would happen here. just keep it open as a safe space for people to throw noodles in, with no pressure and with loops or other instrumentation if they wish. there doesnt have to be a winner or loser, just have fun with it.
21. harking back to this, i have recently signed up to the Slate Digital subscription service, played around with it last night and i am well impressed with it. $15 a month, absolute bargain
22. flickr for me, good site which is easy to link to other sites if you don't have hosting space.
23. i can see the OP's point, but as far as i recall, this is the first time i have had an email from basschat advertising something. it's not like they are sending out offers and adverts daily, seems OTT to put a feature in that effectively affects one email a year. if you don't want it, delete it.
24.
Sometime receiving negative feedback is received differently, depending on who it's coming from. Before posting anything negative to anyone, how do I know that, in the eyes of the artist, I have earned the right to say what I want to say? If I were Herbie Flowers, or Ed Friedland I'm sure anyone would accept anything I say, but as Grangur... hmmm I dunno.
Every time someone posts something to a forum they know they are opening themselves up to criticism, if they weren't willing to accept it, they wouldn't post. It depends on how the criticism is offered i guess. you could say A - "you're drums sound like utter w***, i hate them, it's sh*t" when all you mean is B - "i think you could tone down the compression as it makes the drums sound off and hard to listen to" If you offered A on one of my recordings, id call you a rude name and probably not post again. if you offer me B however, im more inclined to go back and listen to the drums again, because quite often a second set of ears makes a massive difference. Again, harsh criticism is fair enough, but setting up a sub forum to effectively slate peoples efforts isn't needed. that depends on how the criticism is offered i guess.
25. i think you could keep the concept, and open up the thread for more, including loops etc, still keeping it at 60 seconds. don't think it is an idea that is popular enough to warrant being a competition, BUT a pinned thread to allow people to share what they have noodled cant be a bad thing.
