1.
Constructive criticism is a good thing. If people always said "Yeah, that sounds great", then the songwriter/producer could be left feeling that there's nowhere to improve & can't understand why "x" sounds crap. I need someone to turn & say "That mix is dire! the "x" is too loud & "y" doesn't go with anything else". Thankfully the Mrs does that for me. She lets me know when things sound good & if something's crap she'll say "What was that, did you drop the guitar on the keys?" or something of sarcasm like when I sand a line "Oh won't you help me" in a track, she sad "What, help you to sing!". I'm up for it.
again, constructive criticism is fine, but that is part of why there is a sub section for people to share their tracks, which they do regularly. when i post a song up in it, i welcome constructive criticism. i'm not against people leaving criticism, and certainly don't believe in protecting snowflakes, but i think if you want to to critique peoples mixes it can be within the confines of the existing sharing sub forum. there is no rule there which says you cant be honest.
 2. if this add was in the uk it would probably be fine in milwaukee, you want to point out that its at least 2 4 hour bar gigs a week, where you have to load your own lights and pa etc. you could point out that you don't play standard covers like mustang sally, because that tends to turn people away. on a more serious note, you also say that its been established for 11 years, but no mention of the fact it would be a paid gig. If i saw a band that had been together 11 years, its likely that it is either going to be a bunch of mates still just enjoying themselves or a paid gig, i'd want to know what it was before i replied.
 3. So are we saying savage as in just being honest? Or savage for the sake of being mean in the hope that it might sound funny?. If the latter I can't see why people would contribute to a post like that. People who are sharing music here are open to criticism and accept it. There is a subsection where people share their recordings, if you want to offer honest critique then it can be done in there? Don't see why we'd need a thread just to slate the bad points in people's recording.
 4. every time i buy a bass i change strings and set it up to my liking, i work on the assumption other people do the same and as such have never put new strings on when selling a bass. some people are just chancers
 5. i used to play a white 50's style precision with red tort pickguard in a metal band, at the end of the day it sounded good. unless you have a classic rock style image that you have to stick to i wouldn't worry about it.
 6. if i was to be brutal, the whole thing could be done within the confines of a single stickied thread, and anyone who has a noodle can stick it in there, the challenge element just means someone has to routinely set up and manage a thread which realistically only 3 or 4 people enter. ultimately, the decision should lay with that person who does the leg work for it, but i don't see enough input or interest in it to justify keeping on top of it every month, especially given the compositions challenge is more popular.
 7. i cant remember how many ive done, ive deleted them off soundcloud i think. think the only one i have on there is the one i did with skol
 8. are you being asked to do 4 hours and carry your own lights and PA? if so make sure you are doing it for a fee
 9.
i may be unleashing my inner geek a little, but isnt that a screenshot from red dead redemption? not that that would be a bad thing, that game has some great musical moments.
i believe it may well be, i thought that when i saw it first
 10. i'm a musician, i just happen to play bass
 11.
Yeah I’ve been a bit lax with the BC challenge recently… not through any lack of enthusiasm, but lack of time! I’m involved in various remixing projects on another forum (I know, I’m such a floozy!) and am really enjoying them. My ‘plan’, in a loose sense, is to continue working on remixes for a while yet and then return to producing more of my own material later this year. Hopefully I can fit in more Basschat challenges around that as I go - work and the demands of [s]feral[/s] darling young children notwithstanding
im trying to turn my demo's into something more like an album. whilst my old band are reforming to record an album and gig. neither of which is going well currently...
 12.
Credit to Charic for that stroke of genius! He's been quiet here of late, but still lurking in the BC Admin department, doing genuisy things...
think he is wedding planning and working on an album or something i've got an idea in my head for this, a concept at least, but finding the time to settle in to do it over the other musical endeavours i'm trying to get sorted is the issue.
 13. i spend a lot of time on the recording forum, i don't really engage with the noodle bar. no offence to those who take the time to do it, but listening to a 60 second "noodle" just doesn't do it for me, so I haven't listened to anything from it since the very first entry or two. that said, anything that can get people playing is a good thing, but it just doesnt tickle my fancy.
 14.
That it is, I just grooved into the kitchen to put the kettle on. Deffo some kind of auto-wah/filter going on with the bass.
i can't dance, but this song makes you want to dance
 15.
Is Steve Vai actually famous amongst people who aren't actually musicians? Even to me he's just some widdley guitarist who doesn't seem to ever played any music I'm remotely interested in.
don't say that on GuitarChat, you will get lynched.... someone said something similar about Jaco Pastorious once, look at the sh*t storm that started
 16. i think the focus shifts when people get famous. they work to get their fame, but when they are there they play to fulfill their own egos, fill bank accounts or to appease the fans. look at bands like metallica that still spend an 18 month cycle touring after an album where they largely play classic stuff. yes they get paid a load, but at their stage, they must be driven to do it, it can't all be about the money. i bet jon bon jovi is sick to death of "livin' on a prayer", but then if you are on stage with thousands of people singing back to you, it must give you some emotions.
 17.
Yeah I agree Rob! It's a crackingly good pop song... super catchy and the production is top notch (it's produced by Max Martin who's behind a long list of number ones). [edit] PS: my fact of the day from Wikipedia… “Martin is the songwriter with third most number one singles, behind only Paul McCartney (32) and John Lennon (26). As a producer he holds the record for second-most number one singles with 20 behind only George Martin (23).” Wow… and I bet that almost nobody has heard of him other than studio nerds like me
i've heard of him AND know of his importance to pop music didn't know he's done this one tho
 18. i love this song. i'm not a fan of pop music, but occasionally you get a song which just hits the right notes in terms of vibe, groove and mood. it's perfect pop. not sure on the sound, it sounds to me like there is some kind of wah on it
 19.
I call him stupid because of the way he comes across in the vid that i posted. i did say, maybe i missed something, or maybe its a bit tounge and cheek. Like i said he writes some great music, but to dismiss Jazz like he does is stupid. To dismiss a jazz audience as he does, and maybe an amazingly talented band that is way beyond what he could play, but not be as popuar, is stupid. Its a great musician making stupid comments, and thats why i loose respect for him. i can't see any other way of seeing it.
a lot of the stuff the Gallagher do is to court controversy to boost their profile, they always have done. on the other hand, it may be his opinion, and regardless of who it offends, he is entitled to it
 20.
Do you hear me getting upset.?
well you saw fit to open a thread about it calling him stupid... so you could argue that it irked you enough to do that. for the record, i don't like jazz either, it grates on my ears. that said, i have great respect for talented jazz players, i just don't like the genre.
 21.
People like me still buy the odd CD, but mostly buy digital format music, because I like to own the file and not depend on connection to a service. But I am increasingly finding I am a little 'old-fashioned' among my peers (generally a bit younger than me, I guess because I'm immature so I fit there better ). Then, my girlfriend (who is one notch) never buys any music anymore, and relies on Spotify and some other service entirely. Her friends are the same.
i still purchase physical music on cd or vinyl more than digital music. if i buy something i want it in my hands so i can look over the art etc. i got told i was an exception because i bought a mobile phone the other day to use as (shock horror) a phone.... maybe im just old before my time as it happens i am listening to "appetite for destruction" on vinyl why i wait for people to come over.... each to their own i guess
 22. i have no desire to buy bass stuff now... or any music stuff anymore..... does that make me a bad person?
 23.
Interesting, were a 4 piece and it's always been an equal split when it comes to revenue streams, fees, tips, and merch. Even though some members are doing more work than others. If we ever start getting high pay gigs with margins you can play with, I'd have no problem with them getting a bigger cut but at the $500.00 per gig level, it's not enough bread to *quibble over. Blue *Obviously I'm a Yankee and I've been on BC too long.
we do try and split the workload and any money we do make, but in terms of organisation sometimes it is just easier to do it yourself and get it done. its great to share, but in my experience there always has to be one person who pushes things forward otherwise it stagnates and nothing gets done. i'm cynical and don't trust people to do stuff, so i'm usually that driving force. i should just be a solo musician, but i only have 2 hands.
 24.
keep your dignity and quit altogether.
This, it's hard but if he has a better feel with someone else and he is the artist the project is built around, if he wants to replace you it's his prerogative. If he feels that way, you are on to a losing battle if you stick around, so i would formally hand my notice in along with an invoice for the time spent producing, re-recording and turning his chords and vocal into a fully formed pop song.
 25. my role is front man, bassist, co songwriter/arranger, gig organiser and general of the band. i don't get paid for it, but i do it cos it just comes naturally.
