1.
I would say that we need something more like Punk rather than Nirvana. By the time that Nirvana became popular the music scene was already far too fractured for them to have very much influence outside of the rock genre. It was still perfectly possible to be making new and popular music without it having anything to do with Nirvana and "grunge". For someone like myself, listening to and creating mostly dance music influence by the various variations on House Music, Nirvana were barely a blip on my radar.
given the state if the political landscape these days a punk revolution would be handy
 2.
Well amazingly, it's been listened to and I'm onto the next stage. P
usually you will get played on local bbc stations with introducing, if you are lucky you get passed to the national stations. i have friends who have got their songs on radio 1 and 2 through it. take it to all your local radio stations as well they will often support local acts.
 3.
The Beatles are really not a like or not like proposition. They were The Beatles that's all that needs to be said. Blue
And Elvis is Elvis, Clapton is Clapton. The fact they shaped modern music doesn't mean everyone has to like them.
 4.
I don't see anyone denigrating the beatles on BC. Some will say "yeh, not my cup of tea" or words to that effect. I guess there have been a couple of more strongly worded posts intended to wind up a particularly stubborn member, but I can't think of anything recently. Got any specific examples?
agreed, generally the response here is "i love the beatles" or "not my thing but i appreciate their impact". i think everyone who plays bass respects what the beatles were and the movement they started, there are some here that may not like them, but hey.... that's not a crime
 5.
If I was playing metal I would daisy up 2 Orange tube rigs, one bass and one guitar rig with several fuzz, distortion and octave pedals. Any decent bass would work. Blue
when i played metal i used an ampeg svt with 4 x 10, a singular distortion pedal and a fender jazz bass..... a metal tone like you described would just be messy in the mix
 6. the beatles? again? surely we are due a "Jaco, Is he all that?" kinda thread this week?
 7. i used to have an ibanez EDB605 which was active and the output on that was low. i sold it in the end cos it lacked any guts.
 8. good idea for a thread. i would question if it is worth noting whether your experience comes from originals bands or covers/tribute acts. as we all do different things it may bring up additional results and cover multiple bases
 9. sounds like a scam or a chancer to me. you wouldn't buy a car, drive around in it for 2 months, change the tyres then expect the seller to pay for the tyres. if they were bad enough that he had to have them replaced, he would have spotted it when purchased, and if as you say it was said to be perfect when you had it set up he's either trying to scam you or a tool... or both
 10.
OK thanks for the info. I'll have to check which strings I have on mine.
i string mine slightly differently. i bought a set of bass vi strings, and then swapped out the low E and replaced it with a string off a standard bass. i always found the typical bass vi string to be too flimsy and that affected my intonation. i also flipped the bridge round and stopped it moving using cut up business cards. a bit DIY but it works nice now
 11. have you changed rooms? its possible that light bulbs and fittings can cause humming noises. i used to get it a lot in my old house, now i have my computer, speakers and interfaces all plugged into different sockets and its a lot cleaner
 12.
Thanks for your thoughts. We bought a couple of Squiers (a Strat and a "P" bass) at work a few years ago and I was really unimpressed with the quality of them to be honest - looks like I'd be similarly unimpressed with a Squier Bass VI. The strange thing is that I have a couple of Korean made Fenders (a Tele and a Showmaster) of my own and they are great guitars - very well made. I guess that if I want a Bass VI, I'll have to look out for a "real" Fender one, although having a quick look around, they seem to be very rare and very expensive.
to be fair, the finish quality on mine is really nice, i think my issues are known issues for an instrument of it's type, not necessarily caused by the fact it is squier. to be honest, i keep thinking about selling it, but then i don't cos it is quite cool once you get it set up to play nice
 13. i only took holidays for tours and recording, when possible i would work around it and work then go to gigs. i tried to take time off once, and found the "prep" time just turned into general house work and bullshit, so just go to gigs from work these days. with enough warning booking the time off shouldn't be an issue
 14. i have the squier version of it. its alright, quirky altho i had to come up with an odd string combo and do some set up works because the intonation kept going out, quite common apparently. it wouldn't replace my 4 Jazz basses live as it just lacks the grunt i need, but its an interesting tool in the studio
 15.
Thanks to everyone for helping me think this through. I have no experience of playing with backing tracks and my gut feeling is that I don't really want to. Trying to be open minded, I'd just about be happy to have a virtual sax player for Baker Street or maybe some strings for Elbow. However, my feeling is that if the tracks are a semi-permanent feature of the band that flesh out the guitarist's sound without adding any new instrumentation, then I'd politely decline. Clearly I need to find out a bit more about what the band will use the backing tracks for, how often, and what exactly will be on them. Can't give an update because my three attempts to speak to the drummer have so far gone unanswered.
from a purely financial point of view, you don't have to pay a computers wages so you should get a bigger share than you would if there were two guitarists
 16. i can't read music, am pretty slack with my learning of scales and arpeggios, but i know which notes sound right and which don't... that has got me through for 15 years
 17.
I am entirely aware of this. .. Still does not make it live music... It may be a great experience, but so is going to the the flicks..
well that's you're opinion, we are going to have to agree to disagree
 18.
So you're just playing along to your own record? :-) Why not go the whole hog and just mime ? It would probably make a better stage show... :-)
parts of it yes, how else do you achieve a large amount of instrumentation with 3 people? or are you suggesting that we just record 1 set of drums, one guitar and one bass and just be happy with that? world would be pretty boring if everyone did that
 19.
I suspect I'm one of the militant ones - if you use backing tracks it's simply a type of Karaoke IMHO.. Or playing along to stuff on the radio :-)
depends how you do it to be fair. if we are talking some sh*t midi stuff downloaded from a website, then it will sound like kareoke. if however the band have prerecorded everything themselves properly to create a wider sound for the band its not an issue. my band is currently a 3 piece, and we are considering recording everything ourselves and playing to backing tracks to include the sound of piano's, synths, strings etc which clearly we can't all cover on stage and generally we don't have stages big enough to fit the amount of people we'd need to get the sound live. arguably you could say it takes a better band to play to backing tracks because everything needs to be in time, and sloppy, out of time or poor playing will show up. the technology is there to allow us to create a bigger and more varied palette of sound on stage that 3 or 4 guys can't create alone. if it improves the stage show then i'm all for it.
 20. guitarist 1 week: "yes i am totally up for gigging anywhere, i just wanna play man.." next week after me getting us a gig: "ahh man i don't wanna play there, some guy had his guitar nicked there once" another time guitarist: "yes i am totally up for gigging anywhere, i just wanna play man.." 2 days before a gig that had been booked and known about for months, guitarist: "do we have a gig this week man? i can't do it, i'm going to see my gran" i'm not in that band anymore...
 21. sounds like sh*t to me, as does the programmed drums underneath
 22.
This sounds like someone looking for a solo project....I'd help him realise that dream if I were you.
i'd also be taking him to small claims court to recover the money he just deleted without asking... and then i'd probably punch him in the face
 23. the clips released so far sound good, but they still have time to f*** up the production of the album. death magenetic underneath was a good album, but the production on it ruined it, lets hope they don't do the same here. i'm looking forward to it
 24.
Songwriter. You can have the best musicians on the planet but without great songs they dont amount to much.
this, the world always needs songs
 25. you have the situation where you are business minded and fairly free. you are questioning the need to play 4 hour shows and lugging gear, something which until today you have been totally happy to do so if your other posts have been anything to go by. imo, you've made your mind up and you should be out there looking for a touring band not sitting here trying to justify it to yourself or us
