It's weird I have one too and have been recording lots of bass via DI recently (solo bass stuff) and it all just has this odd "digital" sound to me, especially open E to 5th fret A (lower or higher seems to sound all right) but it just sounds a bit flat and not really interesting, even using my amp as a DI or using a good quality DI box. In the mix I've not really noticed it and with distortion it basically is a non issue, but for a lot of the clean slower solo bass stuff I'm doing at the moment is just doesn't sound good, so I've actually gone back to doing everything with microphones. Which wasn't what I wanted as I wanted to be able to record my stuff while I'm in my flat rather than at home home in another city! Though perhaps its a case of more tweaking, I've found cab sims to be the real make or break for me hating a tone and finding it ok. That said, heard countless recordings in similar set ups where I like the sound, so who knows. It's probably just me going mad haha! Going from using an amp to using headphones/a DI/an interface sound is certainly a change and I guess just takes getting used to
3.
I did my first gig with my new amp last night, Carvin BX700. Worked far better with my S12V than the GK MB500 I had before. Both new would just about scrape into your budget, the cab being the expensive bit. As one of our guitarses said last night (looking at how the amp was set), "bloody Hell, you ain't even tickling it!". This against 2 guitarses and the drummer through the PA. And me not! Oh, and the Barefaced fits in the boot of Her Who Makes Toast By Breathing On Bread's Tigra convertible.
Glad you're liking it karl! How does it compare to the GK in terms of tone?
4. This thread is giving me mad GAS! I really want a jazz with a P neck, and a fretless to match. Must. Resist. Need. New. Amp. And. Food.
5. The metal Muff and LS-2, depends what era of his tone you're looking for... When you say similar, do you mean in terms of tone or in terms of having a clean and dirty loop? The Ashdown James Lomenzo is probably the closest other distortion in my experience as both are based of the Billy Sheehan Pearce BC-1 and have that distinct midrange. Cog effects made another pedal which kills that sound too! (Though may be a bit above the EBS in price too and for the life of me I can't remember what it's called!) Second hand LS-2 and James Lomenzo distortion could get you similar options and tone but for a smaller price tag! My only gripe with the J-lo is I wish it was more aggressive and was a full range distortion, but I have strange distortion tastes ha! Prime, please don't tempt me... I'd love to own a BC-1, would be a dream come true, but I just can't justify it since it would likely just sit in my house. Best of luck with the sale mate! (Plus I'm poor haha!)
6. So very tempted by this. Growly and grunty as I imagine? Compared to the OTB, less valvey but suitably angry when pushed? I like these as they have a lot of girth and power especially in the lows but nice spank in the high mids I know you have fab (and similar to me, shocker! haha!) taste, and I've been looking into getting one of these. Just need to scrape the money together... Either way, bumpo for a top gent!
7.
That's it. I read on here somewhere that it can do the octave down with no dry signal but I can't work out how... Which suggests you probably can't.
Definitely can. Used to run that into my big muff, just a big subby dubby sound! Can't remember which setting though, I think sub with the rest if the knobs turned down all the way down? Will get back to you on that as my BSW is on my board, at my brothers place which I haven't been to in months!
8. The plastic trombone actually came way before the plastic trumpet, as getting piston valves to work is a big challenge where as a trombone is just a tube, so the friction issue of it wearing itself apart is much less apart. Was one of the first to play both at trade shows when they were shown to the public. My buddy has a pBone and I've been meaning to get one for a while! Great little things, especially for travelling and kids!
9. This need to be recorded in some capacity! Bet that thing would sound fantastic, and not out of place filling Wembley!
10. The newer squiers are darn good, they are good enough that I don't play any fenders anymore, I feel less bad about mucking with them and treating them rough... This thread has given me major GAS for a Squire Jazz bass with a Squire P neck and some bareknuckle pickups. Only takes a quick look at the bank account to stop those thoughts though haha!
11. That's interesting (ignore my pic, it's from 3 years ago... haha! My last couple posts on BC have been too fanboyish, gulp! ) as I found for my uses, even maxed out I couldn't get the amount of drive I wanted, though I'm feeling that it's more the 'character' of the drive I wasn't totally happy with. Maybe with a hot signal and a booster in front of it, but nope, not for me! I do agree it does have a certain element of tone sculpting a tad too much where was hard to get away from that Billy type sound, so I ended up moving mine on very quickly. I did like it a lot, and the compression was great, but I needed the money that little bit more and it wasn't quite enough for me to keep it. Would get another if I had the money spare though
12.
In that case I bow to your superior knowledge!
I think maybe pity at my lack of life would more apt haha!
13.
I think that must be a one off bass, if you look on the internet generally he definitely has fret rattle.
Yes and no. RhysP is (generally) right here. (Warning: Queue fan boy here) The Attitude X manual stated his prefered set up string heights. And having met him and played one of his newer basses, he had it notably above where I do, I have my 4 strings middle low, it's lower than my bands guitarists action, and on my 6 string I have it just above as low as it can go, that said, I pluck pretty hard and hammer the strings if I get carried away live, so that's maybe middle low on the "super low to super high" spectrum as I like minimal/zero noise to maximise core tone. Feeling the difference is nice as it's just really smooth! Makes going back to my Attitude a little bit of a workout as I play the 6/7 string basses 90% of the time these days! He talks about his set up quite a lot on the facebook group and did a video about it from the Yamaha Attitude event day (IIRC, and filmed by the incredible Jon Willis who built the Wife replica featured on No Treble), and it's certainly not part of his tone unlike Entwistle or Chris Squire. I think John Entwistle's Status Buzzards have/had the lowest action of any basses I've ever seen. I believe Wolverine on here used to have one and agreed with this a while back. Billy having super low rattly action is a common misconception tagged to him due to his monster playing, but with hands as strong as his he doesn't need it, his main bass for years and years the famous "Wife" modded fender P has action on the middle high side, which is likely why it became his preference. He plucks with quite a lot of force in a very firm and clean fashion, and it wouldn't work with super low action as it would get noisy. You do hear in videos in his home on his basses at home that there is slight 'fret grind' on like the low E and Low D but on tour most definitely higher tha usual, and little to no fret rattle along the board. His studio and home set up is lower for ease of playing but his action gets higher the longer into a tour he gets as he really thrashes the bass live. End massive fan boy moment... Would you believe I've not played my Attitude or listened to any Vai/Mr Big in months till today?! True I swear sir...
14. They weren't hugely costly to begin with, and they are more associated with the more intermediate price bracket, and the RBX 774/775 range which is why the body contouring is like them. String spacing on them isn't too tight, it's around the 17mm mark, Much larger than whatever he uses now, 14/15mm I'd imagine, since he uses 5 string bass necks on his Bongos! A guy in Aberdeen has an RBX JM2 and uses two TRB1006s, so Yamaha are doing something right. Would love a Yammy (an RBXJM or a JM2, or a TRB1006! Love them all haha) to compliment my Ibby and Attitude... (Also, first post of 2014! Happy New Year! )
15. Looks like an F# to F, That thing is a monster, beautiful too! best of luck with the sale!
16.
A huge amount! I wonder why he doesn't use it!
Having seen him live several times over the last 6 or so years I'd respectfully disagree. It's been getting bassier in the last few years. I think he's learning haha! My Attitude thunders out the lows with growl to boot. Love it!
17. Great little piece haha! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9P8C6-XqaNs
18. So much want! Unexpected bills means I can't have it Best of luck with the sale!
19. I love these for how they react with other pedals. They sound awesome combined with muff's! A friend of mine bought one of these when he was in Japan, Wish I could afford it!
20. Tried putting a weight on the strap? I found the neck dive on my Attitude annoying, but I got used to it, I kind of like it, but don't miss it when it's not there! But live if I have a small weight on the strap towards the bridge strap button, plus a wireless pack attached/taped to the strap evens out the weight nicely! Something to consider
21.
Pretty sure Nolly in Peripery uses Fractal FX live, in fact the whole band does. Think they record using pedals (Nolly loves the B7K famously) and then program those sounds into the Fractal for live. Nolly is also a guitarist, so might be the right guy to reach out to for an opinion (and maybe a Fractal contact) Si
Yep! Axe FX with B7K in the effects loop, into a Matrix GT1600FX into two Zilla Neo loaded 6x10 cabs. Maybe ask him about the Matrix too Dan? He's an insanely awesome guitarists. Was sad when he left Red Seas Fire, incredible band! His vik signature is one of my favourite guitars, and he is simply one of my favourite guitarists. Not to mention his awesome work with Bareknuckle pickups! I've messed with the AXE FX as a guitarist pal of mine owned one for his home studio before he moved. Best thing was the tone matching/capture was insanely good. I actually quite like it for bass, much better for the highly dressed sounds, with lots going on, for a pure signal it's not the best. On guitar I find the cleans a little lifeless, and with bass they aren't amazing, but it sounds fantastic when you get into layers of amps and effects to create some spectactular tones. One of my favourites is the RAT model along side a clean tone, blended with a driven SVT sim, with some nice compression on the clean side. Sounds like a monster! Nolly's distortions tones (check the headstock cam video of MAKE TOTAL DESTROY which is just him, that tone is this) from before Periphery started bringing stage gear again (a more recent thing) were from the studio where they used the tone match on the AXE FX from him playing into it from his Ampeg/Darkglass sound and it sounds awesome. It's a feature my buddy loved as it meant he could leave his boutique pedals at home, or the rare ones at home. Not sure how it works though! Also, not to derail, but you see Nolly has a signature Dingwall prototype now? Full reveal at winter Namm Will be a Combustion I'm pretty sure, in his classic yellow. I hope they do a 6 string version, but not likely as he doesn't have any dingwall 6's.
22. Leo Tomasz Dorsz from Red Seas Fire uses one of these for bass, but anyone really tried one of these out for bass in anger? Dood?
23. Almost certainly a custom, if it's only one I'd say a custom built ERB as no way I'll be able to afford one for a good few years! Otherwise a custom Super P would be lovely
