Vintage Stingray copy* I had a terrible habit of breaking the bottom tuning peg off this one Epiphone Thunderbird* Had terrible neck dive, I think that is its best feature. Fender P-bass 1978 Bought for £450 then swapped for the T-40, who's previous owner then sold for £900, It was black with a rosewood neck and had been on a few world tours with The 60ft Dolls, so it was a bit battered, It used to glow a really cool colour under UV light too. I really miss this bass. It was my first decent bass and my first Fender. Peavey T-40 1979* There's a thread in gear porn if you wanna know more about them. I adore this bass, Natural/black/maple in colour. Warwick Streamer Stage 1 V Unquestionably the worst £1,800 ive ever spent, I was in a metal band at the time and bands like Limp Bizkit and Mudvayne were using warwicks so I thought Yes, clearly this is a clever way of spending some money, a boutique bass that should serve me well for the rest of time. Oh how wrong i was, Damn nearly put me off active circuitry for life. But it was, as I discovered a while after the metal band split up, lovely for funk. CIJ 1966 Fender Jazz (reissue)* Candy Apple Red with matching headstock and dots 'n' bound neck, I fell in love with this bass on sight and I plays like I dream I had to have it. It turned out to have really low output pickups and the worst bridge in history but this was soon rectified with a pair of Shed "Hot n Dangerous" pickups and a Badass II. It is now pretty much my number one bass even though I prefer playing P-basses. It does get slightly heavy after a few hours though. 1970 something Gibson Grabber (slidey Pup model)* Our git-arist pretty much talked me into buying this becaust Thrice have toured and recorded with one for the last few albums and they really do have a stunning bass tone. Sadly he was right and it does sound awesome, but the slightest atmospheric pressure change and it is all over the place. In the year I've owned it its been set up/adjusted at some expense 3 times. I really wish it didnt have these problems. It has some neck dive issues too, but the tone makes this forgiveable, also its no where near as bad as the T-bird for it. Modern MIA Fender P-bass* I straight swapped this for my warwick. It has an MIM rosewood neck and a USA body, Full hipshot hardware a hell of a paint job and no onboard controls, If i could only get on with the Delano pickup it is brandishing I would love this bass, I'm gonna put an SPB-3 or maybe a Di Marzio Model P in it and see what happens. If i still dont like it I might replace it with a stingray. Aria Pro II SB Elite II* My most recent aquisition, a very stable beautifully made and balanced bass with really good versatility and almost absolute player comfort. It does lack soul though, typically japanese. May also be re homed to fund the stingray if the P-bass goes Trace Elliot T-bass (pending delivery)* I will let you know when I comes, suffice to say I am pretty excited about this one

This thread is giving me terrible GAS, anyone got a black/white/natural maple boarded (preferably birds-eye) 2eq looking for a good home? Edit - going cheap

I also have A CIJ 66 jazz in CAR with the matching headstock and a lovely "dots n bound" neck. Its curently suffering with a little bit of fret buzz on the low E but other than that she is a beauty

I also especially like the stingray
yo yo yo, ok chaps i have this known issue with my fender jag, the hissing,,,god how i hate the hissing. its really bad in active mode especially with the treble boost high and i noticed its kinda bad with my gain turned up on my little line6 lowdown. this all becomes quiet when i touch any part of the bass that has metal. so how oh how do i fix this????
Im not 100% on this but.... I would recommend copper lining all the control cavities, Did this to my Jazz when I installed new pickups and it shut it right up You can get sheets of sticky back copper from Maplin I believe.

Well I've taken the scratch plate off and upon inspection there has been some extra routing done, but the wiring looks a little bit cow boyed, not that i am any expert on wiring, but it doesnt look neat and there is a worrying amount of insulation tape. I am gonna get it professionally fitted with something and re wired, but I still cant decide what to go with, I hadnt previously considered a model P but i like the sound clips, I am still leaning toward the SPB-3 becuase i have always loved them. What is the consensus on them? I may even wait a while and get a wizard, infact that seems like the best idea at the moment, everyone seems to like them and from what I am told they are a very easy company to deal with. I am told the orignal Model P is the holy grail if you can find one, Ive personally never played one. Perfect tone is out there somewhere, and its up to me and my P-bass to find it

If my Jazz didnt have a red headstock it would be getting a new body right about now.

That's a sweet looking jazz but I need more!!! I first discovered this colour when walking past Electric Lady Land in Bristol and there were matching p-bass and tele in this colour in the window, they grabbed my attention straight away and I've loved it ever since.

The ultimate marmite colour, I personally love it, anyone have anything in this curious colour? What are other peoples opinions on it? Post your pics here

Duuuuuude I hope I can write a simular thread in years to come. You have owned some absolute beauties and some very interesting basses, I particularly like your Ricky

MEGA lol, that is awesome, and pointless at the same time, I like these qualities

Turns out mine is a 79 build. I gave it an outing today and it's damn near broke my back, but I still love it Flat Eric you are a mind of information about these fair play. What else do you know about them? I'm tempted to get a railed one now just to hear the contrast between them I found out from the previous owner that it set him back a mere 25 notes. I still think I came out on top though

I'm thinking the spb-3 may be the way to go. Every sound clip I hear I like. I just hope it sounds good in context. Also it's by far the least expensive option. If it will do for Steve Harris there can't be much wrong with it

Shuker 5 String Precision- Picked up today!!
Well, after setting off at 6 this morning and completing a round-trip of 360 miles, my 5 string P Bass is finally here. It took a fair bit longer than Jon estimated, but once I saw it in the flesh and played it I would have waited another 6 months for it!! It is beautiful and I think Jon has done a superb job. It's exactly what I asked for but honestly it has come out better than I ever hoped. The EMG's sound amazing and the neck is exactly the same dimensions as my old Stingray 5 string (exactly as I spec'd it). The colour is amazing and took my breath away when I first saw it. The ash grain comes through incredibly well and if anything, the pics don't do it justice. The Mother of Pearl on the neck is beautiful and has a very deep lustre. He's a thoroughly decent guy and an incredibly talented craftsman. He even fitted a passive switch to my Stingray FOC while I waited. I'm sure this is not to everyone's taste, but I spec'd out and asked for a traditional P Bass with a few modern touches. I think he's delivered it and more. It will fit in beautifully with my Stingray and Fender P Bass. I'm seriously happy and would not hesitate to use Jon again if I ever decided to buy another custom bass. I hope you like it as much as I do. Here's my new bass named after my Wife who chose the colour scheme.
This bass is beautiful, where did you get the dog ornament thingy from? my mum has the same one -
I hear you man, Active ciruitry is the devil, and batteries belong in remote controls, not basses. My amp isnt the problem either, I have an Ampeg SVT CL and 8x10, both of which are in fine working order. The main issue is that the P gets lost in the mix between guitars and the kick drum live, where my jazz doesn't, theres just too much mud, I know comparing Jazzes to Ps is completely ridiculous because they are different beasts. I prefer playing P-basses to jazzes and that P with a pick and an ampeg 8x10 sound is what I want but this Delano thing is just too fussy and too modern if thats the right word for my taste.

If it aint broke don't fix it bro

Hey guys, Im having a bit of trouble choosing a new pickup for my P-bass, let me set the scene for you. The P in question has no onboard controls at all, is wired stright from pickup to jack and I am hoping to keep it this way, previously my settings never changed from full volume and full tone so i dont really see the need for controls, plus I have my Sans-amp BDDI for tweaking. I am hoping the P is gonna become my live bass (or at very least a backup for my Jazz). It is currently fitted with a Delano thingy (the one with the 4 massive MM stylee pole pieces) which I cannot get on with at all, I cant help but think it was designed to work with active electronics, It is far too muddy and no where near high output enough for me, It gets lost in the mix live where my jazz (which by the way has a pair of shed 'hot and dangerous' pickups) doesn't. My first thought was the Di Marzio split P (the one in the Yamaha Attitude), but I reckon this is gonna suffer from the same problems as the Delano. Then my attention turned to the Duncan SPB-3 the 'old faithful' of the p-bass replacement pickup world. but to be honest Im not entirely sold on this idea after playing a Mike Dirnt P-bass. So now I am in a world of possible custom efforts from Wizard or possibly shed again but I dont know what I want. Is it possible/a good idea to split a Jazz pickup like a P-bass one and just get that in? Am I asking too much to want my P to have the attack/definition that my jazz has? What can i do? Cocco
