1.
Tone-master indeed! Speaking of which, which bass is he using here? Looks like some kind of Status (or at least graphite) Fender-type neck... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TqRJtUorPMg
From what I can see, it looks like his Roland - Based on a Greco GOB. He also used to use an Ibanez RS900.
2. I've been watching this from the start and find it hard to believe that it is still here. I have one of these and from memory, quite a few BCers are 301 and 302 owners. If anyone is dithering over taking on this bass, from what I can see it's very nice indeed. If you have nver played one, I think you would be quite surprised. Very punchy, full of depth "Good for Metal" "Great for Jazz"!! Joking aside, this single pick-up bass will suit all sorts of genres (after all a P only has one!!) and will bring a smile to your face. Mine is not heavy and unless you have it strapped right up to your chin, is not head heavy and is very comfortable to play. Had mine out a couple of weeks ago, through the new Genz Benz rig, I bought from PeteTexas, a few weeks ago - Very, Very nice indeed! Someone give this a good home.
3. I have read all through this old thread, brought to the top again by Stoney. Very interesting. I have never played a Wal and don't recall having even picked one up! Shame on me. I realise it's a little of topic of the original post but could some Wal fans/owners point me in the direction of threads that would explain the different models. All of a sudden, I have a healthy interest in the Marque. May even start a Wal fund! Cheers.
4. Big fan of Lizzy. First live viewing of Phil and the boys was on the Johnny the fox tour - '76?? For me, he is a legend and I was very upset when he passed away. That said. . . . . . and please forgive me for this but. . . . . . . . if he was going to continue down the drugs route, would it be a great thing for him to have slipped into obscurity as he declined in health - look at Brian Robertson now! Sort of Phil Spector - a legend in his day but all I can think of now is the prison mug shots. I really am sad that he went so soon but sometimes that is how they are frozen in time - Hendrix, Elvis, Kurt Curbain, Jim Morrisson etc. For me, he is frozen in time! We play a lot of Lizzy and I will always be a big fan - perhaps the main reason I leaned toward four strings and not six.
5.
I wish I'd never sold on my '84 Ibanez Blazer. Bought it off FlatEric and used it solidly for 18 months. I bloody loved that thing I did. I think I fell out of love with the natural finish and stupidly moved it on. Tone in spades and lovely worn in maple neck. I used the money to buy my current squeeze (BB424x) so it's not all bad I suppose. Truckstop
You know what mate. . . . . . even before reading this thread, I was just thinking the other day, I wonder where it has ended up. I really great bass that I moved on after I got my first RB650. It just did what it said on the tin and it didn't matter if you bumped it into something. I am now looking for another one!!! Anyone know where it is?
6. Jenny - Hi. I now have a more compact rig but still look at other units (as we all do) just in case I have missed something that may be of use to me. So I read your review. I would just like to say how concise and objective it is. Easy to read and interesting. Ta.
7. It takes a lot to get me going. . . . . . Nuff said!!
8. This may help and is my belief. A bass I still have - My Hondo Pro (which sounds more like a P than mnost P's!!), was ftted a few years ago, with some "Grant" strings I bought in the 70's - still in the sleeves and in a packet. Tucked away at the bottom of a box, away from view! So I had them for 35 odd years before I fitted them. Sounded SO sweet! Still on there, still sounding sweet. Basses I play/rehearse/gig with - strings have a limited lifespan. Some go off relatively quickly others seem to go on and on but at the point the can only offer something bordering on a Dull Thud, they're off!!
9.
So is that just two 6 pole switches I need ? Will any one the right size do or do I buy these ones ? http://www.vintagegi...t&view=category Cheers
Just had an awful thought!! I didn't see the face of the scratchplate. Maybe the holes have beed butchered! You may be lucky but if they have been opened out Got to dash - will come back to you later.
10.
Is there a bass you haven't owned, FE?
Alembic, Sandberg, BC Rich, Fernandes, Framus, Wal, Kramer. . . . . . I could go on and on. Mind you. . . . . . Still plenty of time!
11. How Much?????? I was overjoyed to get about £80 for mine. http://flatericbassandguitar.blogspot.co.uk/2012/03/jolana-basso.html Built down to a price but didn't sound too bad, from memory.
12. They are not the original switches - not even close!!!!! The correct ones/size have always been available! Why, oh why, oh why?? This is the plate from my "Project T-40" Even this has a replacement switch but of the "correct size" Just change the switches - easily found and I can help if required. Cheers.
13. Hello mate. Can you show me your issues - the switches should not be different - it may have been messed around with. Have also sent you a PM, the curiosity is killing me, as to what the problem is. Cheers.
14.
My missus found me an amazing example of one from the states and I was finally allowed to get my hands on it yesterday it's bloody wonderful! I told her I'd be scared of wrecking it, but she insists that I give it the use it deserves as it would be a waste otherwise
Welcome to the fold, Oh fellow Forty owner!! Very nice. As I said before, last of the line - Bat switches and Nylon nut. The one on the right is just before yours - still has the die cast nut. Chip Todd said it was odd they change to a Nylon nut - the die cast item came out of a family tool, making several other parts. So, everytime the tool was operated, it made a nut anyway. They toook it out and threw it it back into the melting pot???? I chose these two for the magazine feature, as the one on the left is the most mellow, warm and old school I have - the other one is the most loud and angry!!!! Anything you want to know, drop me a line. If you want to learn more about the Forty's, go to my blog - lots of info there. Cheers.
15.
Checkout the Genz Benz Contour too really pokey combo and can be had for your budget.
+1 I have just bought a 2 x 10 Contour from PeteTexas, of this parish. I never use this word lightly - but what an awesome bit of kit. On it's own would very easily cope with a pub gig - with an extension (I am using an Ashdown ABM 212 at the mo') it goes up to 500 watt. Thunderous sound!!!!!! Highly recommended!
16. Guess who is sitting at work with not a lot to do! Something a bit different - Ray Cooper. Electra Outlaw.
17. This one is a very nice shade of blue. It's also a very nice bass to play! Turns to camera. . . . . . Nice!
18. Ooops. Problem with the link! Link now fixed! http://flatericbassandguitar.blogspot.co.uk/2014_12_01_archive.html Cheers.
19.
Oh god, everything! Body length, width (at each end), depth/thickness, scale length, distance from string break at the bridge to end of the neck. Position of strap buttons might be useful too! Thanks a lot Eric, sending loads of Xmas cheer over Alex
I'll get on the case over the next couple of days. All the best to you and yours - your folks still got the pub??
Two necks left if you're interested in purchasing one, Alex.
Mmmm. what necks are these?
20. Welcome Dave. Keep at it, you'll soon be up to speed. The Yam is a good choice - nice one. Hope to see you gigging next year! Cheers.
21. Hiya mate - I have a B2A - what do you need? Cheers.
22. Hi to all of you out there, in BC land To commemorate my 200th post on my blog, I have created links to some of the most popular features. Click on the link and it will take you to that post - so if you are looking for something specific, its saves you searching and trawling to find it. The most popular post, buy far, is on this little beauty, below - swiftly followed by the feature I did on Peter Cook, which after all this time, still gets a lot of visits. If you go here and scroll down to the 199th post, and start at the top. . . . when you get to the bottom, go up to the top of the 200th post and start from there. That way, they will be in date order. http://flatericbassandguitar.blogspot.co.uk/2014_12_01_archive.html It is not for profit, so you wont' get bombarded with ads or pop-ups. Hope you enjoy it - there is a link to get in touch, if you are an owner or are just interested in what is there and you have a question. Happy Christmas reading. Cheers.
23. Dear Sam. Two things strike me - you seem to be looking for a New bass and you want something that will be comfortable. You also have quite a budget. Speaking from experience - anything Thunderbird ish - Explorer, Gibson RD etc, is not the most comfortable thing to play. Great instruments but not built for comfort. You like the idea of a P/J - good idea, lots of tonal range. There are also other things out there. A good High Quality, "Used" instrument would only break into half of your budget. Aria SB - 1000, 900, R 60, Elite, SB Special. All very well balanced and comfortable to play. A true classic. Ibanez RB 650. RB920 (single pick-up) - has a lot of tonal range and is possibly one of the most comfortable basses to play and is light in weight. Earlier, now becoming more collectable, Peavey Foundation - terrific sounds, fast neck, not too weighty, and very comfortable. I could list a load more but the idea is to lean you towards looking at an alternative. Just a thought. Cheers.
24. Jon, you must find an excuse to use this!!
25. As my gran used to say. . . . . If wishes were horses etc. Truly, a rare old beast. Wonder where it is now?
