  1. With the widespread use of IEMs aren't 8 x 10" rather last season? Peace Davo
  2. Then if I play reggae style with my thumb and palm muting - well frankly folk start to run for the hills. Davo
  3. Actually, it's a really good question and when you play an open string say an E through a 12" speaker it sounds good but not necessarily face melting. Play the same E through a 15" or an 18" speaker (remember them) and it does sound different (more rounded, heavier, richer?) but it's the same note. When I play alone through my church sub-woofer my face does indeed begin to melt. Not sure any of the explanations so far cover my facial deformations. Davo
  4. I'm coming in cold here so forgive me. We're using a behringer X32 desk with PM1 headphone amps (wired) at church. Can anyone shortlist some wired non-moulded quad driver IEMs (for a bassist and drummer) that I can look at? Regards Davo
  5. It used to be that 40 - 100 gauge bass strings were the norm. Now it seems that 45 - 105 gauge is the most common gauge. However, the latter gauge generates higher tensions. The greater the thickness of the string the higher the tension required to pitch the same note. So if your bass feels stiff or taut you should reduce the gauge of the strings. This reduces the tension and may make it easier to play. Regards Davo
  6. I can't answer your $20 question. But that's the case for all commodities. It may seem like good news for consumers but ultimately it's bad news for UK plc. Davo
  7. Amazon Global - I'm guessing this is an attempt to destroy every reselling business on the planet? So if I go for Amazon Global you get: If however, I go for my normal provider: www.stringsdirect.co.uk So how are UK vendors going to stay in business? £25.96 versus £33.99. 23.5% saving. Depressed. Davo
  8. I've bought from him and received them too! Did take a while, by which time I no longer needed them! Sold them on gum tree. Is Bare Knuckle an option? Should be going British from now on : ) Davo
  9. My face is all over the floor. It's not pretty. That is a great vid. Nice one. Davo
  10. I do love this topic. Having all basses in the same colour does help for sure. Of course, honesty is the best policy but sometimes you don't want to have to justify your purchases. i get it. Peace Davo
  11. Massive Budgie fan here. He was one of my early inspirations. Absolutely great P-bass tone. Total dude. Davo
  12. Sting is a legend. Some of his best catchiest basslines are really simple, eg walking on the moon, so a question I'd like to ask is: Does he compose a bassline or does he just feel it? How much instruction does Sting give to Vinnie Colaiuta or does he let Vinnie work out his own drum parts (e.g. Seven Days on Ten Sumners Tales) ? Stings' thumb technique seemed to arrive later on in his career (as far as I can tell), what precipitated the change? Please mention that his tour with Paul Simon was hugely enjoyable. Regards Fanboi Davo
  13. What about the neck? My '64 has a fabulous slim "C" neck (back to front) - is this neck nice and slim? The only thing I don't like with modern Fenders is the light coloured rosewood. I'm spoilt obvs, but I do-likes-me a dark rosewood. Davo
  14. The examples you stated sounded perfectly reasonable. I guess it will always sound critical coming from a newbie. If they've always practised/played "their way" then they are unlikely to change overnight. Plus you have to build up some credit/respect first and that can only come with sticking around. That said, neither examples sounded hopeful long term. So no, I don't think you're too opinionated. Regards Davo
  15. And yet he's replaced his drummer of 19 years - so loyalty is maybe no longer his thing? Peace Davo
  16. I'm deffo not saying that natural ash and black/black/maple was the only choice in the 70's but - these colours remind me the most of 70's Ps. Hope I'm a bit clearer. Davo
  17. Nuts. You can't blame a fella for trying ... Davo
  18. I play drums - where's the gig? Peace Davo
  19. 70's Fender basses are notoriously variable in quality. My '76 had the bridge in the wrong place. The 80's Precisions might be a better choice from that perspective. That said the classic colours from the 70's are natural ash and all black, both with maple necks. The all-black body/scratchplate and maple neck a la Phil Lynott and Roger Walters would be my choice of this era. You could buy this from any decade and as others have said you need to try them out. The pre-CBS necks were, in my experience, the thinnest necks made by Fender and my '64 is very slender. I much prefer the thinner necks and you may also prefer them judging by your love of the Geddy Lee. In this case, a reproduction pre-CBS Precision might be the way to go. Should be fun trying them out. Be wary of the E string. In my experience, the E-string can be quite variable in output and tonal quality on Precisions. Peace Davo
  20. 6 basses 2 straps. Both top quality wide leather straps. Why do you need more than 2? Peace Davo
  21. Well, I am an endorsee (not really - I just love them) of the Sunbeams. The Fat beams are stainless steel so that's going to be a big difference between them as the Sunbeams are nickel. I have tried Hi-beams and Sunbeams and prefer Sunbeams but I have not tried Fat-Beams. That said what I like about Sunbeams is that they are very even toned over time and over the different size strings. I find they last well and feel fabulous. I use 40-100 gauge and they bend and vibrato like magic. I use them on fretted and fretless. That's my penny-worth Davo
  22. I'm a signed up nickel DR Sunbeam purist - stainless steel has too much jangle to start with but then loses it dramatically, whereas nickel seems to be more consistent over time. That's my experience. Davo
  23. Treble and bass clef does my head in. For the sake of 2 tones why are they not the same notes just different octaves? FFS that has to be the man's stupidest idea since well ever. Unless someone can explain why they are different? Davo
  24. Michael league's interview is a bit too brief for me. There's very little to get stuck into. I'm sure there will be more recorded though ... Regards Davo
