1. Folks I've searched both this forum and the internet and cannot find any lightweight knobs a la Fender 1960/61 Jazz, ie that fit the CTS concentric pot. Has anyone solved this mystery? Regards Davo
2. Mine is embarrassingly simple: '64 Precision Aguilar 500 Barefaced Super Compact That's it. Literally nothing else except tuners and leads. Davo
3. White is my least favourite. Too contrasty. Black gets my vote looks more serious than white. Tort is OK. Obviously IMHO. davo
4. go for a vintage refin. Good value - great aged wood - 1965 or 1966 there are some P's going for $3.5 - 5k. Several are pre-CBS. Look in: reverb.com gbase.com andybaxterbass.com Regards Davo
5. I have vintage Fenders, which have been bought mostly based on the feel of the neck. This would be incredibly difficult to replicate in a new build. If I enjoy the feel of a bass, I play better. If you look at the prices of mid 60's Jazz and Precisions and new custom-built Fenders, I'm included to opinion that the vintage instruments are very modestly priced indeed. If you played a violin, as exampled above, you would have to pay magnitudes more for a quality instrument. Regards Davo
6. `i'm with Paul Warning. Just get a battery operated amp and use your usual bass. That way you'll be heard and can sit anywhere and be part of the fun. I have a fretless Godin which sounds gorgeous but in terms of times I've used it in anger - it is a waste of money. Davo
7. Be nice - I've been looking for a real 60/61 Jazz for many years and have yet to find one that is light (8 lbs target weight), cheap (highly modified doesn't bother me) and with a neck with perfect feel. I have a '64 P, which is to-die-for in terms of relic looks and playability. Also the oval "C" neck is the slimmest I've ever played on a Precision and is an absolute fave. I confess I prefer Precisions over Jazzes, looks, lighter body and so on. I also love Brazilian rosewood necks. There, I've said it. So, I've been looking for a 60's modified Precision, which I could turn into a J-J configuration. This would tick all the boxes. And Jeff Andrews' J-J Precision sounds exactly like vintage Jazz to me, which of course is the sound I'm going for. I also have a luthier who would make this from scratch and exactly match my Precision neck and even include Brazilian rosewood slab board. He could do a heavy relic and include the 60/61 dual-concentric configuration. The down side is that the bass would be new and I'm not really a fan of new basses. I love the played in feel of the '64 P. Madness aside, have I missed anything? Is there another way? Anyone done something similar? Jeff's sound: Regards Davo
8. I have a few Ps! I find the older the P the less the GAS Try it : ) Davo
9. This is good. I play bass and drums at church. If the drummer is a no-show - the leader invariably asks me to swap from bass to drums. Science says this is wrong! Davo
10. Thanks Dannybuoy for explaining that tapewounds are really roundwounds. This explains a lot. Sorry for the rant. Davo
11. IS NO-ONE LISTENING? I said that I don't like flats. I have nickel rounds on any bass with strings! HOWEVER, even though I don't like anything about flats (feel, tension, sound) I do like the 750Ns. Most of the posts here rant about their pet hates with flats. I agree with all of them - that's the whole point. Am I going mad ...
12. Folks you all seem to fall into my category of disliking flats because of the feel and tension. The sound is another thing. These are low tension (they feel like 40-60-80-100 rounds) and feel completely different from other flats I've tried. They're somehow more musical more playable than other flats. The P bass is my (2nd) Precision and the other is fitted with rounds. So that's my goto bass. I thought if I had two Precisions - one with flats and one with rounds I'd be sorted. Turns out now I am. They cost around £40 but are extremely difficult to get hold of. Seem to be sold out everywhere I tried. Honestly flat haters: try the 750N. Davo
13. Well I just put on La Bella Black Nylon low tension flats on an unloved Precision. Now I'm not a fan of flats except on acoustic basses. These flats replaced La Bella regular flats. OMG, the bass felt completely different and sounded so much better to my ears than flats normally sound. The tone range on the Precision worked too. The bass was easier to play and slides and vibrato worked in a way that just wasn't happening with the regular flats. So if you don't like flats. Try the 750N and see what you think. Regards Davo
14. Whatever you do it's still 10 lb hanging on your shoulder. I totally agree with the Res-o-lite tuners or equivalent, which helps reduce the weight and balance. I put them on all my Fenders (including pre-CBS ones). Don't tell the bass-police. I would seriously consider another bass for gigging. Davo
15. Yeah, you could hear the bass, very groovy bass, very humble singer too! Davo
16. I totally respect someone not liking what they've done to a sacred classic. Their philosophy is to bring Jazz back to pop. I like having to work at it and discovering the tune quite late. The Bad Plus do some killer David Bowie tunes and it's amazing that sometimes it just takes three notes to recognise a song. I'm general not a fan of modern jazz drumming. This guy I can cope with - others are just too busy and disjointed with no groove! Cheers Davo
17. Comfortably numb is a killer tune in the first place. So, have you heard The Bad Plus' version? Totally in love ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ar30KyQFnIc Davo PS great URB tone
18.

orgasmic
hypnotic
body-moving
oh-yes-that's-the-spot
Davo
19. Good question OP

'64 Precision
Cliff Bordwell custom ball bass
Fretless Jaco Jazz
Fretless Godin A4
Davo
20. Were you tempted by the Warwick Star Bass II, which has 2 humbuckers? I know it's not period correct but that Warwick has the most impressive sound range of any bass I've seen on the t'internet. Just thinking. Davo
21. Don't you need to dig in more to get growl, i.e. pluck the string harder. Works very well on my Jazz around the 12th fret. Also a higher action helps. Though high action is kryptonite to me - yuk. Davo
22. Massive fan of Sunbeams here. Worth a try if you are a nickel fan. Mine seems to last a long time. Even when the initial freshness has gone (ie zing reduced) they have a lovely tone. I would also say that if you generally find you are missing fatness, punch or growl - turn up the amp! Davo
