1.
Hi Al, I only use 35" scale these days but I would always suggest DR strings to people looking for a change. I use Lo-riders or if I can't get them Hi-beams. The MM Fat-beams look interesting, I might try those next.
I'm a big fan of DR Strings - Sunbeams are my default choice. I like Fat Beams too - might give 'em another whirl when I put the new pickups in.
What bass is it? The reason i ask is that i have found different basses like different strings, especially 5 or 6 strings with b strings,
It's a Shuker custom jobby.
Alan, I have eventually settled on Stainless DR LoRiders (45-125) on my Stingray 5. I tried all sorts of strings and these have come out the best.
Thanks Dave - hope you're feeling better mate.
2. We used to do a regular gig in Morecambe and the landlord was always trying to jump on the drums and play. I asked our drummer what the hell his game was and he told me he was the drummer in Pinkerton's Assorted Colours who had a top 20 hit in the 60s. I didn't embarrass myself in front of the guy but I am embarrased to say I remember the song well.
3. I'm in a very happy place bandwise at the moment, never thought I would be after the demise of my last band Nice Guy Eddie. I do approx 1 gig a month, mostly blues festivals with Junkhouse Dog - a superb blues harmonica player and I've just joined The Silver Dogs who are a real class act and lovely, lovely people too. They play 'ambient folk rock' to sit down paying audiences - I'm really enjoying the music cos it's new and very challenging which is doing no end of good for my playing.
4. My latest 5 stringer is a 34" scale bass - the first I've owned. It's lovely bass but the B string is a bit mushy. All the other 5ers have been 35" scale and without exception, had much clear sounding and more useable B strings. Are there any strings with a particularly good B string for 34" scale? The bass came with Elixirs which I don't like and is currently strung with Ernie Ball S/S which aren't much better.
5. Phew...excellent stuff Russ
6.
Glad to hear that - you seemed pretty shaky about it t'other day. Bit of adrenalin's a wonderful thing!! Revolver Club - Birkenhead. Late show but what a cracking gig. If you're fussy about the monitors though - take your own.
I had to put a lot of time in Dave (as usual) to get up to speed and yeh, I was a bit edgy about doing the gig but it went really well. Birkenhead? Bloody hell mate, that's a bit of a trip for you innit?
7. Damn - I want that Marooshnikvladivostock but I'm skint Pedro -
8. Played at the Bitter Suite last night a reunion gig for The Lamb, which used to be Preston's top venue when it was open. It was the first gig with my new band The Silver Dogs - I've only been with them a couple of weeks but had managed to learn enough to do an hour's set. We completely blew the audience away and I only made a couple of minor booboos so today, I'm very tired but very happy.
9. + 1 for the LaBellas, if not TI flats are superb IMHO
10. Very nice gillento
11. +1 I'd give my middle testicle for this bass - it oozes quality
12. I feel a change coming on in my den and I'm looking at my Tascam BT, which I currently use with headphones (which I don't like). How do you use yours? Headphones? Through the PC or hi-fi? Is there a mixer involved? Curious of Preston
13. I had a lot of good service from my GK 1001RBII - pleanty loud enough, not too heavy, great tones. I'm a big fan of Markbass too but if size and weight aren't a big issue, I'd buy the GK head personally.
14.
If you can't remember what you're playing on bass then you might be turning into a guitarist!
I am a guitarist
15. You keep finding these basses Dave It looks a cracker
16.
I've got no hope. The wife found me trying to put the breakfast cereal in the fridge on several occasions lately. So as for advice on remembering songs, no chance.
At least you found the fridge
17. ..because a nice, well made, great sounding bass inspires me to pick it up and play it whereas most but not all 'cheap' basses I've played just inspired me to light a fire.
18.
Get some blank postcards that you can write down the chord sequence or trigger points on. These can be kept onstage by the set list to give you a nudge.
I'm also blind without my glasses
19. I'm frantically trying to learn about 6/7 songs for my first gig with my new band on Sunday night. It's quite complex stuff and having been in 4 piece bands for so long and being quite busy on the bass, I'm also having to adjust to being in a six piece band and relaxing a bit with my playing. Problem is, my memory's banjaxed. Last night, I was learning a fairly straightforward passage using the loop facility on my Tascam - I must have played it at least 30 times but when I got up this morning, it'd gone. I usually learn stuff by playing it over and over until I don't have to think about it but it's getting harder to remember stuff. I'm getting a bit concerned now and was wondering if anyone with a similar disfunctional brain has any useful tips.
20. Done a couple of deals with Chris - proper bloke
21. I love Nearly Dan - only seen 'em once many moons ago in Preston and that only came about because the guitarist's amp blew and the landlord rang me to borrow mine for the gig. The venue (Crossroads) was tiny and punters had to walk through the band to take a leak but the band did a superb performance in spite of the lack of room. Being a massive Steely Dan nut, they absolutely blew me away and I really must make the effort to see them again. Lovely people too.
22.
Well to be pernickety the change in feel depends on the nut height, relief and action, plus the change in tension across the gauges/tunings. And is the tone really better per se, or is it just more to your taste for that situation with that bass? I realise you used the reliable IMO get out clause but if the tone was consistently better a string down and five frets up, then why don't all those five string players who say they don't really use the lower notes just play 26" scale basses, tuned E-C with standard 5-string gauges? Alex
Well Alex, I'll try again shall I? The tone is more to my taste up the neck. I don't give a toss about other 5 string players and have no idea why they don't use 26" scale basses. It won't keep me awake at night. I was merely engaging in the debate and expressing my opinion to which I am entitled and will defend just as much as yours to be pernickety and an unbearable smartarse at times.
23. Happy days - unusually, I'm happy with my rig ATM
24.
Still want to try a Big One though.
You sound like my wife
