1. I'll give Jon a ring and see what he suggests, it's only minor but yeh, if I don't sort it I'll just keep gnawing away at me. I can't see it leaving his hands like that.
2. Thanks Russ, just noticed in the pic that the control plate on the Jazz doesn't cover the cavity completely. I really hope I can fix that tonight cos it'll drive me mad otherwise.
3.
As your sound is ok playing with guitar and drums, I bet your problem is the keyboard. So you can try all this negotiation about frequency ranges, or you can amputate his left arm with an axe.
At last a sensible suggestion
4. I know this won't sound helpful but I don't think it matters what you buy for your first bass cos whatever you buy, it'll help you make a more informed choice for your second. That said, you can't go far wrong with any Yammy or Fender or Ibanez or Peavey to start with. I've found that most issues or dislikes I've had with basses don't rear their heads until you've been playing them for a while but if you do find you've made an error of judgement, it's pretty easy and painless to buy and sell stuff on here so the world's your lobster.
5. Wise words
6. If anyone wants to sell their Gramma Pad - please let me know.
7. The strips look like a good option. I know I'm thick but I don't understand what this means Pedro...
... and use the amp itself at the 'plywood board' that costs another £30 odd
8. The Wizards are absolutely superb Si, I would say the bass sounds more 'solid' and less shy (?) in the mix. The output across the strings is much more even - the B string is noticeably much clearer and has more sustain. The bass still sounds very modern and hi-fi (slappers would love this bass) but the mids are better. Overall, I'm very pleased.
9. Bought an Aggie cab off Rob - nice bloke, smooth deal - buy with confidence.
10. Some good advice fellas and thanks for it... I think I'll have to wait a few weeks before telling the others to turn down / play differently most of them have been doing it for a living for a long time and as someone said, I'm just the bassist I have been boosting the mids a bit but think I have to be a bit bolder with 'em - maybe have to invest in a Gramma pad methinks.
11. Since taking up the hallowed instrument about 5 years ago, I've mostly played in 3 or 4 piece bands with just guitar and drums to contend with. I used to have no problem getting a good sound and punching through the mix but since I joined a six piece band, I'm finding it hard work. There's a loud drummer, keyboards, guitarist and violinist in my band and today at rehearsal, the guitarist, drummer and me were having a jam and I was absolutely loving my sound. Then the violinist and keyboard player arrived and when we began to rehearse, my sound was all to pot and I spent the rest of the afternoon knob twiddling. I could hear myself ok but it wasn't right to my ears - a bit undefined and lacking in punch. We play in a large room which is actually a theatre with a big hollow stage if that's any help. Anyone got any ideas how to approach getting my sound right?
12.
Nice basses Alan, that aggie rig is nice as well! I've been thinking about another 5 for a while now and saw that blue jazz on the shuker site, very nice! I think I may need to speak to John, maybe wait until Bass day Thanks for dropping the p/ups off BTW, sorry I wasn't around! Tony
No worries mate - I would love a 5 string version of that Jazz, it's the perfect bass for me.
13. We have (in the family) a copy of The Beatles Fan Club Christmas Record and a Fan Club magazine - both signed by all 4 of them but nobody is owning up to who's got it
14.
He did Steve - nice pups, I'm very pleased Awesome. Did he wind them for extra bass like mine? I'm seriously contemplating getting them put in my Shuker 6 and they'll definitely go in the other Spector NS5CR which is heading my way.
I just told him I wanted a nice Jazz bass sound - articulate and with good solid mids. Soloed, it seems to be on the button but the test will come tomorrow at rehearsal. Basses always sound completely different to me in the mix, which is why I've made so many mistakes in the past buying basses that sounded sweet soloed but were a steaming pile of bat poo playing in a live band setting.
15.
Did Andy make you a set of GEM's, Al? He did Steve - nice pups, I'm very pleased

Aguilar rigs look really classy ... and I really like the look of the blue super-Jazz Nice set-up there NGH
Thanks Clarky
I love the colour on that Jazz Alan (or should I say Gramps?). Is the Jazz fitted with the same pre, with an active/passive switch. You must come and see my Spector some time. Peter
Baby's due tomorrow Jazz has a Shuker 2 band pre with an active / passive switch I'll head North when it's all calmed down!
16. Thanks bubinga5
17. Had a very pleasant half a day over at Jon Shuker's workshop yesterday. I've replaced the pups on my Shuker 5 with a set of Wizard custom jobbies and put a preamp bypass switch on. First impressions are very good but I'll wait until after rehearsal tomorrow before I get too excited. Jon's a top bloke - I really enjoyed his company ...and the dog's. Hoping to still be in a job and have enough money to commission a fretless in 2010. Anyway, here's a pic and one of it's brother - also a Shuker. This is what I put 'em through... Happy days
18. My latest and I believe greatest...
19. I'll have the NT if you don't mind splitting 'em.
20. Steely Dan for me Pedro
21. I've done a few gigs with just one GS112 - did the job well but it wouldn't be enough for a larger room.
22.
The advantages of the interweb. This place has better info than the bass mags, and there is much better free porn out there than you'll find hiding on the top shelf of WHsmiths.
Well I never...
23. Is it me or do others find more interesting literature and illustrations on the top shelf?
24. I'll register my interest in the NT
25.
Hi Mate! I working in Wigan on tuesday, drop me a PM if you fancy meeting up for a beer monday night (travelling up overnight) - ask Mike too!
Pretty sure I can do - I'll PM you later.
