1. The JO5 is a superb bass - I'd be happy to have another. You'll love it.
2. I've owned 4 Skylines - 2 JO5s, a 55-01, a DJ4 and one USA 4-94. There is IME no comparison quality wise - don't get me wrong I love Skylines, they're workhorses, they sound and play great and they're perfect for the gigging bassist. The build quality is perceivably as good as the USA models but main difference as far as I can see is in the quality of the woods. The 4-94 literally took you're breath away whenever you opened the case - it was a work of art. Mine had a beautiful quilted sunburst top (you could feel the quilt with your fingers), stunning bird's eye maple neck and gold hardware - I had to sell it because I was scared to use it. It was also a lot lighter than any Skyline I owned. Are they worth the extra mahoney? I don't think so.
3. Largo - did you build yours? I'm thinking of having a go myself this weekend.
4. Lovely basses Pedro, it's interesting how you've paired them up for the pics. I'll be up soon for a dabble
5. +1 for sonic blue with an aged /mint pickguard. Aged white with a torty pickguard hits the spot too.
6. Easy - Epifani UL310 .
7.
Peter, that American Vintage Precision has my name on it, you know that...?!
I think we'll have to form an orderly queue for that P Rich Lovely collection BTW
8. When I played guitar in a rock band, we did a biker's rally near Bradford. We'd just come off and were standing to the side of the stage chatting. There was a couple slow dancing near the stage and I looked across nervously to them when the guy strumbled backwards over the 2ft high stage and knocked over the other guitarist's Les Paul Premium Plus which fell over knocking his SG, which fell over knocking his Jackson (USA). Nearly 5 grand's worth of guitars got damaged (but none of them seriously). Next thing, the other guitarist (second dan black belt - Shotokan / short fuse) flies over to confront (erm..kill) this large hairy biker. I had visions of a riot starting with 300 bikers in the hall so I jumped in between 'em and did my best scouse calm down calm down bit and luckily it worked. Could have been nasty that one. It kicked off a few times at gigs when I was with the soul band but luckily we never got involved.
9. The man's a **** Pedro - bloody guitarists. I remember when I was in my last 'guitar' band, I drove home from Bristol one night to Preston for a rehearsal cos we had an important gig the following Saturday. We had 20 mins rehearsal at the most and then ran through Comfortably Dumb and he couldn't get 'his Comfy sound' so the remainder of the night was spent tweaking his Boss ME8. The band didn't play another note and after an hour and a half, we gave up and just left him to it. I had to leave at 5.30 in the morning to make it back to Bristol in time - I should have just stayed in the 4 star hotel there and got pi55ed
10. I always feel better after a long soak in a hot bath - preferably a Tourettes bath (so hot you scream expletives on entry). Failing that, an opera bath (not as hot but makes you scream like the fat lady on entry) and if you're a wuss, a monkey bath...(sceams ooh ooh ohh on entry). Bath hierarchy - there ya go.
11. Shame your so far away fella, you could have tried mine before ordering. It's got the Delano pups / 2 band EQ with a passive switch. It's the best Jazz I've owned and I've had a few. pic here
12. That's a good price - where do you live? I'm guessing it's not the UK??
13. I would happily park my arse on that seat - lovely lovely bass. Howzit sound? Bet it's thunderous ...er like my arse
14. I love that bass Neil
15. I do like flats but I'd say rounds Clarky. Last night I changed the strings on my Shuker Jazz - it had some old Elixirs on that'd got quite hairy but TBH, didn't sound too bad. Anyway, I replaced 'em with my first choice strings - DR Sunbeams and wow, I was in Jazz tone heaven - it really opened up the bass and the highs were really sparkly with well defined lows.
16. I've owned a 55-01, 2 JO5s (one was previously OBBM's), a DJ4, a DD and 4-94. All fantastic basses. The 55-01 I had is the 5 string version of the one you're looking at and I have to say, you'd struggle to find a better sounding, more versatile bass at that price IMHO. Nothing to lose.
17. They have better mids and sound more 'solid' in the mix. The highs are crisper and the lows more defined - the B string has improved tremendously, it's a lot clearer and has much more sustain. The best part about it - apart from the price is you can call Andy and tell him exactly what sound you're looking for and he'll have them to you in a matter of days. Top bloke, fantastic service, highly recommended.
18. I've just replaced my Nordstrand Dual Coils with some custom soap bars from Wizard - big improvement and half the price.
19. Bergies are truly outstanding cabs and I'd go back to them without hesitation. You can pick up two GS112s for about £425 ish and I can't think of anything better to buy at that sort of price. You can easily do a small - medium gig with one cab too.
20. Hi Pete, MB heads do sound great with Aggie GSs or DBs. I can also recommend the Genz Benz 212 neo cab - 600 watts, 4 ohms , very light and has castors but it's quite big and bulky. Lovely sound. I'm really chuffed with my current rig - Aguilar AG500 + 2 GS112's. Just a tad mid scooped but an easy tweak on the EQ. Having 2 channels - one with valve like distortion is a bonus.
21. I dunno if this'll help, my Shuker has a smallish body with bolt on maple neck / board and Jon's 3 band EQ - just be aware that combination has resulted in a very bright (but not unpleasantly so) sounding bass. If that's what you're after, proceed with confidence. His preamp is very powerful so you can dial in a wide range of sounds.
22. I will in time Chris -I'm not backward when it comes to going forward and don't pull my punches. It's just a question of timing I guess.
23. Yeh, the synth has a lot to do with it TBH but being the newbie, and given that he is a seasoned professional I don't feel inclined to say anything to him just yet...
24. Thanks Nik - it plays and sounds as good as it looks
