1. So, I've been offered to assist gospel choir, and the thing is.. that I know practically nothing about gospel, don't count those Youtube videos with all that bassy mumbling - nice, fast & flashy basslines and so on I mean, I've tried to do those excercises, taken from Tommy Brown and other famous gospel bassists, but it seemed pointless, when it actually comes to how gospel bassline should be created, how it should act with drums, and stuff.. I mean, are there any decent videos, methods/schools, where people talk about gospel basslines and their conjunction with drums, and so on? To add more, what would be good gospel tunes to start from, any bassists worth checking out? (I'm afraid GospelChops and Janek Gwizdala won't work here.. ) Mind you, I'm not a beginner, so, fast or a bit more techy lines aren't the problem, but, the thing, I'm going for, is understanding of bassline in gospel.. Share your thoughts, Faith
2. The start was nice, but, all in all, it left me cold, got to admit.. I've enjoyed him 10 times more, when he played with Incognito.. Maybe it's just me, eh
3. If I'm correct, you were about 'replacing' your 4x10 with two 2x10's? If so, the 'replacement' won't sound you the same...
4. now that's clear, thanks for that, EssentialTension anyway, I'd be interested to hear opinion of the man, who's played, for eg., both 4/94 and 44-01 or anything like that - how the quality difference actually feels on those two basses. Anyone?
5. That's the thing I've never got about Lakland.. Do American and Skyline series differ so much, in terms of quality, playability, etc..? I'm talking about models like 4-94(american) or 44-01(skyline) and such....
6. Maybe I didn't get somethin', but, in fact, there are chapters that cover arpeggios and scales in that book.. ('building walking lines') XB26354, I know, what you mean, but, maybe I wasn't clear enough - I was trying to say, that knowing of scales and arpeggios itself won't help you to create an interesting bassline. But, an understanding (knowing) of chord/scale/arpeggio is crucial, no doubt here, mate Faith.
7. I've got into jazz not that long ago, and, the thing, that helped me most, to be honest, was Ed Friedland's - Building Walking Basslines' - it starts from basic things, gets into the typical F/Bb jazz blues, talks a lot about different types of approach notes (which, I think, is one of the most important things to make the walking bassline sound interesting), and only at the end of 'tuition' you get to play Rhythm Changes. Of course, it's important to know chords, arpeggios, and scales, but it won't help you to create an interesting bassline, in my opinion. And, in fact, sometimes it's ok to use only root and fifth, and some approching to those two notes - and you'll get superb phrase/line. Faith
8. Two different basses? I wouldn't have never thought.. Well, that's probably another proof, how serious stuff is back there.. On Abbey Road sessions Paul was playing P Bass, and P was with flats, if I'm correct. I swear, I read somewhere about Paul's gear a while ago..
9. Nice, I'm playing this at the moment, but I just wasn't sure (or too lazy to check..) if bar 12 is correct.. I mean, the last note, E, in that bar, definetly sounds like Eb (becoming a passing note to Dm chord..) rather than E, actually.. Am I right?
10. So, I'm looking for a decent book with some advices for improvising, and, just wanted to ask, if anyone's tried Ed's book 'Bass Improvisation', folks?.. I would buy it straight away off the Amazon without much thinking, but, then again, when it comes to Ed's books, I get a strange feeling about it, i mean, some books, like 'Building Walking Basslines', are just wonderful - very clear & informative and stuff.., but, some other ones, especially those, 'supported-published(?)' by Hal Leonard, are, IMHO, complete crap (sorta 'fast food', if you know, what I mean..) .. so, it'd be nice, if anyone would give a word about it.. In the other words, if it's anything similar like 'Building Walking Basslines', I'd be happy.. Waiting for you thoughts, Faith.
11. Well, VII diminished chords cannot 'happen' in natural minor, it'd have to be a harmonic minor, I believe, yep..
12. I have one, and, although I'm using it rarely now (due to rig's size and being put in studio in another city.. blah blah), I can't say, that their quality is high, i mean, such thing, as knobs, like falling out, and stuff.. I haven't compared it to other heads, but, on the whole, it's not bad, in the end, there's EQ, so you can dial lotta tones, and stuff.. Mounted-in compressor is rubbish, only useful for dialing a bit more power-'oooomph' into the sound.. It won't help much, but anyway.. Faith.
13. So, as I am in quite serious trouble, when it comes to improvisation/soloing, I've been looking for some books to buy, that covers it.. I was amazed by Ed Friedland's "Building walking bass lines', really clear, in-depth and informative stuff there, so, I thought, his Bass Improvisation book would be somethin' similar, but, as it is published(?) by Hal Leonard, I fear that it will be sort of a 'fast food', as his other books, published by Leonard, are,( in my opinion, of course..), if you know what I mean.. All in all, I don't know, where to look for informative books, that have fundamentals of soloing in pop music (jazz-based books don't interest me in this case..) Any suggestions here? Faith.
14. He's a monster player - I've posted some vids of him a while ago, sadly, hardly anyone was interested.. He has his own album, you can check a few songs on Tube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KR36I1nuxdM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0UTVwpzYKOI BTW, Nosso Trio (band, where N.Conceicao plays in) were invited into Kaunas Jazz Festival this year (the biggest jazz fest in Lithuania), and one night Ney attended jam session - he was 'baseless' - and I was just preparing to go on stage - guess who's bass he was playing later that night
15. Well. I was actually playing a wedding, but, the place you've mentioned doesn't sound familiar - I've been somewhere in the middle of forests in Vilnius region, Lithuania it is
16.
there are two types of reading; basic reading and sight reading.
Agree with Bilbo all the way.. In this case, I'm somewhere in between - I can't yet properly play a tune on the spot, but, well, um, understanding, what's written - no problem..
17. Look for some speed-tech pdf. school in Steve's Digorgio's web.. Hey, but those chaps, from Dimmu Borgir for eg., are sooo funny to watch to, aren't they.. /m\
18. I don't think, you should 'feel' guilty in any way - you've contacted both the Guitarist and the Church, but you got silence. Furthermore, as you've mentioned, Church upgraded it's equipment, so they don't actually need that ol' Ibby (which I clearly understand). I'd say - enjoy da bass, mate! Faith.
19.
I also have a Laney 30w amp which my wife found for me at a car boot sale. She managed to haggle the price down to £6 All it needed was a clean and it sounds pretty good as well, perfect for when anyone comes round for lessons or a jam.
Matey, 6 quid - that's a steal! I've paid about 80 quid for the damn thing.. I'm calling the police
20. I don't actually see, why you should spend 400 quid on a practice amp.. As others have mentioned before, a decent sounding small amp goes for about 100 quid or so. You've also stated, that you got kids, so, you can't go loud - I don't think, there's any need for you to go for somethin' bigger and more expensive than 30w amp or so, unless you're after a very boutique box! And, if you're so 'dedicated' to spend your money, there are always nice thingies, that could 'improve' your practice - like loopers, drum machines and stuff - a musthave for every bassist, IMO Anyway, it's yours money, not mine Cheers! Faith.
21. Shallers. Quite expensive, but I am now dissapointed with them. Or one of them, to be clear. It seems to 'loosen', and, when I'm putting my bass on a stand, strap just goes off. And I've been using them for only a year..
22.
By the way, has anyone heard 'D'Angelo's album, which I think is called Voodoo (forgive me if I'm wrong), with Pino on bass. He has this style where the instruments are so far behind the beat, it actually sounds out of time. This has pi**sed off quite a few people, as it did me on certain tracks. Any opinions on this?

????????
What's so " ?????? " about this, mate?
23. Today, AER Amp One was brought in our local shop - I gave it a quick blast with MusicMan SR5 (shop's bass..), both set flat - man, that amp has some balls! From the looks - little, but sooo 'meaty' and punchy - lots of power. I couldn't believe that such a small box could have 200 watts. Sounds clear, but, altogether, very deep. I haven't tried it properly with my own bass, but, now I got some GAS, pickin' on me!..

25.
No, he gets respect for making brilliant 4,5 and 6 string basses.
It must have been some internet shop, that I've got that feeling about 'no K.Smith 4stringers' from, as I haven't spotted a single one.. Anyway, all Smiths I've seen were at least 5ies.
