1. Ok, so I'm digging a bit into latino stuff, particularly tumbao feel.. I'm working on Oscar Stagnaro's stuff, who seems to be a monster latino player, but, I need more.. I don't know any recordings of latino stuff with tumbao bass movement except some Nosso Trio stuff.. Could anyone give me some recomendations on artists/albums I should check? I want to listen to tumbao as much as I can to get THAT feel. It's sad I wasn't born in South America.. Faith
2.
Here's one I made earlier (todat!) A little groove based jam on my lovely Sei Jazz, bass went direct into Logic and has a tiny bit EQ/compression but it sounds great straight in... Mike
That was nice, Mike.. Although, I could tell a few timing issues at the beginning.. Anyway, I dig your clips far more than most others I met here so far.. Cheers mate Faith
3.
If there was a sub forum with transcription and tabs then there's a chance the RIAA/PRS would try and shut the site down. All for the sake of someone just not reading a thread that normally if not always is clearly stated in the thread title. Kinda selfish IMHO.
Wtf is RIAA and PRS?
4. It p1sses me off also.. I find this section one of the most interesting ones, but those 'tab ones' just put me down.. Can't we sort anything for those tab-lovers?
5. I don't dig the comparison of Fodera and Sadowsky - yep, they're both based in NYC - that's probably the only similarity.. Sadowsky is pretty much all Fender-based, whereas Fodera has quite unique and non-traditional design style and sound. I love the looks of Foderas, but I can't get with their sound yet. But, then again, all I've heard yet was Matthew Garrison (soulless sound, but that's maybe because his music to me seems so soulless..) and Janek Gwizdala - his sound was pretty lovely sometimes..
6. I don't get a point, what you're trying to say.. Wattabout bass, it all comes to personal taste - yep, there maybe were better looking Prestiges out there (mine, for example.. ), but, from the playing and quality view - it's a cracking bass.
7. Hey hey hey, want to hear some EUB blues? This is one of the very first attempts to play blues on my EUB.. Hey, and save your tomatoes & eggs - I know that it's fluffy, out-of-tune maybe, but, I've tried my best.. Any comments are welcome. regards, Faith PS I hope Bilbo doesn't mind my lil' intervention into his thread..
8.
No charts from me, but the bass plays on up-beat on the 4th crotchet and then instead of hitting the 1 in the next bar brings it forward to play it on the last quaver of the bar before. Effectively playing the two quavers in the 4th beat of the up-beat and tying the 2nd quaver to the begining of the next bar. It sounds odd because the bass on its own has no actual "1" playing so you automatically presume it is actually being played on the "1". The real crime is that she sings and plays at the same time. It's not right.
I'll analyze it tomorrow, thanks a lot, mate.. Got some fever tonight, damnit And, yep, she's a killer musician.
9. So, a girl-singer from academy wants to do it for some jazz competition.. here it's on Tube: I gave it a listen, first impression -nothing fancy, but, in the intro.. I don't get, on which beat bass groove starts on (beginning of the song).. And, it seems that there are some odd meters (I'm not sure) - could somebody comment a bit on all this? Also, I don't know yet, if chaps in my band have functions/chord sheets, anyway, could somebody help me with chords, Bilbo, anyone? I'd like to work out bass part, and it would be 10 times easier with chords.. I believe I wouldn't find them in chordie.com.. I'm sorry for all these 'demands', but they now want me to rehearse the song on Saturday, so, I'm under stress a bit.. Regards, Faith.
10. I get that, Rob. What's really bad for me, is when there comes, erhmm, real 8th /16th notes, if you know, what I'm saying..
11.
It really depends on what I'm transcribing and what other things need to be practiced. Normally I'd spend about an hour a day on transcription, which works out at about a quarter of my total practice time. At the moment I'm having a bunch of problems with the tendons in my left arm so I can't really do much practice, which means I'm spending more like 2 or 3 hours a day transcribing. On the original subject of the thread, currently transcribing: Herbie Hancock - Maiden Voyage (tenor solo done, working on Freddie Hubbard's trumpet solo) Tool - Various bits and pieces (The Pot, Vicarious, Forty Six & 2)
Hope, you'll sort it.. I'm also spending not more than an hour a day, but, what gets in my way, is finding a proper material to transcribe.. I thought, it'd be best to start at some plain blues solos, but, all that swing movement, it's just pain in the arse at the beginning to write it properly .. Do you rememember any of your first solos/themes, that you transcribed?
12. How much practice time do you dedicate to transcription process in your everyday routine?
13. I was looking into Smiths.. But, even being secondhand, they're still quite expensive.. If I'd dive into ~2000eu bass, I'd really want to try it, before buy..
14.
Noooooooooooooooooo! Not everything clever is "Wooten'oesque". This guy's got real expression - of his own.
If I haven't seen the video, only heard audio, I'd have definetly said, it's Victor. I doubt, if I'd be the only one.. The same can be said about Jazzmunki's last video, flowing 3-finger groove - it's defo influenced by Victor. If it sounds like that, then it sounds so, right..
15.
After playing a 6-string for many years I came to this conclusion: buy a guitar. If you have a 6-string you will spend large parts of your bass playing life reaching over that C-string to get to the bass notes. It's just a major PITA and most of those parts you are transcribing will sound better at pitch than an octave lower on a bass. Then there is the extra weight, neck dive etc. It's just not worth it imho. I get much more fun playing keyboards or guitar.
Am I missing something here?
16.
There's a Hohner B Bass VI if you want close string spacing - I have a V - but in the long term you'll want to change the pickups & electronics. G.
My tutor has a sixer.. Ok sounding, but I want something with Jazz pups..
What about the Ibanez BTB? They are a bit chunkier than the Soundgears, but are nice instruments. I've had a 6 for a few years now.
I just can't get on with BTB looks.. If I'll go for a 'replica' Ibby, it'll be SR..
17. So, wattabout those Status'es? How much does that Status Energy go for, approximately? As far as Youtube goes, I liked, how they sound, esp with Jazz pups..
18. I'm not much into these SR's, somehow.. I might look into Status, but I don't have a single idea, how do they feel and sound.. And it's impossible to try one, as there is none in our Baltic area, I believe.. OTPJ, any chance, they make Status witht Jazz pups?
19. I know those, but, if I'm correct, their string spacing is 19mm.. Way too much for me..
20. So, for the moment, I've got my beloved 2004 made Ibby Soundgear Prestige 5er, Custom Bartolini Pups, all that stuff.. It's a really nice bass, slim neck, low action, and it plays like butter.. But, as I'm more and more into transribing (horns, guitars - they're all so damn high! ) and into enconomy of motion, I felt a need for a C string.. You'd say, ok, change the tuning to E-C and let it go.. I was thinking about, and, I've even got my fretless Ibby strung like that, but it doesn't work like that here,as I need a low B for a lot stuff I'm playing in bands.. I'm likely to sell my Prestige Ibby, or to swap it for a decent 6 string, but, I don't know, if I want to try some other bass, other pickup combination, or I just want a 6-string replica of my beloved old one.. For a ~1000 euros, where should I look at it? No ideas? There's other option - to stretch for it 'a bit', and- I sell my Ashdown rig, and get additional ~700-800 euros, we get 1700-1800 then.. I'm about to try Jazz pickups, and, what I clearly want, is quite slim neck, low string spacing, rosewood board.. That bass should be an all-around one - versalite, flexible in terms of sound; not too heavy (got some back problems..) Any thoughts on this? Cheers Faith
21. Yep, no problem with that, but, as I've mentioned before, Friedland's book covers the very basics, and, you can use audio samples for playing over and over again, till you get it.. More helpful, I'd say, than Youtube stuff..
22. Erm, after signing, you should be able to download it via the Jerzy's webpage.. All that newsletter stuff was written while ago, now, the book is published.. It was messy for also, when I wanted to get it..
23. If you're a new cat into walking bass, it's ESSENTIAL to get a copy of Ed Friedland's - Building Walking Basslines. Clear, informative, demanding, interesting. Starts at very basic things, and then dips into messy ones. It's made from printed (pdf) version + audio [recorded audio track for each exercise]. been working on this for over a half-year myself.. Works for me. Great stuff. Hey, and don't forget to try each line in the book in at least 6 keys (F, Bb, Eb, Ab, C, G - most common keys in jazz!) If you're having trouble finding this book, give me PM, we'll sort something.. Good luck with this, Faith.
24.
Last time I was talking to Janek he was telling me about the current pop tour he's doing where he is the MD,and that on order of the artists management,he was not allowed to audition anyone over the age of 25.
Well, age issues are well known in all that pop/RnB scene. If I understand correctly, age there has a lot of to do with your looks. I also remember Janek saying, that, if you hook up with the right crowd of people in that scene, you can tour all that RnB thing, as long as you look young n good. Outdated ones just go away
25.
Apparently the musician's union are trying to force people who mime to have that on tickets and adverts so people know what they are getting. Surely if the gaga gig is mimed then they could just have got a hold of a few pretty boys (or girls) to mime instead of actual musicians - Why didn't they just get the girls from the Robert Palmer video? I don't see the point of hiring real musicians to mime - even if there was a dvd at the end of it, most producers cannot line up what a mucisian is playing to what you can hear so they could be pretending to play anything.
+1 for that. And, to add, It's sad for me, (if it's true, what the man in post said..) that even NYC cats are going for such a crap (music-wise) gig.. But that's just another proof of J Gwizdala's words, that, in NYC, it's not the music, that is major factor (though, it always was), but it's money, that's is becoming a such thing.. Sad, once more..
