1. Does anybody know, if Richard Bona strings his fretless 4string Pensa with flats or nylons? I'm gobsmacked by that bass sound..
2. Yep, I do loosen strings, when I want to adjust truss rod. But I haven't actually tried first loosening truss rod, before tightening it i'll try it.
3. So, I wanted to adjust my Ibanez GSR205's neck, and it seems that truss rod doesn't want to be tightened anymore- and there's still quite a lot of room to tighten the neck.. A guy in music store told me, that bass' neck could be too dry to adjust it. He also said, that there are some sort of humidifiers (normally used for acoustic guitars, not letting them to dry out), that could a bit of help to me. Anyone could give an advice, what should I do in this case? Thanks, Faith.
4.
You've got to wonder - after the active preamp in the bass, the Avalon and the Redthing DI..what is the Aguilar contributing?
Monitoring, anyone?
5. WTF, Paul Turner played fiver? He said, he prefers 4ers, because he can't cope with how B string sounds (too much different from E)..
6. I'm thinking about, what strings should I put on my new fretless bass. For clarity, that 'fretless' bass, that I'll be putting strings on to, is a 'convert' - luthier will rip out frets, and cover (rosewood) fingerboard with epoxy. I know, that it's very popular to put flats on fretless, due to it's sound and playability, but, I've spotted, my tutor has nylon strings on his fretless, and it played and sounded very nice, so I thought, i would ask...: What are the differences (and maybe, similarities,eh?) between flats and nylon strings? I know, how flats feel, as I have them put on my EUB, but thats all I know.. Faith
7. Oh, mate, there were a few large threads about this, just do a bit of search thing.. And, wattabout reading skill, I wouldn't even dare to call it a 'bonus', or 'a useful thing' - I think, it's essential for every session guy.
8. That was interesting, Doddy, thanks a lot Anyone else, Jake, Major-Minor? To be honest, I'm especially interested in our pro musos' opinions on using metronome, that's why I'm calling these names.. But, of course, if anyone else has anything to share about this, please, feel free Oscar, I hope, we're not going OT, mate..
9. I have a practising list, I take ~4hours of 'must to do' practice everyday - scales, improvisation/reading, blues/changes studies, technique, EUB, and piano. Harmony, transcribing tunes - if I have any more time and dedication, I spend more time on this. The thing that bothers me at the moment, is using metronome at practice - how to set it, when learning scales, or when reading, learning technique and stuff.. Anyone could share their knowledge on this, Jake, Doddy, Major-Minor? I'd be so grateful.
10. I've also started playing EUB a week or so ago, so, we'll see how it happens.. Have fun with it, Bilbo! Hey, and, anyone minds, if I post a lil' recording of a scale in this section, just to give some feedback on my intonation and stuff?
11. Just back from a our local "Kaunas Jazz' festival, winter concert.. It was Lenny Andrade, gorgeus jazz singer, together with her band "Banda Sambop" from Brazil. Guess, who was on bass? Yes, you're right, it was the man himself, Ney Conceicao Tonight he was playing a Jazz Bass, Fender probably, Sunburst, rosewood fingerboard. He sounded ace, was smiling all the time, and made it look everything sooo easy.. ... and, I have to confess, after this gig, I'm GAS'ing for a Jazz myself.. Wattaabout the concert, music itself was great, brilliant musicians, beautiful singing from Lenny, I've 'pumped' by that for a few weeks The whole sound was not that good, reverbation was huge, as the gig was in National Philharmonic - probably only classical music sounds good in that venue (oh, how I hate it..) anyway, music done it's job, and I'm really satisfied with it and especially Ney's playing.. Just wanted to share, Faith.
12. Craig, look, that's easy for example, here's your first link, ok - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93IE1WgvtuM Copy the bold part (that, which goes after this "=" sign), and put into brackets between [yootoob] [/youtoob] (just spell Youtube correctly, ok!).. It would look something like this, in your case: [yootub]93IE1WgvtuM[/youtooob] Got it, mate? Faith
13. It was a bit wierdo thing (you don't get to see it much everyday, right?), but, I have to say, I enjoyed it. 'Even' some sort of 'bass-bash' needs creativity - I believe, that maybe a few of us here could transform it into some sort of music piece (as Vic just did, IMO).. An, one observation here - it seems that some people here treat 'Vic bashing' thing like a competition, and looks for a even 'more clever' way to to show their opinion, each time they spot a thread about him... It just looks lame, doesn't it?
14. I'd make a setup and (I know that's not an option, but maybe?) spend the rest on lesson from a good tutor? Just an idea. Faith
15.
Wasn't there a youtube link in an older thread where Nathan East (or possibly some other well known bassist but I think it was him) was running through what the EQ did on his signature amps? do a search on youtube and you'll probably find it. It looked fairly well explained.
Marcus Miller, I believe.
16. Another one, this time - Jamiroquai tune, don't miss it enjoy, Faith
17.
Hmmm... Yes, every electric bass player should learn to play upright.
Why? Honestly. I have an EUB standing in my room, and, I am after of a bit 'push', in terms of learning it.
18. Hey, mate After seeing this, what first came to mind, was, you could easily dep for Flea from RHCP, if needed Faith
19.
Just edited your post for you ped

...And nice clip..
Cheers for those two, mate faith
20. Another one, aaaand, again, jazzy one.. A littl' walk over jazz blues changes, in swing and bossa styles. Enjoy P.S. How da hell, do you, guys, make those Youtube videos appear 'on the screen' here on the page, for example, Budget_bassist's clip, if you know, what I'm saying..?
21.
Unless you're really attached to the Ibby, I would just sell it and buy a fretless!
That's also an option There's a variant, to buy fretless Harley Benton, buuut, it's drawback (for me) is that it is not lined. here it is: http://www.thomann.de/gb/prod_bdb_AR_163614.html?image=1 So, big question here, guys - is it possible/hard to make it lined? Faithless
22. That was nice, Tom, thanks for that
23. And, anyway, if don't know any, maybe any of you, transcribers, could share, how did you actually started transcribing?
24. So, I'm about to dig into transcribing music (into notation), and, hmmm, not to forget, I'm quite familiar with notation/reading lines, and I've already started transcribing music, but.. But I just wanted to ask, if there's any structured material, that teaches, how to properly do it, I mean, how to listen to it and write it on?.. if you know what I'm sayin'.. Faith
25. So, for the first time in my life, I had a chance to see one of the most innovative today's players, Hadrien Feraud, live. It was Billy Cobham's band, that this year played in Lithuanian jazz festival "Mama Jazz", as headliners. There were other great bands, like Rosario Giuliani Quintet from Italy, with Darryl Hall on double bass, and such.. But when I've seen Hadrien's name in festival's advert, I was gobsmacked.. Yes, I've seen Victor Wooten live, but his 'own' stuff with his band didn't make me any sense, and, stilistically, he's, IMO, far away from Jaco, whom I love.. So, it was a chance to see Jaco's 'successor' (don't get me wrong..) for real. And the experience actually was very good - at the gig's day, in the morning, I came to Billy's masterclass, hoping to see his band and Hadrien, and I wasn't wrong - all band was in the place! Moreover, it wasn't actual masterclass, it was more like a rehearsal (there's one interesting bit in that - Hadrien rehearsed with band only that morning, and a bit more in the hotel before the gig! He himself said, that it was very hard gig, as it was his first gig with Billy, but he done rather well, if'd we would look at those weird time signatures and unison lines he had to remember..) Gig itself was fascinating, I've been watching Hadrien 90% of the time, got to admit, I was once again blown away by his solos, 'flavoured' with some wah-wah, aaaand by his technique. Astouding stuff. Oh, not to forget, he was using his new Ken Smith Hadrien Feraud 5 string (strung B to G, which was quite strange to me.. ) signature - cracking sounding bass! aand, a few pedals - volume, wah-wah, some MXR pedal (maybe compressor), some EQ pedal - I actually haven't looked closely.. We had a little nice chat after, I was wondering, if's he really down-to earth chap, and he really was! We talked a bit about the gig, technique, Jaco, his new album, I've also got his signature, on top of Billy's, here it is: Awfully big experience for me, and I think, for the first time in my life, I've got a musician to follow to.. at last Just wanted to share, Faith.
