1. I'll check this thread each half-hour Childish comments about Vic do the trick for me
2. Fabulous stuff, got to say, if it's worth saying again..
3. Thanks, mate, that's very helpful I'm not sure, if I'll find such light nylon G string, so, I'm thinking of asking Newtone or whatever to make a custom nylon C for me. Any chance, somebody could tell approximate cost of this? BTW, I've google'd other nylon strings, and found this..: http://www.uptonbass.com/Thomastik-Infeld-Acousticore-AB346/ But, I'm not sure, if these strings are ok for magnetic pickups. Anyone?
4. yep, Doddy, I know what you mean, that's exactly, what I am after actually, but I didn't want to make it too complicated, when wrote this thread..
5. What makes me curious, is why some people think, that they can't sing. Everyone can. But singing needs practice.
6. So, a lot of musicians around us, even Victor Wooten and such chaps, accent this thing - sing, what you play (when practicing/gigging/soloing, whatever..). I was interested, in, how many of us, BCers, do actually do so - sing, when playing. Hey, I'm not talking about singing 'Yesterday' on the top when playing bass-part... I'm actually talking about singing to what you're actually playing, cool? I'm trying to do singing on everything I do - playing a scale, a solo and such. The man, that 'forced' me to do so, was Richard Bona - his singing along to playing is a wonderful thing to me. Oh, over some time, I've found a few interesting things, that I wanted to ask about, but, first of all, confess, if you sing Cheers, Faith
7. (Found this by searching of threads about ramps..) I've seen his signature live, even got a photo on my phone, but, it's rubbish (the photo, i mean) - outstanding looking, and, even more, sounding bass! Hadrien is also a very nice chap, and I don't really understand, how some people slag him off, when they don't even know him well. And, Pete, what's wrong with Janek Gwizdala? He's not my biggest influence, but, he's a very dedicated and talented musician.. Just curious.
8.
stringing E to C without tension on the truss rod...the neck should be happy then start afresh with the tension
erm... Couldn't clearly get your mind.. Could you explain a bit more? And, yep, my fretless is lined - absolute beauty, I'll give some pics later on, you'll see But, I'm in doubt about the 'G string as C' thing.. There's some more tension, but I doubt if it's too much... Is there a big chance, that I could break my bass neck, guys?
9. Eh, you must be right there.. I've got flats put on my EUB..
10. I was thinking of taking flatwound C string and put some sort of nylon coating on it, as I would like it sound as much similar as other 4 (nylon) strings.. Any possibilities here? I'm not much of craftsman, mind you..
11.
Greetings, Had a look on EBay & all that came up were these which are 1) for a low B, and 2) very expensive. I'd caution against using a G string as a subsitute high C - I tried it on an Aria "Magna" 5-string & the neck didn't like it one bit, thankfully the twist went away when I put it back to normal tuning. All I can suggest is to get a high-C set of roundwounds (or a 6-string set) & crack on with it. You will get "tramlining", but that's just part of the process - after all frets wear down too, don't they? Pete.
What's wrong with substitution? I thought, I'd be bad, if I tried using G as a substitute for D, for example (4th lower, i mean), as its well, too thin string, but, now, I'd use 0.60mm string for C.. And, how did your neck actually react? BTW, I won't put rounds on fretless, as I wouldn't like to 'wear' fretboard, also, I could get a 6string set of flats, but, flats are flats.. Hey, what if I'd use a flatwound C string, would her sound differ so much from nylon one?
12. Oh, I'm almost finished with my fretless - collected it yesterday from luthier - he seemed to do 'ok' with neck - made fretlines, adjusted it a bit, and fixed sharp 'dots' on fretboard and neck. Today I've put a regular 4string black nylons set on it, but, I don't have a C string yet.. It's a shame, cuz bass now looks sooo beauty, and I want to play it Sadly, I don't have an idea, where to get a damn string, except buying a whole new set of nylons, and put so called G string (0.50 diameter) into C string's 'place'.. Any suggestions? I've tried classical guitar's strings - they're too short for bass, violin strings also doesn't seem to be an option.. I'm lost, guys, help me
13. Ibanez BK - the cheapie one.. Well, there's something to do with the neck itself - it has some sort of injury, where it connects with the body. In other words, neck looks like an S letter, or, more like a roller-coaster - one 'normal' bow in about the middle of the neck, then we go 'up', aaand, there's another little bow, about that place, where neck connects with body, as I've said.. But, anyway, it has little to do with truss rod..
14. So, as luthier told me, it seems that my bass truss rod has an injury, that actually came from factory - it's due to bad construction of neck and stuff... There's still quite a bow in the neck, but you can hardly tighten truss rod anymore, if you don't want to break it.. Shame, bass is fretless now, as I was dreaming of just a bit of neck relief and very low action..
15. Anyone,chaps?..
I've finally gave my Ibby to luthier.. It seems, that it's neck has a 'injury', that probably came from factory (well, at last, it already was, when I bought it from shop..), but he'll try to fix it. If no, we'll probably put a new neck. Anyway, today I was in the shop, looking for nylon strings. They were there, but I've faced a problem. As I've mentioned before, I want to string my Ibby from E to C. Both string sets, that were available in shop, were either 4-string set (E-G), or 5-string (B-G), so, at the moment, I have an 'ordinary' 4string set, and don't even have an idea, where to get nylon C string... Any ideas, how could I solve this? Just to mind you, I'm living in Lithuania, so, I can't order a 'custom' string from Newtone, or whatever like that Or, maybe, I should 'coat' a flatwound string with nylon?
16. Anyone saw Victor Wooten's one note (F) solo on 12-bar blues in his last DVD, Groove Workshop? That's just.. right.

18. Hey, guys, I'm giving my Ibby to luthier tommorow, most probably! I was just curious about fretless bass setup - how do you do yours? I mean, there's a great Jerzy Drozd's set-up guide here, on Basschat, but, he concentrates on fretted basses, so it won't be much of a help to me.. Share your thoughts on fretless setups, chaps! Cheers, Faith.
19. His playing was widely discussed on TB not long ago.. He didn't get much 'encouragement' there, nor he got from me. A lot of notes, but I couldn't even hear him properly..
20. My both 5string Ibbies have 16.5mm spacing (yep, I tend to keep my basses spacing the same..), and I don't find it hard to do a proper slap (in terms of sound clarity, and such - actually I'm not much of a slapper). Of course it takes practice, but, at the end, what doesn't take practice, eh? Actually, I think, it's waaay easier to slap a four string, rather than 5string (B-G tuning), in terms of sound clarity. Problem (for me, as I feel it), when slapping a fiver, would be to properly record it. In a live situation, 'outside' sounds are waay less noticeable. I've just watched Gouche video - and somehow, if you'd record his solo track, I don't think, that his slapping would be crystal clear.. I believe, it's very hard to properly mute 6string.
21. Ah, I'll better ask it in the same thread.. So, is it 'a must' to cover fingerboard with epoxy if I'll be putting nylon strings on it? As I know, epoxy is needed, if you're using rounds, which dig into fingerboard.. Aaaand, other question is about the nut.. At the moment, my bass is strung from B to G, but I'm planning to change it's tuning to E-C, so is it also 'a must' to change the nut? I've seen a guys changing their tunings like that and not messing with nuts - and they said they hadn't a single problem with it!.. So, what could I expect? Yours sincerely, Faith
22.
Does anybody know, if Richard Bona strings his fretless 4string Pensa with flats or nylons? I'm gobsmacked by that bass sound..
Anyone? I meant this bass, in this video:

24. Yep, I do loosen strings, when I want to adjust truss rod. But I haven't actually tried first loosening truss rod, before tightening it i'll try it.
25. So, I wanted to adjust my Ibanez GSR205's neck, and it seems that truss rod doesn't want to be tightened anymore- and there's still quite a lot of room to tighten the neck.. A guy in music store told me, that bass' neck could be too dry to adjust it. He also said, that there are some sort of humidifiers (normally used for acoustic guitars, not letting them to dry out), that could a bit of help to me. Anyone could give an advice, what should I do in this case? Thanks, Faith.
