1. Whooops, I made a few technical cockups, they're now sorted, fixed transcription is now uploaded.. Sorry, chaps. For those, who already have it, please, delete one of those three repetetive bars, beginning at bar 30 - there's one too many.. Just don't touch that empty 2/4 meter bar - it's all ok!
2. Hey, chaps, I've just finished re-writing my transcription of J5's into Finale, and, here it is: This is my very first attempt of transcribing straight 16ths funky rhythms, but, the whole thing went quite well.. If you have any comments, suggestions, positive critics on this, you are welcome I'll post video of myself playing this tommorow. oh, and here's the original song on Tube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4vqUyYFj9E Cheers, Faith
3. I've just tried to put some shim underneath 'white plastic bit' - it'd be all good - action gets higer, but, then, somehow, E string gets muted somehow, and it's output is slightly lower.. There's a piezo underneath that white plastic bit, mind you.. I don't even have an idea, what to do.. I've tried removing the part of shim, covering piezo just right there, where the E string happens to be onto, but it didn't help..
4. Myself? Dude, you must be kidding - I am probably the worst craftsman out there.. What about standard electric bass bridge, would it be ok?
5. Anyone have an idea, whose job could it be? As I've said, it's handmade in Austria, not to forget inlaid H.. "Shockwave: Looks like a Carbon Fibre neck there. Those can get pretty pricey." and it actually is Carbon fibre neck..
6. Well, I could probably raise that white plastic thing above piezo, which holds the strings (just before the bridge..)
7. The problem is, I don't have an idea, how to raise it.. Bridge doesn't seem adjustable.. I've wrote to the previous owner asking about it. Any ideas on raising action?
8. A guy selling this bass, says it was made in Austria, bass features: Carbon neck; walnut body and headstock (?) Tuners - Schaller M4C Gold Bass bridge - Schaller 3D4G pickups - Select EMG Jazz Bass inlaid H letter on headstock.. pics: http://audio.ciklas.lt/prekes/kitaAudio/ki.../BassGitara.JPG http://audio.ciklas.lt/prekes/kitaAudio/ki...BassGitara1.JPG http://audio.ciklas.lt/prekes/kitaAudio/ki...M4CGoldBass.JPG http://audio.ciklas.lt/prekes/kitaAudio/ki...G(tiltelis).JPG Chap asks about 200 quid for it, worth anything? If it'd only be a 5er, I'd be tempted.. Faith
9. So, I got a little sound issue with my EUB. In the upper register of bass, In terms of 'frets', starting around the 18th one to the very end of fingerboard, nevermind, which string gets played, notes get cut - they do not produce the full sound, they just get cut after a moment, just like getting muted, if it makes sense.. I think, it's due to string/bridge action.. Should I raise the action a bit, or what? Cheers Faith BTW, that's how my EUB looks, if it helps..:
10. Man, the second vid is from Kaunas Jazz fest, biggest fest in our country, the event happens in my home-town.. Anyway, I didn't know, that Spyro Gyra played in Lithuania.. Guess that's because I wasn't yet in the scene then.. Scott's solo was ok, but his singing didn't make me much sense..
11. Ok, now here it goes, for you, readers-pros.. First of all, when you practice reading, what about 'all twelve keys' thing, i mean, do you set yourself a goal learning a line in all twelve keys? Secondly, about the clefs - in an actual reading-gig situation, do you happen to get any treble clef stuff to read, or it's all based on bass clef? cheers Faith
12. Stringing your 5er in E-C manner (as opposed to 'ordinary' B-G) is not a crime, isn't it, chaps?..
13. Oh no, dude, I'm not about paranoia anyway, you never know, if guitarist is a total tw@t..
14. The only question that bothers me, when I see people saying about 'having found a good band' is, well.. Do you know, why the previous bassist left the place? Just curiosity, nothing deep.
15. In fact, lots and lots of basslines, played in low register, are hard to hear properly, so, what I found, that helps when transcribing, particularly, basslines, is hooking the recording one octave up ("Transcribe" has this function, wonderful kit), and then the bassline is put to the front - 10 times easier to transcribe.
16. Ah, now I get it. As far as OT goes, that Jaco DVD/pdf method, for me, tuition wise, is one of the worst things I've ever seen - no actual system, exercises go disorderly, compared to their difficulty.. The video itself is just zany - it looks like Jaco was asked to get to the scene 5minutes ago, rather than looking prepared for the whole thing.. Awful.
17. Nice to see this going', guys!
modern bass by Jaco. I could find it done already but I find It's helping my theory chris
Eh?
18. I know, what you're saying,Rob. And, yep, it may be, that it is ME, who can't write it down, I just don't know it yet. Of course, there are some contentious places, which I'll be showing to my tutor for a revision, but, on the other hand, I'm not so much into perfection this time - as for the second transcription in my life, I'm happy to get basic and, yet, wonderful phrasal ideas, that Miles brought, and that's an awful lot from him in 8 choruses of the solo BTW, how do you do your transcribing, Rob and other folks? I mean, do you use your ear only(perfect pitch?), or do you use bass or piano? The way I do mine, is, first of all, singing a phrase properly, then finding it on piano (emm, sort of MIDI keyboard..), but, if keyboard doesn't help in terms of clarity, I use my bass for a clearer pitch. Cheers, Rob, Faith.
19. What gives bass a bit of shine and 'space' is, no doubt, Reverb..
20. I'm about to finish Miles solo on Straight No Chaser. The interesting thing here is rhythmic aspect - for the first time I've experienced what is called jazz articulation, i mean, it's stuff, when sometimes you just can't properly notate it in terms of rhythmic values.. and, today, when watching This Is It, I remembered one lovely Jackson 5's song - I Want You Back. I've never tried to transcribe anything funky/16th note stuff, so this is a bit of challenge, but, so far, it looks that I'm in the right way.. I'll post both transcriptions here when finished! Cheers Faith
21. I'm after jazz bossa.. I'll check those you've mentioned, thanks in advance.
22. Could anyone reccomend me some albums of jazz greats (bassists), playing famous standards/bossa nova's? I've got some Ron Carter stuff, but I ain't sure, if there are any pure bossas. Why I'm asking, is that I need to transcribe some lines, because I feel that my bossa playing is very poor in terms of note choices and rhythmic variety.. Cheers, faith.
23. Singlecuts - all the way for me, I like 'em very much.. Hope I get one made for me one day..
24. Bass nerd? What should that mean then, eh?
