http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=86323 For you, Hector, and other folks.. Miles Solo on Rhythm Changes (Oleo).
-
Here's another one, for all you jazzers.. Typical I-VI-II-V progressions, 2x of AABA's of Miles' solo.. There are some wonderful phrases out there, hunt for 'em. Chords are implicit/optional - you never know, what those jazzers could play in last 4 bars of A part.. I'll also put Sonny Rollins solo on this same tune, and, maybe, that little bit, when Miles solos once again after sax and piano, just before the ending.. Recording (Bags Groove) and transcription for you..
The clip you posted was great and the musicianship was superb. However, after about a minute, the bass just sounded like he was soloing, fret w***ing and just playing any old sh*t that comes into his head. It did not seem to have any reason, direction or melody to it.
Can't disagree more - to me, his solo was very good. In fact, other members, especially the drummer, made it sound so good - tension he made along with the solo going, was just perfect, to my ears. Other than that, it's purely matter of taste, of course.
meh. for the sake of not being an anti-social prick I have really tried and tried to listen to stuff like this, but by the end I always feel unmoved and uninspired. I then look to stuff like this in complete awe:
Amazing stuff..

You means, the years, when Miles had to play rock in pubs? Tutor told me somethin' about it, but I then thought, he was joking, eh..
What your missing is that Jazz is not the be all and end all in music. I'm going to say the only reason players get drawn to jazz is its the only place there chops & musical talent can be truly appreciated but that shouldn't stop them taking other gigs in different musical situations. What your missing is you naivety to think that jazz is the be all & end all in music, and thats a pretty sad thing.
Chops and talent? Bro, what you're saying, is just ridiculous.. Therefore, I can't remember saying a word about jazz being 'all & end all in music', but, whatever floats your boat.. I'll stick where we are, for now.
-
Just because YOU would choose a jazz gig with little money over a sell out tour with one of the biggest pop singers of all time is totally matters of opinions. So to take it back to your OP, yes i do think you are missing something.
You're saying, it matters of opinions (and yes, my opinion is clear- i would choose jazz gig/tour over a commercial pop one), and, then, I am missing something? Could you, please, be kind, tell me exactly, what's missing there..? Something tells me, you just can't get over my opinion, not that 'I'm missing something'..
I think the OP's original post indicates that they believe Jazz to be better than all other Genres, or certainly thats their preference as opposed to other more 'simple' music. The reason I say that is because they don't seem to be able to accept that perhaps these players LIKE playing their pop gigs. If the guys hated it, I perhaps think that their careers would be shortlived through bitterness.
I didn't say about claiming Jazz to better than anything else, but, can you deny, that those guys' preference is Jazz? I couldn't. Even more, nor you, nor I can tell, if Janek or Matt is enjoying those pop gigs. If they're smiling to the cameras, it doesn't ANYTHING about them - loving or hating, what they do. They simply have to do their job, smiling and doing whatever else it needs..
Absolutely! But I think the difference in this thread is when we are talking about professional musicians. If someone is a pro in a certain genre of music, does that preclude them from playing (or more particularly, getting paid for playing) a different genre? Some people would seem to think so.
No, it doesn't preclude them from anything. I just can't believe, how some people manage to garble my words, or 'add' something, and then, from all of that, 'making' me a snob. Amazing. Anyway, Bilbo was damn right about my point - I'm not about 'not doing' a thing, I'm just about what would I choose between two, if I had a chance to.
-
I'm late to this too, but IMO the OP is frighteningly snobby.
Anyone else want to add? Guys, you're simply ridiculous..
Seriously though, who would turn down the chance to be Whitney's touring bassist?! FFS. Or is it better to play in no-longer-smoky jazz clubs to 50 cool cats who are too far up their own arses to even appreciate what you are doing? Hmmmm. Sorry. That turned into a bit of a rant didn't it?
True, indeed. People always find a chance to express their opinions towards something, even it is not asked/discussed in the main theme.. Anyway, it's a very interesting theme we touched, especially Bilbo's thoughts (for me, at least), nevermind those few punks, who just pop in here to tell me (or more like to tell others?) how snobby I am.. Cheers Faith
You've come across as aggressive, and to deny your OP was anything other than snobbish is nonsense. Also, those of us who play "pop" music may be a mite naffed off at your insinuation that it is less worthy or skillful than jazz. An enormous amount of craft goes into most pop songs, on all instruments. And show me a jazz musician who can write credible lyrics. It's all about feel, interpretation and context. Family Man couldn't play bass like Alain Caron, but let's see if Alain Caron can make me dance? But you'll probably tell me dancing is vastly inferior to Chinese freestyle gymnastics now, won't you.
Did I say, that pop wass 'less worthy, skillful than jazz'? Show me that. All I said, It was strange to me, that those two guys do pop gigs aside - but that's probably because I don't know industry that well. As I've said, Doddy's and Bilbo comments on this made sense to me, and I'm cool with that. I myself love lots of pop stuff, and love getting gigs to do it, so there's nothing against pop from me. Hope, it's clear?
My post wasn't aimed at anyone in particular, it's something I have observed many times. And I'd thank you not to tell me to shut my mouth just because I have a different opinion to yours. You hardly ever post on the forum, and when you do your posts are full of snobbery, elitism & condescension.
Don't be zany, ok, mate.. Then again, if you have different opinion to mine, it's not necessary to call me a musical snob, is it? And, thanks for observation about my posts, I didn't know that Seems, I'm done with you.
-
What always cracks me up is it's the chin stroking musical snobs who have a problem with them doing it, NOT the players themselves.
So, I suppose, you're calling me a musical snob then? Dude, just shut your mouth, sit back and relax - I don't have any problem with them, they do what they want, in the end, it's all discussion, and it all makes sense to me, I have nothing to argue with. Clear? Musical snob, you see..

Wow, 12 responses in half an hour, that was catchy, wasn't it.. I know, what you're saying about money thing, anyway, it's somehow sad a bit, that such players have to take pop gig to pay their rent.. BTW, Doddy, what about that JEM tour?
-
There's a short one.. To me, it's a bit strange - one day a guy is pushing music boundaries in Blue Note with some smokin' jazzers (Garrison with Horacio Hernandez and Scott Kinsey..), and the other day he's playing behind Whitney Houston.. Matt's on the screen about 1:44.. Same one with Janek Gwizdala - he plays with Mike Stern, who has big tours on Europe, Canada, Asia and so on, but then, he passes Stern's gig to other folks, cuz he's doing tv shows with VV Brown, working as an MD for her, as I suppose.. They're both smoking players, 'dedicated' for jazz (as they say..), but.. I don't get it - is it all just money thing, or there's something beyond it? I believe, I wouldn't pass gigs with jazz giants just because I'd get a chance to do some tv show.. Just say a word, and I'll get my coat, eh.. Faith
I'd be happy to do any transcriptions purely for the practice and interest!
Exactly same for me.. I smell a bit of competition here comin'

I could do it for free, I believe..
MB1. Ashdown Little Bastard 30w valve amp... Anybody Got One? Have seen the Brochure ...What They like?... Are They LOUD?...are they on General Sale or just Limited Edition? Cheers!
Wow.. Can't help much, but, it's probably the first time I understood MB1's post (at least, I think, that I do.. It's about the amplifier, isn't it? ).. No offense intended, though I'll get my coat anyway..

Anyone could offer any good 'starter' exercises to become familiar with Thumb position? All I do now, is C major scale, starting on low E, and, ending on C..
+1 for transcribing existing solos. Ray Brown is probably a good start - his solo playing is very logical and lick based.
Can't agree with it. If you want to sound like a another bassplayer when soloing, well then, go on, do it, transcribe Ray, transcribe Carter, transcribe every bassplayer you hear. Oh and don't forget Jaco IMHO, if you want to sound fresh, there are helluva lot other instrumentalists out there - saxophonists, trumpetists, guitarists, pianists - there's plenty to learn from, Miles is a good start, as I've said before. What I mean by saying 'sounding fresh', is that, transcribing, for eg., a sax solo will help you to think and to play beyond your instrument boundaries. It may sound a bit wierd, but, try it, and you'll get, what I mean..
-
I was after the same thing some time ago.. So, as others said, get a fretless, put nylon strings on, play with the EQ a bit - cut the mids off, and some highs.. and, some bass (at least, this worked for me, when I tried to make my EUB sound more-like-a double bass..) AND - most important of all, listen to double bass players closely - you have to get that DB sound into your ears - it will help to reproduce it on electric bass massively.. For me, it's kinda hard to describe, what a pure DB sounds like - to me, it's sound is a bit 'soulless', 'empty', 'wolly', if you know, what I mean.. But that's what makes it sooo special Try to describe yourself a DB sound - maybe it will help you to find it, what you're looking after cheers Faith

A Review of The Players School of Music, Part 2
Faithless replied to funkle's topic in General Discussion
I would definetly like to hear his 'famous' views on metronome.. Or maybe any of you could share it? -
You know, I was practising walking over Rhythm Changes in key of Gb (I was going through all the keys, little by little..) just before my last week 'tourist' journey to Germany with my girl (I was dragged kicking and screaming, mind you..) - and, walking over those changes was so easy. Now, I was off to Germany for 4 days, and then, I finally got to practise only after 6 days 'break'.. It was yesterday, when tried to rush trough the same changes - same key, same tempo, after 8 bars or so, I stopped, and, WOW.. They were like all new to me, and, hmmmm, key of Gb, you see..!!! I had to re-work all the stuff, little by little, bar by bar, just to get it where I was (!) (hopefully..), not to talk about progress.. Now this really showed me, how practise routine is important (I was practising those changes for a few weeks each day, 20 minutes..) - well, at least, it's better than to shed for one random day, 3 hours, isn't it.. Have you faced anything like this in your practice?
