You probably know this tune, but there's a horn section added and Janek is playing his Fodera, which sounds very nice to my ears.. (he always plays this tune on P bass, but there were issues with delivering backline to that very show..) Check out those nice horn arrangements by Janek, and some real pro playing.. easy Faith

ACG all the way!!!!!! Because it's so comfortable, first of all..

Updated, ouput issue sorted - learn, how to properly EQ, kids, heh !

So, I've just got my new ACG this morning, that I bought from Rich.. I was thinking of going for ACG anyway (as I'm into 33" scale now), but, this bass, in terms of specs, was simply beyond my expectations, so I couldn't do anything more than buy it.. I haven't played it a lot yet, but it felt very nice, LOADS of tones.. really happy with it. I switched it to E-C, now there's left a minor truss rod adjustment, action tweak, and in the evening, I hope to blow through some changes on it The interesting bit is that, the bass got somehow damaged during his journey (shipped with FedEx) from UK to Lithuania - lateral knob was kinda damaged - it was 'inclined' about 30 degrees or so - and the bass was in Hiscox hard-case! I don't have a single idea, how could that happen, other than something really heavy was put on the case.. other than that, a cracking bassey.. post your impressions on ACG's, fellas easy Faith

+100 for that book, I'm working on it slowly.. Loads of reading stuff, very informative and clear.. I doubt if you would find anything better than that... easy faith

Synth bass! Where do you stand with it?
Faithless replied to risingson's topic in General Discussion
Wicked thing.. At the mo, I'm very much into pop/RnB synth bass stuff - listening/transcribing Britney, Jay-Z, M Jackson and other fellas, just to see how it works, and adapting it on electric bass.. Now, are those synth things expensive? I might be tempted to try one, yet, don't need anything boutique.. -
Believe me, dude, it's as sunny here in Vilnius also.. (about 30-32C degrees..) I won't make it, sadly, as I'm playing in other fest on those days.. Best of luck, enjoy Lithuania, mate! easy Faith
to be honest im really not keen on Hadrian Feraud...the stuff ive seen is of his is noodle city...especially the Gospelchops DVD...what he was doing on there i will never know..maybe i havent seen the best of him
Well, I don't dig Hadrien's stuff either, but, on that gig, he was doin' his thing ok, and, during the last tune, he came up with a 'flurry' solo, which was simply sick.. I haven't heard any better than that from him anymore so far..
-
Here's my quickie, rushing through transcription, originally that's a synth bassline, and it's just wicked.. I'll bring you more of stuff like this.. You wouldn't believe, how much wicked pop/synth bass stuff is out there..
-
Seen Billy last year, along with Hadrien Feraud.. Wasn't gobsmacked by Billie's stuff, but, Hadrien.. He was a few steps higher, than other musos on the stage..

Well, I thought I won't happen to bump into this thread, but, 'best in the world?'.. Now, just to make it clear, while I have never been a fan of Stanley (doubt, that I'll ever be), but I dig that he's a great cat, it's cool that lots of folks appreciate him (and I know that there is Something to appreciate him for..), and I don't have a single problem with neither of those.. But, to answer, why I don't listen to him, is that, for me, his music, for years, doesn't go anywhere, he simply doesn't push it, and it's obvious why.. He's known doing that THING, playing THAT style, and he probably gets helluva lot money for that thing, so it's hard for him to 'invent' something new (and he, obviously, doesn't need to do that).. So, it's a shame at some point for me, if that makes sense.. So, just to answer your question - no, he's not the best for me easy Faith

Stevie blowing through the Changes.. I wasn't expecting this, actually, I'm out of words.. anyone's after transcribing S.Wonder?
-
I don't think, that there's 'One and the Only' answer.. When I got this question to myself, I searched, how famous bassists approached playing 4ths, and I found all them saying something like - 'it depends on situation, I don't think about it, when I play'.. The only solution, IMHO, is practicing a lot - your hands will guide you. My advice - get a copy of Hanon Virtuoso Pianist book, take a few exercises that look most uncomfortable to you (there are a few of exercises with intervals of 4th..), and practice it to death, everyday. Your hands will guide you, once again..

Scott, I dig, what you're saying, bro, but you missed my point a bit I know, that transcription is a great thing for improvisation, and, that's what I'm doing everyday, transcribing stuff, and trying to learn from it (there are a few transcriptions of the Greats put here by me, you can check 'em out), but, learning plain licks is, for me at least, simply unjustifiable.. Well, unless you wanna be 'famous' for using other cat's 'sounds', that is.. I don't really wanna end up playing a solo, making a lick, and hearing someone sayin': "Dang, that guy sounds just like Richard Bona!" Awful. But, then, that's just me.. easy Faith
-
Well, it's obvious for me, I believe.. If music 'asks' for a certain sound, I'll do my best to fit the situation, it's not an issue for me. And, there comes the big challenge - to manage to fit the music, right.. (in terms of sound/approach/playing style)

Making 6-string set of Ernie Balls - what gauge C string?
Faithless replied to JimBobTTD's topic in Accessories and Misc
About C string feeling thin and sounding weedy - I think, it's more to do with the bass scale, than strings.. If you want good sounding C, in my opinion, you should be going for 33' scale bass.. (That's what I'm doing after trying E-C tuning on my 34' Ibby.. it doesn't sound good, and it's not the string problem..) -
As it's a wicked (synth) bassline, I thought of doing a proper transcription of it.. Although, I didn't add all those slides/slurs - you should be listening first, and matching all those lil' details, notes are already given to you.. Learn it! And, sorry, there's no tab, but, then, there's no excuse for 'em, is it.. Doddy, may I now join Tablature Disapproval Specs club? easy Faith

What are you transcribing at the moment?
Faithless replied to Faithless's topic in General Discussion
Finished.. I've made a quick rush through it.. What a wicked bassline! If's anyone's after dipping into varies styles, it's a must to learn - a nice example of pure Pop/RnB stuff.. transcription..: -
I wanted to share the same thing about this lick, but Doddy's first in here.. Anyway, I would stay away from all licks (esp that Bona lick..) and stuff like that - it will keep you fresh, believe me..

What are you transcribing at the moment?
Faithless replied to Faithless's topic in General Discussion
I'm working on Britney Spears - Toxic .. No, I'm not kidding The bassline (synth bass) is just wicked.. -
Well, while I have my favourite style (kind of NY Jazz/Funk..), I'm heading to 'freelance' musician (if that's a correct term for cats like Janek or Doddy..), so, being versalite is all the way for me.. The thing is, that, in our area (that is Lithuania..) there is very little of that 'freelance' scene, where you can 'act' like a freelance musician, so I'm thinking of moving from there, as fast, as I get my chops together..
-
I'd say, set a few main goals, and work on them every day, at least a lil' bit on each, for example: Technique/Time, Reading, Stylistics (jazz, reggae, disco, latin..), Theory, Improvisation. It's waaaay better to have 'moderate' technique and improvisation skills, rather than flawless technique, and not being able to improvise properly at all. Or vice versa.. Having good basics of each (Tech/Improvisation/reading/etc), is essential, I think, and, well, you can always expand on each later on, right Nevertheless, aside from my mumblings, if I were you, I'd get a teacher, tell him my goals (what do I want to achieve), so that he could guide you, how to get it going.. easy faith
