1. The 410 cab solution is very tough to beat, IMO..and I doubt a 212 will be able to do it but I think you could go 212 and not lose too much. I think you'll be able to broadly do the same gigs as any 212 should be good for 600w..and you'll need a special amp to be able to push that at 4ohms anyway. Or...you could go 2x210 which keeps the 410 config but with 2 cabs. You aren't going to do it with a single speaker ..that is not to say these options should be discounted, completely, but they will not match a good 410, IMO. People talk about running 500watts but how close do you actually get to max'ing the amp..are you a quiet player? If so, you'll be asking more of your amp. Seperates are an expensive option, but you get the better carry....
2. I'd rather do Covers than a tribute band... Some of the recent ones I've seen, trade so HEAVILY on trying to be so close to the original... you'd get the impression they almost actually think they are them.... has to be seen to be believed It wouldn't be half so bad if they were half decent musically
3. I don't know if it is a general view on here, but I think it should be. We get asked to play Beer Festivals ( for example ) and we quote a price that is nowhere near a pub fee. The organiser may well cough a bit and say we don't get that in a pub..and that much is true but we feel we can step up on a larger stage and so we aren't really the same band even in playing terms.. I think this is a selling point that we have... if the budget allows, we may well bring in BV's and horns as well, and we will put in songs especially for them. To do this actually costs us..as the wage bill has to spread further but it accentuates the difference...and we like to do it so we live with that.. The show will be a max of 2 hrs...the same as any other gig we do... but we will bring in songs for the 'guests' We never think of ourselves as a pub band as they do not constitute even 50% of our gigs .. we only do pubs that work for us... as in, we like the pub and LL, and we only have 3 regular pubs like that ... and we stand a good chance to pick up these other gigs. We regard pubs as a lost leader/showcase type gig... they are certainly too much work for the money, so they have to have other attracttions.. I see too many bands round here do a pub set on a bigger stage and they wonder why they get invited to do the 'charity' Beer Fests..
4.
Because you can learn a lot by learning exactly how a great song (or bassline) is put together! Also, it can be great fun...
Or not...you might like the tune, but think the playings on the track doesn't work... and you can do a better version. You have to know the difference as watching 3 out of 4 guys trying to nail a track with the 4th one way adrift can be quite funny,..not to mention a train-wreck
5.
Why is it that the general consensus seems to be that a function band should be charging in the region of £800 whereas a pub band should be charging around half that, or probably less? And if such a wide difference is OK, then what's so wrong about bands playing for free if they're happy to do so?
Our show is different for venues... pubs are throwaway gigs and lost leaders. A venue will possibly demand a sound check in the early evening. Weddings aren't really a gig we want so we charge accordingly. £800-1000. Parties have mates rates of £550..and others from £750. For an extra special show we will draft in guests and charge accordingly.
6. The only thing that I don't like about the plan is the 250w 410. That is a very low output figure and suggests very old chassis; imo,,, in which case I wouldn't trust them running loud or hard. That apart, the plan would normally work pretty well.
7.
JTUK what is it you dont like about the cabs if you dont mind me asking?
Always, ALWAYS hear a dull thud from them... and this is also the sound I hear other players get... without exception, which is my downer on Markbass. I think it sounds cheap and nasty ...not that I think Markbass are cheap and nasty, in terms of build, but..???? I can't recall a time when I haven't hear that dullness. It is a low mid spongey sound...and seems to be a characteristic from the 15's, 12's and even 10's. The cabs do not seem to project. I am not a fan of 15's and not so entirely convinced by 12's as they are a middle ground between 15 and 10's that doesn't really come off..but that is another thread. Even the 10's don't gtet off scot-free. I believe Markbass to be decent enough..well made and decent spec, but the cabs just sound lacking in any nice sort of dynamic. Even when we run a kick drum thru a 102 combo, it has that dullness there. I just think that the sound does not add up to my ears... sorry.
8. To my mind, I'll probably put up with a lot in a rehearsal room as it is my decision if I can't be arse to carry in my rig. But for local gigs, I will not accept the backline 'supplied' in most of the cases unless I am totally satisfied by the technical rider should they have one...and invaribly they don't, so I carry my own. If you have flown into the gig, then you hope the whole deal is on a sufficient level that they will be on the ball and they will have asked you to 'choose' from a list...but then the monitoring and fills will also be upto the job as well.
9. And that Clover is mighty pretty, so if it sounds and plays as good as it looks..????
10. Out of the intial 3, I'd be thinking the Lull... But you might need to ring round the specialist bass shops like the Gallery or Bass Gear to see what they have ..or expect to have. These type of basses don't tend to hang around if they are any good.
11.
I don't NEED to sell it to buy the Jazz but everytime I've had 3 basses, one never leaves it's case so it's self imposed. It doesn't make any sense at all selling this because it's a much much better bass and even does a great impression of a Jazz but as I said GAS is GAS innit.
GAS is overrated... if you can afford to have 3 basses at any one time and the only criteria that one gets left behind... See which one stays in the case the most often..and that is the one you don't need.
12. I don't think I'd sell that.. but I am not sure what you are after apart from GAS. I have GAs for 2 sets of cabs but I don't need any of them... so I am in no hurry to make a choice which may well not work out anyway... Now, if you HAD to sell as the bass had no use at all... then that is different, but apart from the 'one-in, one-out' rule..which is pretty stupid in itself I don't see why you need to go thru all this..
13. In recent times? GK RB combo...
14. Not a fan of the cabs..in a general sense so if I wanted to change anything, I'd start with the cabs..
15. Weddings can be strange.... they don't mind paying £1000 for a photographer but think they can get away with a cheap band for £600. If that is what they think, then let them go ahead...
16.
If Behringer have upped their game to the same degree as Skoda, then there's no reason not to go that way.
Who upped Skoda's game.. Skoda themselves or Volkswagen?
17. [sup]I find the very best amps have very little EQ..or need litttle EQ so you might want tio decide whether you like the sound of your bass or need to change it.[/sup] [sup]This is, of course the wrong fight to get into. IMO.[/sup] [sup]The best amps tend to have substantial output stages, IMO..like the DB750's and the SVT and Mesa All valve jobs.but you wont find killer EQ on the[/sup] [sup]these amps as they don't need it. Simple dials will suffice..[/sup] [sup]How much on a tone colour do you really want..?[/sup] [sup]For me, if the basses sounded bad thru one of those amps..the bass would have to go...[/sup]
18. That is no crime in itself and the Who aren't alone in that, for sure. I thought they were a couple fo great songs in there but the band was a bit meh.. together it worked, Same with Floyd but they had the good sense or fortune to augment for their best live work with a great band. You like to see artists keep moving forward but sometimes they are done after a few albums..
19. I'm all for a good song..... but you have to be able to play it. To have all the 'chops' under the sun is no good if it feels crap..but then a good song ruined by poor playing is just as bad.
20.
I'd say that's cheap for an up to speed drop in horn section. Our horn guys are a £400 plus travelling...
They are local, mates, and we have the charts already. It is cheap as they can earn that each otherwise
21. We use Thomans Starville 4 LEDS. One set of 4 lights a small 5x5mtr area in a pub well enough. 2 would be better but we never really have enough room as it is, so anothe tripod..?? I find the illumination good enough. We hire other stuff in if required. The tripods themselves are cheap and nasty...and the foor controller is ok... but the lights themselves are where the money is well spent, IMO. The other components can easily and cheaply be replaced
22. The western worker needs a certain income otherwise you could pretty much outsource everything... that isn't going to help european jobs if the cheap labour rates are in the Far East If the U.K makes good stuff..and we can do.. then I'll start to look there... but I believe a premium price really needs a premium product as well, and by premium, I mean better than the norm Sooner or alter, I expect the E.U to become a protected power block as otherwise they will get priced out of most markets...unless you follow the French buying maxim of 'buy French'...but would you buy their cars..??? :lol; but that is another topic, entirely
23. Open hand or closed grip...never did Will Lee any harm, but generally open is better, IMO.
24. Building left hand strenght is one of the hardest parts. Unless you have small hands, 1 finger per fret is easily achievable and you should get enough strenght in your littel finger to fret low notes. You will need to make room for your hand to stretch so you will need to position the thumb on the back of the neck..and adjust the bass height to be able to do this. But you will just need to put the time in ...
