1. Don't do it...you aren't paid enough to HAVE to do it. If you sort them out with a band then even better... But...don't expect to get another gig there too easily. But then again, we vet gigs as much as they would vet us. and we do just a handful of pubs.
2. I couldn't qualify even if I wanted to...
3. The only thing that SS Ampegs have going for them is the Ampeg badge...IMO.. assuming that Ampegs actually do it for you. I'd put GK in front of them, tbh... as the Ampeg is a one trick pony and you can forget about EQ... altho the valve amps do that trick really well, IMO..
4. I've done 3 in a day before but I didn't have to work the next day and I've done 3 consecutive gigs after 3 12 hs shifts over a weekend and I wouldn't be doing that again even if I still did the shifts. This is also one reason why i very rarely now take gigs over 2 hrs total playing time..
5.
LEDs are only worth putting along the top edge side dots. Number of strings is irrelevant.
Agree.... and battery life is an issue..
6.
Hmmm, lots of people recommending Markbass combos - I'd try one first - I found my Geoff Berlin combo character-less and without any warmth - needed a Compressor before it came to life.
Indeed... this sort of question has even more compromises to entertain than normal.. hence me putting the better amps but heavier options first, IMO. But I'd certainly put Markbass combos above the Ampeg NEO's and GK variants..from my experience.
7. When someone has a voice that stops you in your tracks....and there are also varying degrees of that, of course. Too many vocals are just another noise.... and it is an area that too many bands skimp on, IMO. The vox should be the focal point of the band so the P.A should be the best you can afford ..and be capable of always outreaching the band volume, If you have one that can really sing, then settle for that... if they have charisma as well, you have gold dust...as they are very few and far between. Round here, you have 'make-do's, and few real quality vocals, but none have the frontman charisma AND great vox.. I would always settle for the better vox over a front person, but there can be mileage in both...
8. SWR Redhead or Eden variant for sound... but CMD 102 for weight. IMO. If you can use a class D amp and a NEO cab you can have a capable and lighter rig in seperates anyway.
9. I always have a rig set up.... my regular amps might stay cased up...and I'll rotate the cabs
10. The thing is that when people get to a certain level engrs can't pull them up on it ..or daren't... but you wont get a studio gig with that sort of playing in the first instance... I think it will mix down ok but you woundn't be happy to be solo'd ...and there would probably be a lot of fixing which again is time and money which some people wouldn't or couldn't spend.
11. Yep, sounds awful...thank god for a good mix. Can't hear the other example....
12.
That's a bit odd,I have never had a post only di on any amp.
But with an OTB, post is the only reason you'd have it on stage.
13. If you are sure of your Monitor mix... and I would check that you get your own.... then you just need a pre signal and something like a Tonehammer would do that with a degree of control... or if you have a stage mon engr...let him do it straight off the DI box... On big stages, your cab set-up becomes your own personal bass monitor system anyway... and fills and wedges do the mix..
14. I'd want to be confident that it could be repaired and that I could achieve a sale price taking account the repair cost. I'd be pricing it to buy with all that in mind. Maybe £200 is about right so you can afford to do a proper job on it. Oh, I would set it up properly as well before making an offer.
15. Funnily enough I not a fan of the MM slap tone...it was fine when LJ was doing it but I find the MM pre amp clumsy in this regard. I eventually backed off EVERYTHING ...as that bass boost is very powerful and +15db of treble cuts your head off in a very harsh tone. The bass slap tone is inherrently going to be scooped for most people but the trick is setting up the bass to sound good with both styles. I normally start with the slap tone and work back to fingers... and you really want these to work with no EQ adjustments at all. Flats are a good idea... if you can get a cultured sound from them... and this can set your sound apart from the classic smiley tones..!!! Slap have evolved so much that no one uses the classic 80-90's sounds..or style, for that matter...IMO.. or really shouldn't..
16.
LED lights are also great as they dont get hot so they can be unplugged and in the van 2 mins after the last drunken tosser has offered out the brides brother or started telling you about his mate at works Gibson Stradavaricastor worth millions
And you wonder why we don't want to do them..???
17.
Hopefully the bride and groom will ring another band more obliging and pay a little bit more for the priveledge then
They should know what they are getting... they should have seen us and want us for what we do... If they want anything else... or they want to influence the set, not really interested and they are more than welcome to look elsewhere. We aren't a wedding band and avoid them mostly.
18. Play and sound great... on the few Bass Gear had in at the time.. Still a bit too cartoon shaped for me, tho.
19. Nope..because it delays the exit and prolongs the time spent at the gig. We quote for 2 hrs and after that we are packing up.
20. The reason people knock mids out of their sound is because they can't play with them... as you end up with every nuance jumoning out at you. If you perserve with them, they will clean up your sound and style no end... but they can also be off puting and harse so cut or boost EQ methodically and sparingly.. I am not sure having to play with a crap sound onstage helps either... as you can't really be in two places at once to know what it always sounds like outfront. I'd have no truck with an engr if he wanted to do that either..

Always a pair, for me...
22. The equation of what to charge for ticketed gross is interesting.... 25% seems way too low but 60% is optimistic and I can't see that working IME On figures of around £3500 to £4000 to the venue in sales ...
23. Don't agree, we will do a pub at pub rates and quote £600 upwards for a party for mates and around £1000 for weddings. Our festival rate isn't that much lower but we have better shows for them. Depends if you start at a pub band.... We limit what we do in that regard as it impacts on the rate and price of tickets you can charge ... But we will do a pub if we like the place and use it as a loss leader.
24. With two high powered gtrs, there is always a problem with the bass sound being squeezed and the bass ending up with a useable sound rather than desirable. But if you can't make your rig sound like you want on stage, then maybe the rig is wrong... and it doesn't cut it when the chips are down. Stages are never a really controlled place at volume and the trick is just to keep everything from toppling over a certain volume point. Depends on the P.A spec and monitors, but you might have to back off the amp sound and let the mon feed do more work. The trouble with this is that you might not get the set-up time to make it work. An unquantifiable problem if the stage sizes vary.. If the FOH is good and assuming you believe this feedback...then talk to the engr and try to get an idea of how he makes it work. The difference is that he has all feeds to mix and compliment...maybe your bands stage sound is all about the individual with no concern for the overall mon sound...??
25.
No idea about jazz Nige, but Stock , Aitken and Waterman had a factory making hits , was it the quality of the material or the selling of it that really counted ?
The gay market...at first....pre Waterman.
