This is horror reading..... It seems that no one controls the bill or controls the stage...or not much at all...??? I understand on multi bills you might not actually know who has supplied what...but if you don't know that then I'd ship in my gear and ship it off as well...

You can't really blame the venue with playing it their way as they have to pay the bills and the whole game is getting harder in terms of covering higher rent and rates etc. One of the best supporters of the Live music scene round seem to have quite a high turnover of 'managers' so good for bands in tersm of pubs/clubs putting on music but bad for the LL.... The very vocal but unsupported metal scene here complain that they can't get gigs and even the ones they put on themselves sound like a real struggle... It isn't my thing but I've been to a couple... but this clique makes a huge noise about supporting the live music scene...but you don't tend to see them out and about at anything but their own events. If they were more visible at all types of dates maybe the favour would be returned more readily.... but you prorbably couldn't get a more collective insular bunch... It is the same with promoting.... people will do loads of work in local blogs and whats-on event diary magazines but they only cover what their particular bent is... You'd think no other music existed... :lol; but the music public out supports the covers scene by .... well, pick a figure... 50-1...???? Tis a funny old hobby-horse..

You'll need to talk to them to see if they have cone kits for your model.
-
For a heavy gig, I'd look at GK ampwise and their 115 and 210 combinations.
-
It is just music... if you put the part in and it doesn't come off.... then you've failed. There aren't many places in a song that anything more than a fill will work ..unless it is an out and out slap riff and then you really need the groove... It is like most solo-type elements, if you go for it, you better have something to say..

Does anyone else, sort of, 'flick' the strings when plucking?
JTUK replied to gafbass02's topic in General Discussion
Percussive slaps, rakes up and down..anything really.... but I do it as an effect.... not as a subconscious thing.. -
You wont get a 410 sound out of a 112... It wouldn't be a given with a 212, IME... so you are going to have to accept sound compromises with a 112 cab. What the 410 will do effortlessy will be hard work for the 112..but if you can reconcile yourself with that....then ok. People may tell you they gig with a 112 with no problems but only you'll know whether that is possible in your circumstances. I run a pr of decent 112's and they are still some way behind my 2x210's. The carry is the only reason I keep them and that may be the only reason it works for most.. and that is ok... but don't think it is an easy swap.. IME/IMO

Realy really really got to ask

Not sure hwo that can shaoe up to be that important ...I am running the track from recollection and I would have the key part and the gtr answering before the kit and bass slams in..??
-
Yes, good luck indeed... They whould have to be really REALLY good friends... Who would want to share their special day..???

Had a great fun as we booked a pub gig as a paid rehearsal for a guy that will be working with us thru the summer. He is sheer quality...not surprisngly.. and will give a few new gears to go thru. The number of times the old tired songs took off was very pleasing...but I can see we overdid it from the singers POV.. But as a 1st gig, that was allowed.

I'll give him a cleaner that usual signal if I think the room is a bit of a problem...and if we really have a hard job then we need to talk and sort it out amongst ourselves. What you don't really want to do if give him nothing to be able to clean up as that is not helpful, but I don't think Engrs should have a pre-conceived set-in-stone bass sound and what comes back on stage should be something to work with. I start with setting up my sound ..which is not bass heavy..so I can hear everything I want to play across the strings. Effects need to be thought thru very carefully.,.. so again, I'll be sending a lighter signal than usual and maybe take 2 channels if poss. It depends on the engr obviously, so if you find good ones, try and get them on your gigs.as much as possible. Finally, you need to be pretty adadptable with the way you can get a sound out of the instrument, IME...so you may have to modify yout technique a bit...i.e if you play with a lot of attack from the right hand.. this might not leave you with much room to change things.. A recent gig, the bass player turned up with a lovely looking Warwick, GK rig and FX.. and with the whole combination, he had nowhere to go with his sound..and eventually had to play blind with a bleed out of the monitors. The room was high and hard so it was boom-city and a lot of frustration for him. I just made a note not to increase the volume off the onboard bass control... which is a cheap trick for guys who play actives.. and it was fine all night as far as I was concerned. Usually, we get good comments for our sound as a band, so to get floored with a bad mix would cause a big post mortem

We will have a typical band fee and then load in multiples of £10's for fuel/transport depending how far we have to travel.. The most we have gotten is £55 per car but we made it work with 3 cars and this was a gig for the Military who seemed to have a healthy budget. I think London and 1 hr is the most we would travel..and then it would have to be a very special gig
-
Value for money,..? I'd be looking at EBS Classic 112 as it is great looking cab. but I think there would be a downside at that price..maybe the horn and the power rating..?

We've gone thru the idea of carrying less and packing better and all we managed to achieve was to get rid of a C-Audio amp and replace it with a Crown. We've kept the Passive EV cabs for Keys, and run actives for P.A....that got rid of another C-Audio, and Martin tops.. We will probably bring in more lights so we haven't achieved much for the spend... and that is without the Nord Piano. We haven't downgraded the sound...and wouldn't consider that as a reason for change... Of all the pub type venues that offer a house P.A round here that we would play... we wouldn't use it, tbh as the kit is average and probably hammered. I've seen other bands there using the P.A's so I know what it sounds like.

Seems like you are doing well with the project then. It is interesting to hear about the music scene in other parts of the country so I think we must be quite lucky down here. Don't want to go overboard on that as there are still too many bands per venue but then that is probably a geedy muso POV...i,e nine.. as I want the rates to go up and there are plenty of acts who work cheap.. so don't need more I am not entirely unsympathetic in how a bands gets gigs..and we have all been through that, but I am a firm believer in getting paid...particualy as a band will pretty much determine the success of the event, and certainly more than bar staff...who WILL be paid. The one things that we have found is that certain pubs are more open to 'alternative music' and I know the LL's are music fans. They don't want to make a loss..and tbf, I don't believe they do most of the time, but they are to be applauded for giving bands a chance. The LL might have a 3 band bill..which they sort amongst themselves with gear share or however but they understand that the only real thing that matters is that it is NOT a complete waste of time. If the bands play ball... they wil get a date... altho it is fair to say that a known Covers will likley get offered the dates before the deserving Originals... but it seems healthy enough. Of course, thurs night is a 'down' night these days for a reason..it is tough to get people out on workdates, these days. That much has changed these last few years. London will compound the problem if only on the numbers front.. more bands, less punters, I'd guess but we find the money far better once you get IN ... If a covers band is charging £400 they are getting very close to having a door price..IMO

I've played plenty of outdoor gigs but the best were not in this country...or subject to rain. That said, the stages were well run.... except for the one in Thessalonika which was a nightmare... but that is the Greeks for you where nothing runs well unless in Athens and even then..??? ... Now, we are in the land of H&S so even a decent sized Beer Festival will have to dance through hoops to get their event signed off, IME I believe there is a 'license' type figure of 250 and anything above that gets far more interest from the authorities... A friend of mine is arranging a multi band event over 2 days and the local council kill him even though it is charity. He reckons his donations have to hit £3000 even if he gets most services..including the acts, donated as a favour. He is a very popular guy and people are willing to help, but even so... that seems the start-off fgure. Other stages this summer will cost from £9000 to £15000 for the weekend, IIRC..

That is doing it properly from the end that I am interested in... Isn't upto me to design their stage area or build it... just that we would tell them what we needed and if it made sense we'd do the date. They could have a stage plan with a technical rider. Anymore than that, I'd only be willing to advise from the bands POV... I wouldn't be doing the risk assessment, comply with lisensing officials or speccing the power required... They could have the name of a few companies that do the lights and P.A..and a few that build floor stages and a few scaffold teams and generator suppliers How much more would I want to be involved..??
-
Covers or originals..?? I don't think there is much excuse if you play covers...well, certainly not round here... The originals do less well but then they are pushing the wrong thing..as in metal acts, typically, and they can't get anyone to attend their self promoted gigs. I don't think they are getting the message as they seem to berate the venues for not promoting when it should really be a two-way street... If a power pop/punk trio had good catchy songs, then I would think they could price themselves into a few gigs but they would have to be convincing on the phone. Thursday night is demo night round here...and many bands use it as an EP launch date or some such and one or two music fan LL's will give them a chance to convince. If they pass this sort of audition, he will give them a date...but they may be up against 'proven' cover draws..!! I've had this debate recently and was accused of not knowing what original bands go thru... well, we have all done the London trawl and I doubt they have rewritten that book.. It is ALL about getting a date and getting numbers in... that is it. Nobody says it is easy, tho...
Describe how to do it properly. You turn up, punters are standing in the rain waiting... Then what ?
You agree in advance that the stage must be weather-proof and there is a contingency venue if not.. You get the fee paid in advance and you turn up and evaluate the stage and the weather. You do it this way as in this country the weather is too often a factor. No one wants an event rained off but they don't want a law-suit or worse either.. We take a deposit for outside venues after we booked out dates for two of them to fold at the last minute... I agreed with the organisers pulling the plug before we did...

Aguilar DB750, should I swap to a Tone Hammer 500?
JTUK replied to jembullo's topic in Amps and Cabs
Sh*t!!! Almost as much as my old Trace Elliot combo (~40kg)!!!
But.... I have to say it is worth dragging around for a few gigs. I don't tend to use it in pubs tho... -

Put it on the scales last night, Barrie. 29.3 kgs. I have to pick the gigs that I want it on
