1. Do it properly or not at all..
2. Perfect match is the DB cabs, of course. There was a 410 here recently... but I run 2xDB210's and the sound is awesome.
3.
I'd be interested to see how much it weighs. I keep reading that it's heavier than stated but don't know anyone that's actually put one on some scales
ha ha ...take it from me, it is nowhere near 43lbs... as in 29kgs...!!!!
4. Might have been interested if we could reconcile the material.
5. Matching headstocks...?? no, !! altho matching wood is better than painted .. I like nice wood to be shown.
6. It depends how you have to cover the dates that you do.. I could do most of my diary..well, all of it, as it stands today.. with any of the 3 heads I own. I have a preference and I regard on as the backup.. the other two are whims on the day, almost.
7. The notion of not messing up the tone is the best, IMO. I don't like really pokey pickups for that reason as the extra thump they deliver normally comes as thicker bass and the more bass you add to the signal, the more chance you have of destroying tone. Singles for me...
8. Transport links are key...so I wonder why this place is struggling if the place is easy to get to. It needs a catchment area where people will turn up on the off chance..but most of all, it needs patience and an atmosphere. The best venue/pub in my town has been two years of HARD work. Now, people turn up as they know the bands will be worth checking out. They may not stay all evening but you don't want to give them an excuse never to return...
9.
So is "almost" good enough?
I think this is THE decision. Personally, I would have them both... and that is why I retain the TF 550-B which is very good but handles the smaller gigs better..in the way it doesn't force the bass throughout the room..almost overwhelming it..in a good way like the DB750 does...or at least that is the feedback I get from people.. If I didn't have the DB, I was be perfectly happy with the TF550-B but having them to compare, the difference is discernable, IMO. So, the decision on which amp to take out is made on what carry I want and how important it is to have the A rig on that gig.... Do yourself a favour and get the TH in and up to speed BEFORE you sell the DB750..??
10. On a musical level every band can benefit from keys, IMO... on a personal level, watch out for the uinprofesionallism to creep in.. Is she hot.. ?
11. My opinion is that the DB750 is a CLASS amp...and up there with the very very few. Certainly the best amp I've used and that includes 400plus and SVT's tubes I think they are too much amp for a pub date which is why mine doesn't got out on those dates much so I would be loathe to swap it in for the TH. I think the sound is ALL to do with the output stage and as good as a TH EQ is... it doesn't have that back-end, ...but if you can reconcile that loss, and I do regard it as a loss when comparing a DB750 to the TF550-B which I run as backup, then you will make another end user very happy I would put your TH in the same ballpark quality-wise..and I do like the TH pedal.. Me, I wouldn't do it... but whoever says the DB amp is 40lbs is raving mad.. more like 70...FFS..!!!!

pre amps

I have identical pre amps on two basses..1 9v batttery lasts eons on one bass and no time at all on another. You have a short of some kind. Mine was traced to to jack socket not disengaging the batt connect when the lead was pulled out. A simple change of the jack socket sorted this.
13. I was looking for something like this... I just got my GT10-B yesterday.. bug..!!
14.
Use the switch on SS, don't use Timbre and Enhance and rest is on the EQ (ususally i take away some bass and add some upper mids, light changes) But to be fair, the sound that is working for me onstage involves using the Enhance and, if i'm with the Sandberg i'll change the switch to Valve so i can get some vintage warmth, i'm not a flat (clinical) purist. All i'm saying is that i like and want my cabs to be flat because they're only there to put out what i'm putting in and i want the changes i make on bass (or amp) EQ to be properly translated outside, not masked/changed by the cab.
As I understand it the enhance can't be 'turned off'.. the dial will give you various mappings and colour..which is why I said the amp is inherrently coloured. The 4 band para is very powerful..but again there is your colour if you switch that in. The timbre can be dialed zero'ed..but it is also arguable whether that is flat. This is no different to a whole host of other amps that have filters or internal mapping or bias controls or whatever you wish to call them. Unless you can turn them off or disable them... you aren't getting 'flat'.. and that is without fetting what colour you cab or pickups may do. and don't even think about the effects chain..????? Does flat mean the sound of your bass's acoustic sound amplified..? to some it might, others have their own definition. My most neutral and best, as it happens.., sounding amp has quite basic and sutble EQ but if the bass doesn't sound good in the first place... there is not a lot I can do to affect it. Fortunately, I love the way it works. I also like my TF amp as a backup but the sound is different and more mechanical by comparison. If I didn't have them A/B'd I'd be less aware of the difference... but that is why we A/B.. Personally, I don't think flat is the holy grail anyway... you go with the sound that pleases you however you get it.. but KISS in the signal chain is not a bad way to start..
15. I don't think personality means that at all... it has nothing to do with the wellbeing or somesuch of the player, it is how they approach a line they are going to play. They may have a specific groove or touch on everything they play... it defines them and it is pretty much what gets them the work. Some players have this in spades...and Pino P is a case in point when he became known. He was stylistically defined..and in a good way... everyone wanted what he did... but what some people get hired for is less apparent...but basically they get work for what they can bring to the party...and the people who want a servive/player either buy into it or they don't. This is why requests for session work is so funny... at a certain level of competance, everyone can play notes in a certain order it is that litte extra that makes the difference. When you go from one good player to another... the basics are covered..hopefully.. but you are getting another spin. This is why Band leaders of all kinds change round the band as it is a way to breathe new life or get a new spin on the same old back catalogue they they will be required to play. The classic story of Steely Dan rotating their bands wasn't so much an A band and a B band... it was the chemistry of the unit that worked and ended up on the track. You may have had a few players on triple A scale and some on a lesser fee ... but that alone wasn't enough to define what worked when.. They could all play..and some.. but they were looking for that little extra.. for whereever they could get it.
16.
The TF can be coloured but it also can be very flat, just a mather of settings.
How would you do that?
17.
Why should the dep pay towards rehearsal costs, if a band has rehearsal costs it is quite obvious the depp is a fair few pegs higher up and does not need to rehearse. You would expect to pay someone of that calibre equally or possibly a bit more.
How would you know..?? If you are talking standards then no one rehearses them, anyway.. We wouldn't expect a dep to pay for a rehearsal but some gigs aren't a busk.... What you might get away in a pub is one thing.... but other gigs will need work.
18. We offer the dep a fee that we are happy to pay... it is up to them if they take it. If we need to bump up the pub money to make them happy, it will come out of the kitty which we have all paid into. The dep will get decent money anyway...but for the big payers..they will get less as the kitty needs to be fed. If I am doing a dep..I either take the gig or I don't.
19.
I wouldn't buy a Berg or a GB to replace my S12T and not because of the volume but because of the tone. Clarity and uncoloured, Berg and GB aren't quite like that, close, but...!
Your amp is very coloured... not that it makes it good or bad, just that the TF is a very tonally coloured amp, IME.
20.
We don't want to turn this thread into Rush Wars, but I honestly have no idea why you would come to this conclusion. Hating their music is perfectly fine, saying they are dead from the neck down (sic - I think you mean 'up'), have no musicality or personality is, frankly, a massive sack-full of diseased bollocks mate.
I have come to this conclusion because they are dead from the neck down in a musical sense. There is no finesse or playing there..just notes...no panache, no zip, no nothing.. You can watch 30 mins of the show and know every move they would make..and there would be no musical surprises. If it meant 'up' that would mean they have some sort of cerebral use ...but I use the word 'down'. as nothing they do could get the body parts moving.. As you say, don't wish to derail a good thead otherwise..
21. Love the look of Bergs but I wonder how much better, if at all, the new NEO's will be over the discontinued AE's. I think I would like better the ceramics in the style of the HD/AE or CN cabs.
22.
I'm not a big fan at all but that is just nonsense...
I would worry if anyone holds them up as any type of musical standard bearer.
23.
You mean you don't like what they do. To say what you have said is a highly surprising misjudgement coming from an experienced musician.
I know we are going to have to agree to disagree, N.... but dead from the neck down, I'm afraid...IMO. It isn't so much that I didn't 'like' the Sky footage but there was just no soul or music in the players. Polished and professional and honed...and an all-round show.. but no playing..just licks and time honoured 'stuff' churned out. I must say that I never took to them when they first came out...and if the Sky Arts show that is any sort of pinnacle ..and Rush fans would know far better than I would in that regard, then ..well, words fail me. I wont say anymore... so lets move on..
24. But Rush are a band TOTALLY devoid of musicality and personality. IMO..!! If ever a band went thru playing by numbers it is these guys...if the Snakes and Arrows Sky Arts shows are typical..?? I had the misfotune to watch far more of that TV show than I should have...recently..!!
