Can only speak as you find... I've used the 810 which was wolly but I would be prepared to concede that that may be down to having a hard life as a rental unit....???? Used their top range...I assume.. amp and I didn't like the EQ on it and it didn't work at all well with SWR Goliath cabs. Awful, IMO. Loved a litte 250w 15" combo that I had to hire....so much so, I offered to buy it. Not surprisingly, the unit earnt the guy money and was always out on hire so he didn't want to sell.

Why do you want to know what gear your heroes use?

I think that players certainly do care about what kit they are using... I had a chat with one relatively recently and he knew tone INSIDE out. If you don't have a great sound, you wont get the gig at the level they are playing and also you can have engrs and techs spend hours and days on their kit should they need it. They may plug into whatever is available but they will certainly unliug pdq if it doesn't work.. -
If you still have them let us know the cab size and I'll see if I can make some suggestions. Neo is just the magnet by the way, it doesn't have a 'sound', that depends upon which model.
I don't have them, otherwise I would have taken up this kind offer, but thanks. I made the same mod as quite a few others and they liked the outcome... I didn't, and thought the original PAS drivers sounded much better. It was an SWR cab, of course. I was not able to A/B them tho. I understand the use of NEO...but I have never been bowled over by the sound of the cabs that use those chassis. I can't explain it, but MarkB, G&K, Ampeg, EM 2510's, Berg, ..offf the top of my head all had NEO's and altho I still use the Bergs, they are relegated to B rig, the other cabs I was quite happy not to use them again. As I say, not at all scientific, just I feel something is missing with the cabs...which happen to be NEO...???? It is the same with Class D...they will all make a pleasing sound to varying degrees, but it isn't the sound I would want given the other choices I have. So, it is not all about the carry for me... If I say so myself, my sound is regarded as good by others...even with the NEO rig but the one that gets people coming up after the gig and raving is a heavy old rig. The whole place can hear and feel it...which pisses me off if I think I was crap that night...!!!!
Ashdown ABM500 combo, Betsy, and a Bill Nash precision..
There you go... with a graphite type neck, IIRC..??
Cool When you were playing bass for Bryan Ferry on Dylanesque what rig and bass did you use?
That was good...imagine it was an old Ampeg B type thing..?? With Andy Newmark... great guy.

IIRC.... The traditional EQ on a MM was +15db on the bass, boost only, and +-15db on the treble.. If you maxxed out the controls you'd have that awful typical MM sound. Most actives suffer like this as well... and if go to the extremes the sound is unusable, pretty much. I don't think the bass in itself is the problem, maybe the amp and cab don't cut well but I would start with the 2 gtrs. This config is always an issue and even more so with half stacks and humbuckers. They will have to learn to band EQ themselves for the greater good... and not blanket the mix with a gtr wall of sound. You'll sound better if you layer instruments to the common good,.. inc drums...and it will make things far easier ..AND quicker to set up.

I don't know these cabs but if you are used to playing 2x410, then 2x112 will be a massive drop, IMO. I don't think 2x112 do as well as a decent 410..IME... but I think it would be easier to live with the difference. The tone of the cabs is likely to be different between 10 and 12' but the biggest factor would be the sheer amount of air 2x410 push out.. There is no easy way round that... FWIW.. I use 2x112 and 2x210 from other makers and the 410 arrangement wins hands down. To the point that I would swap out the 2x112 for other 12's...as I like the footprint and the sound loss is acceptable over 410's...but it is still a compromise.

Wow.... there is NO way a MM bass should struggle in this regard. If there is anything about them, it is that the EQ can cut glass.

I changed the speakers in a cab..because I couldn't get replacements.. and I used 2510's I don't think this worked in my case. Whether this just wasn't a great match or whether I just don't like NEO, I am not sure, but I liked the cab with the original speakers far more.
I have various dance routines worked out, but a constant lack of space on stage forbids me to perform them.
yeah... right. Must use that one

I don't have it in an obvious way, but I hope I am watchable..in my own way. However, we are using a drummer who has it in massive doses.. How we will cope, I don't know but I am looking forward to it... We wil probably have to pay for it, as well.........

another thing about networking... Take a look at things like Linkedin... I could point out ( more than ) a few complete disasters ... and that is putting it kindly.. who have cost a company I know of, millions... and to read their profile, you'd think they'd saved the world... It would be funny, if it wasn't so (fraudulent ) serious.
............ 99% of the bands I've played with I've joined after they've seen me play...................... That's why I think networking is a critical skill for a musician.
Indeed... and when you are talking to people that you don't know, it is important that the standards and goals match up.... so the people you know may be known by that person and that will give them an indication that you'll be ok This is how depping matches up....and it helps when people swim in the same circles. This should take care of the playing side, then you need to sort of the character and chemistry and other stuff. Stuff like good gear and transport and reliability then kick in...

I always run my cab output higher than the amp as bass can be brutal and I like the leeway. This may be a legacy of low powered speaker wattage of old but I still think it's valid. I certainly don't want to prove that theory these days. So... if you have a 350/4 amp then I'd have 2 12" cabs if the band is loud. If you run pedals that confuses things and maybe also masks any damage being heard. For piece of mind...get a 2 x cabs set-up... 12's might do... and you have a decent carry/lift and as much power cab wise that you'll need unless you are playing stages. Altho I use 10's over all else, I wouldn't be using a single 210 for anything bar quiet gigs. Double them up and a different ball game, of course, but an expensive way to go...

This overuse of the term 'uncloured' ..?? Everything colours the sound and the bass...not least the way you tune the cab to achieve your design goals. The notion of 'flat' on some amps is nonsense to a large degree and filters and enhancers do just that... dial in or cut a dollop of EQ. Probably..and IMO..the best amps are the big heavy output stage jobs which have pretty average EQ, but frankly, they don't need much more..if your bass sounds good. That is probably as 'flat/uncoloured' as you'll get

If you are still looking, the DB is the DB's.. There is just no substitute for weight for weight in a sound... IMO. I took mine out last night... and it is too much for a pub, really...but all the musos in the crowd noticed it and loved it.
-
Depending on your definition of bright, but if you are getting more than 3 weeks or so of every day use plus gigs, then you are doing well, IMO. I don't want super bright but I don't want dull either. As soon as the character goes out of the string..and you can feel this as much as hear it, then it is time to change as far as I am concerned.
-
as is grimley inadequate.. It is quite possible for some people to throw together a unit ( literally ) and blast the place.. at a level that some bands that have been going for years, couldn't get close to. It is what it is... and you know all this anyway.
-
Grimley adequate is relative....
-
Ha ha... I'd rather hear me do it than some others..

Considering having a break from all bands, will I regret it though?
JTUK replied to SevenSeas's topic in General Discussion
Beware of burn-out. Take the fun route, you'll last longer. I can't for the life of me the point of 4 bands if it is draining you... It appears the passion is missing but you feel you MUST push on...so if you can't see the wood for the trees, make\sure it pays WELL and ditch the rest -
We have a few gears...thankfully... and that next one can come from anywhere. Sometimes we don't get out of first... but that is still good enough. IMO.

You get it when you get it. The best chance you'll have is when you put yourself into decent situations.

Hush (Kula Shaker / Deep Purple) + Audition = Confusion
JTUK replied to thepurpleblob's topic in General Discussion
True - I would normally shrug it off - but for an audition I like to remove all doubt. I'm taking the 5-string though !!!
Looks like you'll need to put them right.....You could spook the the gtr by asking him what chords he would like... That will tell you al you need to know.... -

You could use this as a lesson in transposing. If you think shapes and intervals... you don't need worry what key a song is in. Or you could use a variation of the Nashville method. All they do is line up the next section/chord relative to where you start.
