It might do if we hadn't worked on what parts he should and shouldn't play in what register. It pisses me off if he loses that 'discipline' The sub comes into it when we decide to run the kick and kit thru the P.A and then the sub helps out there with the keys as well.. We will always have a bleed there for keys anyway even using just tops.. He is a genuine piano player as opposed to one handed keyb guy ... which is great... but the trade-off is he has a great left hand. Yep...can be tricky if the brain on these guys goes awol.

Drums HAVE to find their consistant strike and volume.... and you need a good strike to make the kit sound good, IMO. It is pointless practising or soundchecking at different volumes than you gig at.. I play light and so need a lot of gain on the amp... and also a touch of compression to keep the strings more even. That way, I don't need to chase the sound ...and retain precision.
-
We will do small marquees with backline only but will introduce a sub for kick and keys. My TF550-B and 2x112 will do that. If I have more stage, I'll bring along the DB750 and DB210's as it is my preferred rig but I wouldn't put it in many pubs...not that we do many. We will spec up P.A hire for gigs over a certain size....ie, 200 plus people.

I thought the engr who got that sound into the TV recording did a pretty fine job. That scooped jazz sound can go missing but I can't say it was missing at all last night. Can't understand what people can't hear as it is all THERE, IMO.

Not the easiest thing to do.... top the bill with a disco set at a festival.. Liked it... can easily watch it again. The bass player would be on a hiding to nothing...try and nail Bernard Edwards and he would get slammed so he brings his own thing ... What is wrong with that..? BE can't be on the gig anymore.

Good build and quality, IMO. I don't find they have the extra precision of a Sei, for example, but I think they are fine instruments. Only talking about the J variants.... wouldn't recognise the others, tbh.

We don't take then generally, so only for friends or friends of friends really and local and they MUST have seen us before as we play what we play... Since they are friends, we might throw in Sex on Fire or Brown eyed girl if specifically asked for.. but other than that, we don't do requests. Last time we did BEG, if was the 1st dance.. If the price puts them off..then money is THE issue and so we want to steer clear anyway. We've found, amongst the local guys who do these sort of things, that £1600 plus for a wedding are the bookings that have dropped off these last few years. As long as the band is more than half decent, then £1000 is easiy achievable for little more than an early set-up. That is why we want to be local.. so we set up, go home and come back. You learn to cost all of these things in after a while.
-
You need people to ask you to play their weddings,. Anyone wanting to pay £500 for the band is unlikely to be the sort of wedding you'll want to do.,.. but bands are only worth what the market will bear.... You could try a few wedding showcases to see it your show gets the interest.... but weddings need a good fee as you aren't likely to be able to roll up at 7pm..

I far prefer 10's myself even though I do like the footprint of 2x112's. Maybe it is less to do with the config that the actual chassis', NEO, Ceramic, whatever but the fact remains that I am not sold on any of the 15" or 12's I've used. and I haven't heard anyone else that convinces me either. It is just the way it is...

The Mazda 6 has a ton of room in the back and can still be pretty nippy in the 185 Sport version. The seats go down well and the hatch makes it almost as much room as a small estate. It thinks it is a 3 series or some sort, but it really isn't....but the hatchdoor makes up for quite a bit. I fill it up with a full kit, bass rig and 2 basses and lights..
With some high end cabs, I always wonder what happens if you have driver issues; can you recone them or replace them like for like without hassle? At least with my cabs, I know exactly how to fix them, if I ever blow them up!
Not sure how easy it is to recone them or get them reconed...it depends if the cones kits are available. This might write off the chassis quicker than anything else. I've had PAS drivers go down and you can't get the kits..and I tried pretty hard. The only option was to source an alternative which takes a lot of research or knowledge and you are lucky that on this site you have a couple fo guys who can likely point you in the right..or less wrong direction and save your cab...but it is still a leap of faith to a degree, IMO. The recone deal might apply to quite a few OEM chassis' if the volume produced is not large. I was lucky when a GS112 went as it was on warranty, the cab was current..and therefore, so was the chassis... so the only problem was waiting for the shipment to come from the U.S. I sourced one SH on here, anyway..so still have that as spare, so that is a nother ..albeit less likely, option..that someone will have cpare and decent units to sell.. The only thing you can really do is get to know your kit and what stresses it will put up with and then don't push it beyond that... If a driver goes through fatigue..then that is hard luck but if you try and squeeze more out of it than it will give, then don't be surprised it it breaks. Any non current cab failure is going to give you hassle getting a replacement and there are quite a few degrees of hassle, IME, from no chance to closest match, but the newer the model the better. IMO. This is why..in time honoured fashion... I over rate the cab by some way against the power output of the amp. You can say you are never pushing the amp to its max... but just take that as a bonus and more watts..for want of a better way of bracketing it all... that are spare... You may think it is easy to use your ears but chances are when the cab breaks, volumes are likely to be pretty high anyway..and you may not be hearing the best anyway.. And if you use distortion or some other effects...good luck with hearing breakup anyway..!!! The issue of special, clever and wonderful bespoke cabs for certain cab makers might sound exclusive but then you almost certainly are going to have to go back through them to get your chassis repaired or reconed as not many makers will actually want to tell you what driver your unit is based on.. for various reasons.

[sup]Prices are pretty keen on here and everyone knows what they want to pay so not sure it is that good a place for seliing...[/sup] [sup]Not that I sell anything,... [/sup] [sup]It is good for specialist stuff... as you simply don't come across it elsewhere ...but for general you can source elsewhere.[/sup] [sup]and at better prices. Maybe the fee has had an impact there as well.[/sup] [sup]£20 to a 'trader' is nothing spread across a good few items..so £7.00 per single item doesn't sound so bad...but that still means [/sup] [sup]it has to sell through this medium.. [/sup] [sup]Talking to a regular selller, they said they had all but given up selling here as the low balls were ridiculous or tedious as best....[/sup] [sup]as in what part of the add did you NOT understand....!!! ONO means a near offer, for example.[/sup] -
I recall carrying a SWR 410 Goliath ll up those stairs a good few times....and that would been around '93, maybe..

I change them when they go..which is anything from 2 weeks onwards...but 6 weeks max. Since I gig two basses, they are set up the same so I can probably get more time out of them if I need to. My current sets are Newtones and they come very clean out fo the pack..something I noticed that changed with my other regular brand, so these will clean up ok..or have done so far. I do think fatigue will kill the string after a while and the max re-cleans I've been able to get has been 5 changes. This needs very careful restringing as you can get weak points. Also, you have to be careful how the strings settle into the bridge as again, you can promote stress points. Any strings that don't clean up well, get binned ( which is why I moved from DR ) as you can't have an unbalnaced set..and I never change just the one..always a set. The packs cost about £30 per set per 5 st... and I have 3 sets of Newtones sitting around waiting to go on...so I have done well to make the sets last. What with rotation and new orders, I generally don't have to buy more that 3-6 per year. With the festival season coming up...I find strings can go off a bit quicker when outside... I wouldn't say I am hard at all on strings and I keep them clean without being anal about it.. My second bass..which I practice on, has strings that need changing but my preamp/comp pedal keeps them from being useless, but I will change the strings for the weekend and the next run of gigs.
Dunno if it's still going (been a heck of a long time!) but there used to be a venue on the cromwell road. Was called the Orange, but later changed to West One Four. Probably a sainsbury's or something now
That brings a few memories..was often down there early 90's.. and was indeed the Orange Club at the time

How does the kick sound acoustically..??
-
Again..depends how you play.. Are you someone who stretches what you are trying to do so needs to right on top of it every gig...or do you not pick the bass up between gigs and just stick to what you do... If the latter, then that is the easiest approach to being consisant... if you're the former. you need to be warmed up and regularly practiced.
I would agree. I have said the same thing. Of course, to be a business they'd still need to work out what they were selling.
You have a group of people with a huge knowledge base... that attracts more people...there is a FS board which attracts more and you have the numbers to be a target for adverts....which you can charge for. You might even start selling a few things... ? It isn't an immediate return but if you branch out into associated sites..?? -

I don't begrudge it but there are two things here... a benevolent community thing or a potential business. I don't think you can be both so sooner or later it is make up your mind time. As it is, the site needs to be self funding and after that, the thinking will be priofit making... IMO. No problem with that and then people can form their own views about where to stay, pay join or whatever but if it is a busniess, just say so...if/when the time comes. -
It really depends how and what you play....
Thanks for your explanation it really helped me to understand cabs a little more. I currently own the following cabs - - Epifani UL 210 cab - Epifani UL 410 cab - Epifani UL 112 cab , all are 8 ohm, series 1. My faviorate "all round" cab is the 410. The 210 is a great cab for the size & weight but not quite as full sounding as the 410. I do run the 410 & 210 together for bigger gigs but when I do , it feels like the 210 cab is struggling compared to the 410 if that makes sence. I do prefer the tones of the 410 so maybe i should look for another 410 cab ?
Depends how low you can run the impedance of the amp...and if you can go to 2ohms, then I'd get another Epi 1 210... and then you are truly modular. Maybe the 112 and 210 are pretty simillar or arther cover the same gigs so you could sell the 112 and have 2x210 and/or 410 in the rig. The amp would have to do 2 ohms thnough...or for a killer big rig, slave the second cab with a power amp driven by your main amp.

The thing about fees is that people ask what the money is going on. If the site costs X, and they raise X+Y through fees...where does the extra money go..? Whose is it (money ) o do as they will..? The site raise X-Y, then how do you know that..? Is the aim to make money... cover costs only..?? Is it a club..?? what are the member benefits etc etc What is the site worth... and what is the value of the knowledge that people contribute freely in a communial sense..?? I think the owners have been pretty low key is requesting money to run the site...which is a good thing, generally, but the question of a fee brings with it a lot of questions and maybe the need for more openess. I think this sort of issue comes to every forum once it reaches a certain size with certain costs. If you have blanket fees, do you want to publish accounts..?? There will be people who will want to pay the fees and people who wont...?? The best I can suggest is a sum published of how short the contributions are in regard to running costs...so you have a donation blitz as it were. Anything more than that might prompt questions being asked about how much the adverts generate, bla bla... As I say..how far do you want to go with all this...??
