1.
But loads of people are buying and selling amps and cabs to find their tone, what a massive gaff that is, and damn expensive, troublesome and time consuming. I love programming patches anyway, I love getting great sounds that inspire me and suit the music. What about people who need different sounds for different songs, and different bands?
I use a GT10-b and it is isn't bad. It isn't a total solution as it is plan A and then nothing. And do I think it is better than my A rig anyway... not a chance, but that is just me. People want to know my bass is there... not on the track, but IN it... and they want to play with it..and me vice versa..and then ditto, the band. Would I put that down to chance and turn up to a gig and hope it will alright on the night..? This is why I'll be talking to the P.A beforehand, but again...you need to know what they say is true, not what they want you to hear. I generally get round this by telling them we want the whole band through the monitors and then that seems to focus a few things.. I think the best performances we give tend to come when we have a very good stage sound and everyone is adapting the parts on the fly... as that way we all connect the best. That is the juice, for me.
2. Amp modelling is ok but as flawed as any other thinking. It is an AWFL lot of work to refine something to suit...otherwise you are taking a complicated feed and hoping for the best one size fits all, and especially if you use a few effects. It really depends on your monitoring though, at the end of the day. If you get decent signals back and to the rest of the band, then it can work. if you don't, or have less than 4 mixes.. you are asking for trouble. Plus you need more time to get the mon mix right..so for these multl bills with a rushed turnround, I wouldn't touch it. Also, it depends how much playing the band actually does... if you push the boat out a few times..you will need the other guys to be able to get on board...
3. Not much help, I'm afraid, but two things struck me. You play so hard that your hand is giving you problems already.. This is NOT good long-term..so I'd be looking to break this cycle. I'd turn to standard tune _ down a tone -and maybe use a heavy gauge so you could still fight it hard... but also, you should be looking to lessen the strain on your hands.with adjusting your technique. This means that once you get used to the new tuning and lighter touch on playing you will have to transpose everything at the writing stage if you use any sort of charts or notes. If you don't then it is just learning the song in another position and no biggie... but you will need to be able to reconcile your tune with the gtrs... so the notes you play relate to what the gtrs play. I think you have to change tuning as this current regime isn't sustainable.. so your B = gtr C# and you have to think the tone differnce al the time.. You will get used to it... I wouldn't get involved with a capo... but someone might have a case for it...
4.
I've been considering going into my MXR-80+, thence to desk plus taking a secondary line out to a smallish cab & head as an on-stage monitor. I wonder what an engineer would do if I just turned up with my bass & the MXR-80? Do the foldback speakers handle tha\t sort of thing? G.
You need to know the spec of the P.A..and how many mixes they have to give. If you turn up with just a Di feed, then you are at the mercy of the engr giving you back a sound. The FOH would be taken care of..you'd hope. Would I turn up at a gig with a P.A and engr I don't know without a backline... Not a chance ...!!! How much volume does the band need onstage...?? will your monitoring cover it...? Is the drummer..or anyone else happy playing against nothing..if they can't hear you..? How do you expect to sound good in this case anyway..? Music is all about ears and hearing... so the musicians need to hear it.. IME.
5. SWR and a Jazz..... was a time when it didn't get any better...but SWR maybe don't make those amps anymore altho they kind of do SM clones but things move on. I would say my old SWR gear has been superceded by Aguilar in terms of a new take on a sound. And the Aguilar DB is the new Ampeg...better made and better all round kit, IMO.
6. I am bemused by the best live music pub in a student city failing..?? Out of all the towns round here.... Canterbury is an oddball.. and I don't know any bands that play there in the pubs. Kent Beer Fest, ( althu the music is certainly secondary ) St Peters, The Marlow, of course and anything Kings get involved in seem to do ok.... and then there is the University... but something doesn't stack up..?? Maybe there is too much going on..??
7. All of them at the mo'....... ..
8. Just wondering if anyone had any educated guesses for what power generator draw for a typical 5kw P.A plus decent lights. The stage is 40x20ft. The P.A is 5kw plus 2k monitoring. The lights will be a gantry with projector and vertical hazers to flood and wash the stage size. I haven't got the final detail of the light spec atm... so I suppose a ball park figure for the power draw. The P.A crew say 40kva should be 'ample' but the organisers had kittens when I passed this detail on.. and said they have never needed more than 15kva. Not my remit, I know, but it is in our interests to help out if we can. Post your thoughts and experiences, please... Thanx
9. You don't have much choice but to wait it out. If the desire returns then fine, if it doesn't there isn't much you can do. If it were me, I would keep one bass.... just in case.
10. Michele's MILFY mates
11.
this is how you end up with a big female audience following when you do plenty of pink songs
MMM's............
12. As a jobbing bass player, you may find you HAVE to take gigs that you might not really want.... and like it or not, the Mumford gig would go well on the C.V, for sure. Depending what you earn and what you have to earn, you may have to think about filling x number of months a year with good payers.
13. I've said I don't really get what they do... but if the job came up and I could see the way where is would add up to something then I might go for it. I would probably certainly do a tour.... depending what the figures were and all the rest.... and I could say that about quite a few positions. You would have to know how the music worked for you... but, in theory..?? Trouble is..you have to get offered the gig
14. Watching on TV he was on stage with Alburn and I turned over. Went back when he changed his band... but still couldn't stay with it. Not sure if that was me not giving it a fair go ..but I did tune back in quite a few times and nothing stuck. Maybe I missed some good bits...???
15. I never know the lyrics of a song but every so often some will resonate. I don't see my role in a band as lyrical... that is not to say that people can write any old drivel for lyrics tho.. As with a lot of things, you only notice these things when they are REALLY bad. I wouldn't push this view in front of a songwriter tho...
16.
That's fair opinion. Thing is, it could be applied to almost any sort of music and certainly (in my opinion) anything rap, metal, thrash, punk etc.
yep..oldgitsRus..
17.
? Charlie carries it, IMO.
and it is a mess... for good or bad, that is the Stones. I wouldn't expect anything different
18. I watched a few tracks on Iplayer.... and it was the Stones that you always get. You are never going to get anything unless you sacked Charlie and have a proper MD and show. Running everything off the whim of the gtr is a recipe for disaster that even the top sidemen can struggle with. It is the Stones...always have been ..always will be...don't expect anything else. People still buy their tickets. The one man who earnt his money was Jagger..IMO..considering the other two can hardly stand up..
19. I tried to watch as much footage on the festival as I could, but I couldn't stay interested in this act.. Nothing there..as far as I could tell... so I have no idea how they could headline. I wasn't knocked out with Womack either... and I toggled between the channels to try and stay with it...but at least they didn't keep me up ..either of them.. Sunday night smacked of the fest knew people would start the long drive home early and that was reflected in the acts not really being 'headline'..IMO..?? So, for me..a bit of a anti-climax..but then I was back home watching it on tele..
20. Whenever I think I hear them,...it could be anybody as far as I know ..I can't stay interested enough to give them a proper go.. I think it is them as I expect to hear their hit...but I may be wrong as they all seem to sound the same. Apart from that...and spawning a zillion others in their wake, ..they do seem to be a sweaty bunch and that is most un-folk like..??
21. First port of call is the Gallery and BassGear. Then after that GAK, Andertons or Mansons possibly. Then it is an internet search... Strings direct from Newtone and I'll always ask my local music store if they can do something.
22.
Actually just heard the madonna cover on the radio and the bass sounded better than on the tv, still not Ray good but much better
ah ..peace..!!
23. Talking about people past their sell-by date... currently really enjoying Kenny Rogers on BBC2 When he first came on..I thought, oh er... a bridge too far... but no, the boy warmed up and delivered. His voice may be faltering but he had the crowd in the palm of his hand... You can see why he is a 'great'....
24. no probs Steve, You guys are sounding good so it was a pleasure. As for our gigs.... hmmmm, something missing. Tonight was ok..one of better most recent ones. Not where we wanted to be with some bigger shows coming up. Both outdoor marquees have been hardwork, band-wise.
25. Just as well he didn't use one. Things move on and MM basses don't get the gig these days
