Stay out of pubs as tributes don't tend to do so well there... but there is a circuit that can sustain tribute bands, IMO.. which is why original bands tend to think, IME, that tribs are killing music...but then they'd probably say that about cover bands as well, even if they happen to play in one..

Some of them are quite a workout

Bassist Wanted Ad on JMB - shows the mentality of some people
JTUK replied to Sean's topic in General Discussion
.............. The fact remains that bass is probably the easiest instrument to get to gig level on imo.
I agree with the sentiment but the thing about bass players is that they have to pretty much play all the song, and the all the others as well, so there is no hiding place. But sure, many bass players have the minimum competence in their band in quite a lot of bands that I see. And they get away with it, because some people don't want /require them to have much more..?? -
can't get my head round this 'version' of bi-amping..
Great advice guys, thanks. Will go and test with 2 x 102P's. Sounds like the way to go....... Thanks again
That's what I'd do, if I already liked the cab, no question

Things that should be easy ... but aren't ... why?
I play for enjoyment only. There are only eight main Beatles albums, and I'd be revising modern bass playing as it was developed.
Only a small snapshot of it though, I say. Fine if you are a fan of the Beatles but passing by a lot of other 'great' stuff -
Rush?
As in, bad band, great bass player..??

"nice" mint green pickguard for Jazz... where from?
JTUK replied to mcnach's topic in General Discussion
If you plate is a perfect fit, I'd send it as a template as well... this is what Sims do well, but then it is a custom plate made for that particular gtr. -
A lot of drum kits sound poor acoustically and this is down to the guy that tunes them for the mst part so as soon as they go thru a P.A, that is the one thing that you have make sound good aprt from the vocals. Everything else is roughly there altho bass can be a pig if the bass player hasn't got his sound down.. If the P.A is tuned in and the core band mixes well without FOH, then mixing should be a breeze as you are just amplifying decent core sounds..it is when you get into fights and have to EQ everything that it all gets a bit fraught... but for big stages, I leave it to people who know their kit.. When you find a good soundman, you keep him as there are a lot of jokers about, IMO..!!

I had the same quest with a tort guard and in the end I went to Sims. But if you are doing this by picture, you have got to be sure it will be what you want. Tort is hard as some of it is sooo red and really doesn't work, IMO, but Sims don't deal in such tat... I'd start there.... -
I see lots of mismatched bands..who only have one thing going for them. Typically the gtr is great but the vocals aren't upto it... or..?? I think equal care should be taken to keep the level consistant for all members and if the level is a good local level, you pretty much will have one of the best local bands straight out of the box.. So, you try and do that in what ever talent pool you swim in..?? and this is why I don't let gtrs run a band...
I'm desperately looking for a sight reading drummer for a production of Man of La Mancha in Epsom next week. Band call is this Sunday morning 22nd Feb at 10, the other calls are Wednesday 25th to Saturday 28th Feb at 7:30. We pay £35 per call so £175 in total. I know it's no notice but is there anyone who could help?
Neil Burton, he is from down your way.

The problem with that approach, IMO, is that no one else gets any bass....unless you have decent bass monitors.. so the band aren't and can't be playing with each other.
In a studio with lots of layering and autotune she might be alright but live I think she's terrible
Only saw her on the TV at the Glastonbury gig... that seemed quite a show. How much help she had, I don't know but then she wouldn't be alone in that..by any means.

I'd have a lot more time... rather than none... for what he says if he wasn't involved with that shining light of artistic talent Kim whatshername.
To quote Motorhead "Everything louder than everything else" I think the problem is we tend to use smaller amps with tiny speakers for practice, tiny speakers struggle to deliver much in the way of bass so quiet practice on a small amp will never deliver the balls of a big gig set up
Wasn't that Ian Paice of Deep Purple, 'Made in Japan'..?

Not sure why you'd want to learn whole albums of the Beatles. This strikes me as quite limiting and quite time consuming... and everything has moved on by some considerable distance by now. Not saying you shouldn't have a nod to what they did back then, but apart from being in a Beatles trib band, I don't see what you'll really gain from it. -
Can't you find someone who could retro block and bind the neck...?
-
A couple of school friends got gtrs and were more advanced so when I picked one up I couldn't keep up... but I also heard low notes as well, and never wanted to do anything else. To this day, I just hear things just a little more than normal, IMO. None of the guys I started with still play..and some of them never ever gigged.

Keep working at it Froggy, and put the time in. You wont notice week 1 and week 2, but you will notice things at some point and it is all building blocks. If you don't do anything else, do an hour a day of solid driven exercises witha goal in mind but don't beat yourself up on it..too often, too much. Just enough to care but not enough to drive you into the ground and give up. My formative years were were wearing out albums up in my bedroom but there are far 'better' learning tools that that these days. Keep the lessons going if you feel the teacher is giving something back.
Its more the muscles in the forearm that are the problem, but I'll keep an eye on it.
I always think things like that are just a degree of bass playing fitness, in that you are playing something that is new and therefore you tire more easily..
-
I prefer rear ports myself...not a fan of shelved ports so tuck them away at the back is fine by me if it keeps the dims down.

I use a 212 and sometimes I'll put a 210 on top and this is my preferred rig. The 210 just has the extra bite I like but I have no problem if just the 212 is on the gig. For overkill, I could go 212 plus 2x210 but haven't felt the need so far. I do like/prefer the idea of 410 but that unit is 90-100lbs against the 70 or so of the 212. My compromise is 2x210... so I can mix and match what I want. I'll probably still go for a lightweight 2x112 mini rig as well The 10's tend to bite better...with no loss of bass and the 212 is fuller all round... If weight isn't the issue, I'll always add a 210 to it.
