It's reasonable pop music. Job done, it made them rich?
I'd take it. When a single reasonably successful hit from the 80's still makes the writer £20k a year in royalties, that puts Noel G's output into perspective.

Bass Player Live discussion - how the industry has changed
JTUK replied to louisthebass's topic in General Discussion
Wow, Larry Klein hung my computer.... or did he just send it to sleep. Thankfully MM was there to wake it up -
We did a show with an Oasis tribute band who did it quite well, but we were surprised when they came off after about 50 mins or so and we had to extend our set to cover. They said they couldn't have played much more anyway and that was when I realised that Oasis didn't have that many good songs to listen to...

I saw this some time ago. Recently saw Glaub with Jackson Brown but I liked his chat..especially when he named a major artist calling him fo a tour and he said he didn't want to do it. He must have worked at a time when they made very decent money Goes well with the other thread about how much the big gigs pay these days.. -
I think he comes across quite decent on the Voice..but then most of the judges do, IMO..with just the right amount of 'humble' when breaking up someones dreams..

I believe the Athens gig was a substantial part of 'So' and the O2 gig was the 25th aniiversary. We may have been too far back in the arena and it was being DVD'd so there was a lot of gee-ing up the audience but apart from the guys at the front going 'nuts' the rest of the crowd seemed underwhelmed. I went because I wanted to see the 'classic' band line-up but yes, walked out thinking how on earth are they going to make a good DVD out of that. I wanted to like it...which is why I went.. but not a memorable gig by any means and the O2 didn't help, maybe. None of the crowd we went with really said much about it and that is not a good sign either. I don't think it was just me...for sure. -
I'm always fascinated about what works and why... I'd not be that fussed about an 80's band or a 70's band myself but I think they'd do ok in pubs. The problem is getting out of them. £250 will be paid without many questions being asked but it is harder to get popular and generate better fees, IMO. 80's pub bands round here would struggle to get £500 at other gigs. Nobody would pay that for gtr bands, generally.

I'd check it out with the TKS range ...as they tend to do ceramic units in lightweight boxes. I'd stick with 12's but the 15 boxes also sounded very good indeed and I am not generally a 15 fan. Ask Bassgear what demo line they have in stock.. I'd always be looking to pair a big block with ceramics.

Never did it for me.. I groaned when someone suggested a number of theirs... At least Oasis had a couple of great songs that would stand up 20 years later...

I was watching the Gabriel Athens gig on Sky the other day and also went to see Gabriel at the O2 last year and I came away from both with the thought that Gabriel has some pretty awful filler in his gigs, IMO. So, whilst I am no Genesis fan, at least they are more immediate and listenable for the most part. In that regard, I can understand why the breakabout units are a bit sour as they don't seem to occupy the best popular period. If you consider Gabriel and to a lesser degree, Hackett, the talent, and I'm not sure about Hackett myself, then the 'watered' down Genesis eclipsing them is a bit gauling..and then for Collins to go on and have his career as well, might well and truly put a few faces out..?? -
Personally, if your body can take it, it is generally a no brainer for me. A big block just has that real authority so I like to hear the weighty magnets kick in. Same applies for cabs.. ceramic over NEO. IMO.

I'd be wary of pushing a 210 hard. I've used one but only with decent FOH and it did ok, but I don't think you can push 210's as hard as 212's all things being equal..so it wouldn't do loud gigs, IMO
I`m with Moo3h on this one, I did the same, just a half-turn on the saddle screws on the bridge but it makes - or seems to - the notes more distinct. I still need to get some fret-buzz/rattle though, so I can`t raise them too high, so eq is the next bit. Less bass as per JTUK, I have mine flat, very seldom I boost the bass, if the amp isn`t bassy enough at a venue I`ll cut the highs rather than boost the lows.
Just come back from a gig where the bass player had a Warwick type bass with twin humbuckers and played with a pick.. Totally awful indestinct sound..!!! Last night bass player had a Rickenbacker 4001 and ran that with too much bass. Conclusion was that was the only way they could play the lines but it was toneless City...and also made it very hard for them to fathom a bandmix as the bass on the bass came over as way too loud. so the guys really needed to work on their dynamics... but with +12bd or thereabouts running off the bass or thru the amp... tone is pretty much unachievable.. Its all bass and blubber -

Clean up you left and right hands so the notes you hear have a degree of expression rather than too much EQ. For example, some bass players can't play a note without excessive bass and that will rob your sound of all character. So learn to pay with a lot less bass and you will have more personality in your sound and then you can work it into your playing. -
Im working on bass clef reading That link of yours seems to be in same key as first link posted above
FCS...don't play it like that... but yes, the key appears the same ...but also my link had the backing track as well as the chords so it wouldn't have hurt to move the song around keys a bit. It will get thrown as you in different keys, no doubt, at some point.
I'm a learner and I have to start with easier material It's for an open mic night
ok... fair enough. It is a good exercise in training your ear for the intervals and changes though so maybe if there was a chord chart you could find and then follow that and a yourtube demo song..assuming the song is in the same key. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VekCiejJuDU I don't like the above type of 'charts' as it takes no account into the bar time but you could play the root notes and then add a walking pattern when you know the chords. You'll find when you educate your ear that songs like this are playable without any real work as you can hear the way the song will change and you can drop straight in on request...hence my busking comment. I think it is the goal to try and get to ..in time, or learn to read it. No one is going to have the tab for this but they may have dots, on a gig.

Best way to buy, IMO... as long as you have the money. Turn up, like it muchly, and like it enough to commit there and then. Job done.

Basses either have a good or bad sound, so an amp can't really do that much altho I do believe most people's sound problems are because they are asking the bass to do something it can't do and therefore they fight the inherrent sound too much. The tone stack is a series of complimentary choices that enhance and you can't correct a wrong turn at a later stage in the signal, IMO.. as that just muddles the water. I tend to prefer pure signal chains for this reason..
Yes, what IS that? The thinking seems to be that if you have a 5-string bass you're somehow going to play too many notes and what's worse, probably not shut up, stand at the back and play roots and fifths like I want you to so that my great guitar skilz can come to the fore, thanks very much please.
But there are gtrs out there that actually think this... you don't have to look far to know who they are, IME.
JT, with these statements you are surprising us ..............
Also, on a serious note, I think it is a great marketing idea... Sign up a load of guys on your fav forum and extend the 'mantra' and 'fanboi' base and increase sales here as well. Can't do the local presense any harm at all, so good basic sales technique... I'm sure it will fly...
Looking to replace the basic Eminence 15" driver in an Ampeg cab. What would you chaps recommend? Thanks.
Sounds to me that you want to keep the Ampeg branding but upgarde the sound. Risky business for certain reasons as alluded to above. If Budget isn't a concern could you not go through the Ampeg range for the lightweight versions. Or, is branding isn't an issue, get a a CN212 as your one cab solution. But..altho Berg have bass player kudos, maybe it wouldn't cut it on a 'stage' gig...??
