1. I started on a 4/4 bass which I didn't realise until I really got into it. I sold it on and moved to a 3/4 which has been a bit easier when it comes to sharing / borrowing basses. I'd stay in my comfort zone from now on in.
2. My band with the indie deal has a webpage that cost a few hundred and my knockabout band has a free site where we paid a few quidd for the domain name. I think the expensive site looks good but is a real battle to upload new information (designed by a computer programmer who forgets we're all simple musicians). The other band literally has all of 2 pages and serves a purpose. I agree that in an age of Twitter and Facebook they are less essential but both direct people to see us on the various social networking sites, can sell merch and have the capacity to capture those who don't tweet etc. I think they are a good idea. Googling cheap easy band sites or similar should get you started.
3.
Really? I don't remember it being all that much better than BGM is now. It too had its share of editorial bloopers and smelling pistakes, and fixations with certain manufacturers.
It just caught my imagination at the time and it was pre-online days so I remember sending off for ashtray covers etc that were advertised in the back. I'm sure I view it through rose tinted spectacles like a few others here.
4. These threads never get too far before someone mentions the early 90s when Bassist magazine broke off from Guitarist.... so I will, what a great magazine! I stopped my BGM subscription and the very next issue they had Lee Rocker on the cover and I kept forgetting to pick a copy up. That aside I really don't miss it. One article in over a year doesn't really justify it for me.
5.
Ronan Keating I'll get me coat...
Robbie Williams if we can continue this exercise in barrel scraping!?!
6. I don't know about "even more" famous but the Brian Setzer Orchestra did pretty well after the Stray Cats.
7. I don't think there is a definitive one but I like the old school looks of a bassman, an Ampeg or an Orange rig myself.
8. That feedback is very sneaky though, 100% in the last 12 months but a fair few red ones for so few transactions. I suspect he won't be happy unless this gets to a decent amount.
9. From my experience the good bands that I've been in, as a rule, naturally find the music shifts direction rather than suddenly deciding they aren't one thing and are now another. Personally I'd talk it through with them but it does rather sound like the writing is on the wall.
10.
where how?
I use Google Chrome and the ad blocker programme is free although they ask for a donation. It is good. I have to say I don't think it is *that* embarrassing - it is 2014 and people use online dating. And the other thing is this only predicts trends so you often get offered things you aren't remotely interested in.
11.
I think you'll find that these ads are served at you based on your previous browsing history on other sites. . .
They are. You can get ad blocker programmes incidentally.
12. I too went to Rudys last year and it was a pretty decent, friendly and well stocked shop.
13. Or these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Electric-Violin-Bass-Guitar-LE-MARQUIS-N-Y-LM-VB-BK-/380293726016?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item588b45bf40 always looked like they might be halfway decent
14. I was going to suggest Squier Bronco, the Gretsch Jet or an Epiphone EB0 which are all fairly inexpensive and obviously cheaper 2nd hand.
15. The Bass Doc on here can make you a custom one.
16.
Perhaps a friendly mod will nudge it into the 'general discussion'?
Done, agreed it is more suited for General Discussion
17. Having read the responses on here I'm too scared to comment
18. I heard / saw these back in 2007 on holiday in Cape Town. The buskers were amazing and sounded great. I doubt they'll rival the strat but I reckon there could be a market for these.
19. The head is still here... been a little laid back bumping this thread
20.
Disagree, there's something tragic about a band who dresses up like rock stars but play the Dog and Duck.
Guess that makes me tragic then... although at 41 I'm beyond caring what others think of how I look.
21.
The Terrortones always turn up to gigs in what we'll be wearing on stage. It makes an impression when we walk into the venue. TBH we all dress in a slightly toned-down version of our stage wear in our day to day lives...
^This^ I like a band to make an effort, even if your look is looking like you haven't. I don't care if it's punk, country, whatever the genre - put on a show
22. As said it is all subjective. I wouldn't have put myself down as a sunburst fan but I've owned some really cool looking sunburst basses. The example of PRS in the OP is personally not to my tastes but then there is a market out there for them. I think basses do look cool and sexy but over 25yrs of playing my tastes have moved around a lot. I'm back to a black body / white scratchplate look at present which is something I thought I'd never go for again.
23.
So just let me clarify... If I'm after a really clean sound I may be needing to look at something a little higher in wattage?! But if I don't mind a little bit of breaking up at higher volumes then a 15w may be the way forward?!
15w is fine. I used the Blues Jr for country (think clean tones) & never had a problem. It was a brilliant amp. I don't think mine ever went past 4 on the dial & in fact my guitarist uses it now as I've kept it going since returning to bass.
24. I had the same couple of basses for all my playing career until I got on Bassworld (the old Basschat). I guess I enjoyed buying but after a period of about 5 or 6 years where I owned an embarrassingly large amount of instruments I realised there was more to life. I have spent an age selling them off and actually downsized the £1500 Fenders for a couple of perfectly adequate / actually pretty decent Squiers. I have no plans to buy any more but still have 2 or 3 instruments that I will list on here / eBay but I've just been spectacularly lazy. I'm not one for bumping sale threads as they'll sell when they sell. It was all good fun whilst it lasted but I think GAS can be a little dangerous. I think 2007-2010 I was certainly a name associated with GAS and NBD, thankfully I would hope I am not now.
