1. I lived in Watford for 6 years back in the 90s and moved there purely for music - we were a short drive from Camden & the more local scene was great fun. Watford is great, St. Albans and Hemel all have good venues / audiences and the proximity to London was really useful. I left in 2001 to move back closer to family but found myself from 2004 - 2007 driving an hour to play with another band out that way. So yeah, it's a yes from me
2. Another big fan of Thomann. I'd wager they did label it up properly but it was damaged in transit. A pain when it's your order but comparing personal experience with Thomann & DHL I know who I trust more.
3. Either the lessons (so rare to hear people raving about them on here but they'll make you sound better than new pickups) or fess up to the other half - what's more important, bass or your relationship? The expensive bass seems fraught with danger to me at least.
4. I've done it and it wasn't a big deal, I just decided the Squier basses were perfectly decent so why have £1000s wrapped up in kit? I actually don't own a Fender bass anymore and haven't regretted it. I used the cash to go away with my girlfriend, recorded our new album on just one Squier (& an upright bass for one song) and shot the promo video on 2 Squiers which is my total bass collection these days.
5. IN - Squier Cabronita OUT - late 70s Fender Precision A very deliberate move to free up some of the cash I have tied up in gear. I now no longer own a "proper" Fender & my bass guitar collection is 2 very nice Squier basses.
6. I think the presence of Lee Rocker might mean I'll pull my finger out this year
7.
I've read a few comments from people on here and on Talkbass that they've ditched their more expensive basses (including MIA Fenders) and happily gig Squiers.
This is what I've done
8. I've transported my bass in several cars over the years but the last 3.5yrs has seen me driving a diesel Skoda Octavia Estate. I'm of that age where the Skoda was the joke car but after years of it constantly topping the car mag polls for owner satisfaction I took the plunge and it has been worth it. All that said I managed to get an upright bass in a VW Fox on a few occasions so I guess it depends where you draw the line on comfort / passengers etc.
9. I have it, just a nice book to have kicking around if you play P or J basses.
10. Those Classic Vibe Squiers are stunning so I wouldn't look to spend more. I now ONLY play Squiers having previously had £1700 basses. For the Stax sound get some flats on it and you're pretty much there.
11. In most genres the bass is a very underrated instrument so there are no doubt thousands of examples. The guy from U2 is always slated on here & whilst I'm not personally a fan, I think his playing suits the band. They'd sound really odd with Flea playing.
12. Swindon Rock n Roll band The 58 Shakes will be making their local debut at 20 at the Kings in Old Town, Swindon with our tribute to everything from Eddie to Elvis, Sun Records and beyond... Bassist Dazza14 is a member here, I'm putting down my bass to play lead guitar and our drummer Warren (who criminally isn't on here) is also a bass player! Check us out and give us a like at www.facebook.com/the58shakes and come to the gig
13.
very excited, a patient wait since the late 90's...
Typical Parcel Force Seriously though, those Danos are great fun & I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
14. I've sold everything on that wasn't getting used. I have a really nice solid top F scroll mandolin that isn't worth selling but the kids like it so it stays.
15. Funnily enough I was in the kitchen cooking dinner just yesterday & listening to Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons when I thought "that is MY definitive tone". For all the GAS induced quests for tone I found switching to flatwound strings got me in the right direction, no matter what rig I plug into.
16. I'd have paid more too. I love Squiers because they are great guitars and we lose so much competition from the snobs when buying. Teles rule too
17. He was the one of the three names I didn't know either but luckily he had the good sense to have his name written on his shirt Always nice to meet heroes when they don't disappoint.
18. Pete bought my 70s Fender P bass and did the trade in record time, paid cash and can't fault him or the transaction. Top stuff.
19. 4 PMs - sorry guys on hold and I'm operating on first come first served so I suspect this'll be gone soon.
20. Oops missed that bit off and it is important - it's a 70s Dimarzio pickup. Sounds great, typical woody thump. I used to use Seymour Duncan Antiquity range but this one was stunning s I left it alone. I appreciate the cover may be in the way but the pickup has white covers rather than the black which I thought was pretty cool.
21.
Can you tell us the weight of this?
According to my luggage scale it comes in around 9llbs.
I think I may have also seen Burrito play this a couple of years back with Case Hardin.
It was indeed the same bass... although that show was back in 2010 / very early 2011 at the latest as I was still getting over my weight from when I was ill. Time flies
22. I like country, soul, rock 'n' roll, Americana, pop, bluegrass, rock, early reggae, disco and punk but can probably think of examples of bands from all those genres that I don't personally like. I don't think that makes me a snob. And like the original post I try not to be snobby about music or gear as I hate being on the receiving end of it. My step daughter wanted some One Direction slippers and I think it's great she is getting into music. Equally I don't mind Bob the Builder and Mr. Tumble in the house either although I'll tell you for free avoid Mickey Mouse's Christmas Club if you are hungover!
23. I'd say so, yes, although it is different from school days where we used to hang out all the time as work / families / life gets in the way. You have to be able to at least get on as a minimum (even if you don't socialise much outside of the band) and I'd add a true friend would be able to take constructive criticism. Somebody who only speaks when you play badly isn't cool and I find if you mix the balance between "nice solo" and "not sure about that middle eight" it goes down a lot better.
24. I don't know about measurements but I don't like it too low so it rattles & buzzes; and I'm happy to dig in a little. I always whip off the stock strings and put flats on. And my main bass is my only bass guitar I gig with these days. I too opt for a fairly clean sound & I find I sound like me no matter what rig I go through.
