1. Those with old jazzes will probably say they are the best. And worth the most. I have a 2010 USA Fender Jazz and it's the only Jazz (that I've ever played) that I like the sound of.
2.
However, some of my favourite Paul McCartney lines in the psychedelic period, apparently played on a Rickenbacker, have a warm smooth honey tone. And how come some of his basslines sounded so un-Ric?
Paul still used his Hofner on quite a number of later Beatles tracks. He rolled off the treble on his bass to accentuate the bassiness of it, in keeping with The Beatles known sound.
My summary understanding (based on only a little experience) of Rickenbackers would be as follows: - Most bass players like the look of a Ric - A small number of bass players love the Ric sound (an important group with a valid opinion, but still a minority) - Almost no bass players rate Rics for their playability But how far am I off beam with the above generalisation?
Some do love them, some like them, some don't really care what a bass looks like. Some bassists can't stand the sight of a Ric. The idea of one gives them the creeping horrors. There is a lot of unfortunate reverse snobbery about them. Most players will be aware of the sound of certain Ric players basses (Squire, Foxton, Lemmy, etc) but will not know when a Ric is used on most other recordings. You can make a Ric sound pretty much like any other passive bass with sensible EQ and tone setting. I've used them for deep thudding blues with no effort at all. There is no typical Ric sound. You can get the CLANK that everyone talks about on a Ric, yes, but you can also get it on some other basses too, by experimenting with settings on amps and the other bass. Playability is all down to the personal taste of the player. I have 3 Ric 4003's and like them all. Other people will hate them. That's up to them. It doesn't make the bass bad. A lot of people moan about the 'sharp' edge binding. It can be worked round - you get used to playing with your arm not resting on the bass in the same way. I do it without thinking about it. The pickup cover can be removed if you don't like it. I've kept mine on.
3. If Springsteen wanted to play such a long set, perhaps he should have agreed to start earlier. Defeats the object of taking them off to then start a firework display, doesn't it??
4. If it was say a theatre show... Either in their cases in the locked dressing room or behind my bass rig, or on a triple Hercules stand behind the rig and out of the lights. I would have them moved into sight 5 mins before going on, after checking tuning. At a pub show.. On a triple Hercules stand place behind the PA stack, out of reach of the punters, or placed side on to bass rig, far side from drums.
5. My photo got moved, so I'll reinsert it...
6. Hofner do love to take the piss. With their prices.
7. Ric have trademarked most elements of the 4000 / 4001 / 4003 series basses - upper and lower horn dimensions, rear upper body shape, headstock, pickguard shape, the lot. It's a one-off, so he will probably only be hacked off if Lammy (being a sig model endorsee) has actually taken it and uses it onstage.
8. Just tape a rehearsal and all sit and listen to it back. Saying 'Oooo, you were a bit pitchy there' is a gentle nudge. Good luck - there's no cure if he's tone deaf.
9. Trivia - it was played on one of those 60's Fender 6-string basses with the very light strings by George Harrison. One of their best ever bass parts, too. 10.

I stood next to Gaye Advert once. She was all sweaty.

Gorgeous woman.
11. Hooky's signed Hondo II Ric copy was in a glass case in PMT in Salford not long ago, with a scary price tag. Foxton's Ric copy was an Ibanez. Wonder if he's still got it?
12. Preston Guild Hall. Preston had just become a city and the band I was with were the headliners at the civic celebrations. My cordless system's NEW battery decided to pack up, mid 3rd song. Fortunately I had a cable on top of my amp, just in case.
13. Knowing me knowing you by Abba - I remember seeing Elvis Costello play the song - rather a weird experience!
14. One of the first Tokai Strats. Ric 620/12 GWF
15. Possibly the worst of the day was Annie Lennox. Wost song choice - worst version. It pains me to say that, as she used to be incredible.
16. I wouldn't think that bass is worth the price, not even if the man himself presented it to me. I do like Tele style headstocks. Prefer them the right way up for those quick tuning incidents onstage. Does anyone else think that the last couple of ZZ Top live DVD's have been rather thin on bottom end? I was rather disappointed with them. If you look at the Rockpalast DVD, that's far more like it.
17. I have a fair old collection of basses and when gigging I will take 2-3 out in rotation, though I do have favourites. I've been playing since the mid 70's, so moving from one bass to another only gets to be an issue if it's my fretless or a 5-string.
18. I got roped into one last minute in Bolton yesterday. It started to pee down at about 4.00 so we moved the gear inside and carried on. Interestingly, the f***ing tributes with their minidiscs had the most problems with their gear. Us poor sods who actually play real instruments just got on with it.
19. Marguerita time was recorded by all 4 of Quo and it was actually meant to go on a Rossi solo album. Lancaster freaked out bigtime when it appeared on a Quo album (Back to back). The reported comments about facing his family are accurate. He married in 76 or 77 and went to live in Australia, refusing to come back and promote RAOTW - hence the puppet in the video. He also apparently called a halt to a partly planned tour at the same time. He hasn't missed an opportunity to bitch and snipe at Quo ever since. It's good that they have healed their wounds before it's too late. Rossi has said it's 12 dates with the old line-up and then Quo as they are now will continue. But he has qualified that by saying Quo haven't got long left to go. Some other bands should take this reunion as an example of how to behave.
20. It's your bass - as long as the job is neat - go for it. It will add a lot to the sound.
