My Gibson SG Supreme bass. Made in a very limited run for one month.

Music Ground in Denmark St had this collector's item on sale last time I was there a couple of years ago. They advertised it as being ex-Dave Hill of Slade. I mentioned that I run a comprehensive Slade site www.slayed.co.uk with details of their gear going back to the 60's and I assured them that Dave Hill [i]wouldn't be seen dead in the same town[/i] as that guitar. They looked at me as if I was mad and they put it on EBay as such. So, I contacted Slade's management for clarification ..... and I think they[i] had a word[/i]. They guitar has been advertised since as being "ex-Showaddywaddy". Of course, I am not an expert on popular all round middle of the road entertainers Showaddywaddy at all. But a 1950's off-pink penis styled guitar doesn't really sound like them either. I think they MAY still have it on EBay. [b]Have MG still got it and - if so - what is it being advertised as today???[/b]

I wouldn't change the basses I've bought over the years, even the ones I didn't use enough and sold on. I would, however, change things so that I had presevered with the 5 string Fender Jazz bass I sold. Having bought a Retrovibe RV5 recently and mastered it quite easily (better string spacing), I still wish I'd stuck with that Fender. I hate it when an instrument defeats me!!

In that condition, I wouldn't go over £850. There are clean examples around. The thing with getting paper under the tailpiece is an issue called tail lift.

He doesn't like Rics being criticised and if the bass had exploded on the way to the shop you were going to buy it from, it would still be 'the buyer's fault'. I have a (Aug 2002) 4003 BB that hasn't changed colour at all, though I don't take it out a lot. Can't complain there. My 4003 FG (Dec 2001) is perfect. I also have a 4003 MID (from Nove 2004) that bled blue paint into the binding. As mine was a 'grey import' and not covered by warranty (I said that from the start), I asked for tips on how to fix the problem. I do have a bass with 26 frets. It's wasted on me. I normally stop around the 14th fret as a rule.

Blue / green for me - if I was picking one. Equally nice basses.

I own a few 4003's. If you sit down and spend some time with it, you'll either get used to the neck and the pickup cover, or still not like the bass. I agree they are wildly overpriced now.

My 60th anniversary Fender USA P bass...

Years ago, I thought Fenders were an over-rated cliche and that many other basses were obviously much better. A Precision Lyte turned me into a non-skeptic. A superb bass and I ended up with two. I have owned a couple of ordinary Squier P's and was so-so about them, sold them both. I have since, however, bought 3 more recent Squier P's and love them. I bought a 60th anniversary USA Pbass mainly because the Devil made me do it. It's gorgeous. I never played a Jazz I liked 'til I tried a new USA model a couple of years ago on a trip to America. I bought that one on the spot. It's just what feels and sounds good to the player.

The second bass shows what good ideas this luthier can come up with, rather than just making Fender derivatives / 'copies'. The second bass is a really lovely-looking piece of work, but I wouldn't buy a Fender derivative, myself. I just don't see the point. There are so many other ideas for body shapes out there

I avoid black basses, as they are harder for the audience to see, as I usually wear black on stage. I made an exception for these two:

I bought a new USA Fender Jazz bass in Boston the year before last. British Airways managed to lose it for a while at Heathrow Terminal 5 (The Dead Zone) and it came up on the next connecting plane after mine to Manchester. They called me over to the customs desk to say it was delayed. I said I'd had that bass for 20 years and it was my best friend, so there would be deaths if they lost it I had a minibus booked to take us home, so they had to courier it to me (much) later that afternoon. No duty.
