1. Knowing me knowing you by Abba - I remember seeing Elvis Costello play the song - rather a weird experience!
2. One of the first Tokai Strats. Ric 620/12 GWF
3. Possibly the worst of the day was Annie Lennox. Wost song choice - worst version. It pains me to say that, as she used to be incredible.
4. I wouldn't think that bass is worth the price, not even if the man himself presented it to me. I do like Tele style headstocks. Prefer them the right way up for those quick tuning incidents onstage. Does anyone else think that the last couple of ZZ Top live DVD's have been rather thin on bottom end? I was rather disappointed with them. If you look at the Rockpalast DVD, that's far more like it.
5. I have a fair old collection of basses and when gigging I will take 2-3 out in rotation, though I do have favourites. I've been playing since the mid 70's, so moving from one bass to another only gets to be an issue if it's my fretless or a 5-string.
6. It's TB and here for me.
7. I got roped into one last minute in Bolton yesterday. It started to pee down at about 4.00 so we moved the gear inside and carried on. Interestingly, the f***ing tributes with their minidiscs had the most problems with their gear. Us poor sods who actually play real instruments just got on with it.
8. Marguerita time was recorded by all 4 of Quo and it was actually meant to go on a Rossi solo album. Lancaster freaked out bigtime when it appeared on a Quo album (Back to back). The reported comments about facing his family are accurate. He married in 76 or 77 and went to live in Australia, refusing to come back and promote RAOTW - hence the puppet in the video. He also apparently called a halt to a partly planned tour at the same time. He hasn't missed an opportunity to bitch and snipe at Quo ever since. It's good that they have healed their wounds before it's too late. Rossi has said it's 12 dates with the old line-up and then Quo as they are now will continue. But he has qualified that by saying Quo haven't got long left to go. Some other bands should take this reunion as an example of how to behave.
9. It's your bass - as long as the job is neat - go for it. It will add a lot to the sound.
10. All turned out a bit more towards ok then. More chance to make the NEXT recordings a real band effort. Good luck. Ian (also from Bolton)
11. I would never leave a bass hanging on a wall hanger for more than a couple of hours.
12. Saw them on the last two tours and have 2nd row tix for Blackpool. Superb band. Have got the new album in post - need to put it on!!
13. I like mine a lot. It has just about every variety of tone built in that anyone could need. This bass is great for the studio. It's great for live use, too and the only thing that could be considred a 'drawback' is the emormous body size. It weighs a ton!! The neck reach is the longest that I've ever had to use. You want neck dive? You got it. It sounds more like a Rickenbacker at times than my 3 Ric 4003's!
14. I was in a band and they all got a a ltter from HMRC demanding £4k each. Spoke to guitarist from his new home sat on the bog, terrified. Drummer sorted us all out. He had an accountant for his self employed stuff that he added the band to. I used to send in a spreadsheet of earnings, mileage, phone calls, stage clothes, repairs, set-ups, equipment costs, depreciation, etc etc etc. Had rebate on day job tax a few times.
15. From reading the first page of this, I'd suggest that the guy whose name you go out under meets the cost of you travelling separately. If Social Services got wind of the fact of how these kids are being treated (missing a part of each week at school to be 'home schooled' which I doubt happens), there would be huge fallout. It will probably happen. Best to suggest that he meets your travel expenses, so that the family can have proper time together without you all being in their way.
16. If singer doesn't play any other instrument (just sings), then perhaps they should buy something towards it such as the PA amp. The whole band should then chip in on speakers, etc. Each of you buys your own monitor - which is your own property. If the singer buys other gear (eg guitar or bass and amps), then equal shares in all PA equipment. Each of you buys your own monitor - which is your own property. In both cases, anyone leaving the band is bought out (on basis of current resale value of gear they have a share in), by rest of band. Agree in advance that resale value is 50% of new price.
17. Rather a lot by Justin Currie and Del Amitri.
18. This is too many... http://12stringbassist.blogspot.co.uk/ I should cull a few.
19. Radio Stars holiday album.
20. The most i've ever spent on a bass is £2k. That was a couple of years ago and the off price-hike here and there means they'd possibly be £3k now. I don't think I'd ever go that far again. You can get a pretty good bass for a grand.
21. EXPERIENCED BASSIST available for *working* band. North Manchester. Vocals, transport, excellent gear, quick learner - so no long drawn out rehearsals! Prefer to play entertaining tuneful stuff from 60's to more recent, via glam rock and classic rock. No blues bands, please! Happy to gig most weekends. Will play most places, but prefer not to lose money travelling to shows at far corners of the Earth! Videos on my webpage @ http://www.crazeewor...lus.com/ian.htm There's a contact page on site or send a message via here. Thanks.
22. Jesus, I've got a tie on in this one... That's unusual.
23. Mentioning no names... I was offered the opportunity some years ago, via a friend of the band to audition for a new line-up of a band, who had had number one hits in the UK. Their bassist was leaving. Fortunately, I had been in a number of their soundchecks and had seen how the rest of the band were treated by one of the original members. He was pretty shirty to me once when we were supporting them at one show. No playing our songs (we don't). Don't over-run (we won't). Don't step in front of the monitors or the power will be cut on you (we won't). I was quite taken aback at how a very nice humble down-to-earth bloke could turn into such an utter arsehole, after I had been on nodding terms with him for many years. On doing the math re leaving my day job vs the fee per show, I declined the opportunity to try out for them. I loved the original band, but haven't seen the re-jigged line-up since 2002.
24. I haven't come across any bad attitude at all at auditions. Perhaps I've been very lucky. Have only done two in the last few years and both were very good experiences. It may be that an existing band selecting a new member may be finding it difficult to work through seeing a few people to replace a long-term member who's left them. People should always remember that it's a two-way process. They don't just have to want you - you also have to want them. I took the opportunity with the last band I auditioned for, to gently remind them that they had to sell themselves to me too.
