1. Ha Ha , just as I thought I was climbing the learning curve .........it just got steeper
2.
Thanks i will take that on board and will have a pop at a remix, did you listen through headphones, quality speakers or computer speakers/laptop? Have remixed it slightly and brought the bass up a touch, dropped the keys down very slightly, let me know if you think this is better?
I only have headphones on my lappy at the moment , we are in a decoration/re-arrange mode at the minute , with regard your work, the don't take my word as gospel, I am new to the critique of mixing , but I am considering how much the mixing is a part of a composition competition ? if, like my entry, the composition is instrumental, then I guess the mix is fundamental. but I like it I have tried to listen again , but I get a script error ? I will go again tomorrow .
3. many thanks for the kind words , I am just chuffed to get one in .
Would appreciate some feedback myself if anyone can spare the time. Cheers https://soundcloud.c...words-entry-for
I really liked it , I think the overall ambience was lovely , I thought the bass could be higher and I thought the synth was a bit to far forward and 'pulsey' If you get my drift , but the same thing happened to mine on the soundcloud , my bass dropped a bit and a similar synth sound leapt out , But the composition was very appropriatte to the theme , very nice .
4. I am a composition virgin no more , my first entry , ooh er missus , I have really enjoyed having a go at this , thanks for all the help I have had so far , I am sure I will be back fo more . I don't totally understand, but the soundcloud mix I have uploaded does sound a bit different to my original, I think my synth sounds are a bit brighter. for your interest here
5. I have managed to record a resemblance of a composition and am reasonably confident of getting an entry in this month, but still consider myself very much a novice in composing, recording and mixing. My daughter asked to listen to what I had done so far , so I duly hit the play button in Reaper so she could hear it , a short while later she offers both her critique and help in mixing the work . whats more , judging by her observations, I think she understands some of the issues in my efforts Now I must say in my defence , she has learnt a bit of Cubase ( at school) , BUT , she is 12 years old , apparantly DAW is on the learning spectrum at that age now , all we did in music at that age was listen to an album that someone in the class brought in.
6.
I don't go in for all this muscle memory stuff, it's just the brain. We don't have muscles in our fingers!
I always had the impression that muscle memory is just training the brain by repetition of the muscle movement. its kind of why you can pick your nose without really thinking about it ............. and then your mum shouts at you , then your wife , and then your kids , the dog ...........maybe not such a good analogy
7.
As some who has never practiced for the sake of practicing ........................................... People go on about muscle memory, but I just don't seem to have it. I have a sneaking suspicion that it is another symptom of the condition that most obviously manifests itself as dyslexia...
I am similar to you but I have started to do a bit of scale practise based on the fact that you only develop muscle memory if you give it something to memorise. I can pretty much play Summer of 69 blindfold , and that only comes from gigging it week after week for ???? years .
8. I was quite chuffed when I first realised that I could 'see' a bassline when hearing it , I think it just is as much like training your ear.
9. Thanks guys , If I can put a bit more time on it I will , I am still working my way around the software and there a few things that I have got to get my head around , but its all good fun .
10. OK then , I have had a go , I think I am at my limit , so I put up what I've done , I think it is an improvement on last months entry, and I have a few kind people to thank for pointing me in the right direction, whether I followed any of it however is for you to judge. I noticed the headphones comment earlier , headphones is all I have at the moment so that is my monitoring method, I guess that proper studio monitors are the way to go , but one step at a time Linky
11. Well done Jim , Ive dropped a post in here so that I can use it to load the map/ earth links as it develops, great to get it started . google BCRelay map
12. My Little Lappy is coping OK so far , it should be up to the job , the question now is ......am I
13. I fear this one may be a need a new computer , I don't think my laptop could handle that , still I will give it a try tommorrow.
14. Hi Ben , I am pretty new to the idea of mixing , but something that appears to be the crux of the issue is the seperation of the space for the sounds to be able to be heard properly and I reckon trying to record and mix live would be the hardest way of approaching it . To me the mix lacks the brightness that equing and shed loads of FX would bring if each track was done seperately, but I would have been happy with that as a recording of one of my gigs. With the sort of kit that DAW FX make on a track , I would shudder to think what hardware kit and time would be needed to do it live at a gig . Good work I reckon , but I am sure you will get some more practical advice from some guys who know stuff
15. Is this/are these mahoosive files ? my machine says it will take 15mins to download . I thought zips were really quick ?
16.
Not sure buddy. The google earth things a cool idea. Where there's no set route, I really wouldn't know what to suggest
I wasn't thinking in terms of planning the route , more of reporting it pictorally , IYSWIM , I will give it some thought and have a play .
17. Does anyone Know how to share Google Earth files? I can and will do a simple map trace like that in the first thread , but I was thinking I could do a google earth trace so that it could be followed in detail but I cant suss how to share the route on Earth or whether peeps would follow it at such detail , I could easily do the route and save as a picture and refresh that for each event . Any prefs Jim / Bcers ?
18.
Because at the moment I'm dealing with it mate.
Ah OK
19. Well done Paul , I think it is fantastic , They are all great but yours is brilliant , a deserved winner .
20. I have only just sussed this feedback thing , but I bought an Ampeg pf500 in the middle of last year , very easy transaction , I wouldn't hesitate to deal again with Ben .
21. Why don't you go round his recent posts start quoting them and asking for some attention , he may get the hint if he is following some threads , it probably is a bit dodgy forum ettiquette , but might just kick something into life
22. As an aside , I was in a sports car club for a fair few years and did a number of trackdays , while there was a large web forum presence of friendliness , I found that I was the only person of those that drove the marque to go and introduce myself to other owners who were there , it was bizarre , only once did someone come and introduce themselves to me in 6 years. I suppose though , I could be the guy they all wanted to avoid and maybe my sh1t stinks , or they were sooooo embarrased at being soooo slow . but still I still think it was odd.
23. what with gigging, rehearsing, the occassional show and the odd night on the lash , I would be on thin ice running around to see to many BCer gigs , having said that , I have been to see a couple that were local and nearly got to see one while on holiday, there are a few I would love to go and see that seem waaaaay off the beam , but the logistics often don't work out. I think I need someone to explain what the wife and kids will enjoy if I take them to Wakefield or Nottingham for a night out
24.
Where are you from? I could drink beer and listen to that
+1
25.
Sorry if this is rambling, was up till gone midnight trying to get a half decent version of 'Going Underground' under control.
Be careful with this one , fantastic tune , but you need to be up in the mix and quite bright , almost clanky and it makes you exposed , the song is not that awkward to play but the start needs the confidence , if you get a chance run their start through a couple of times so that you know who does what, where , if you are not expecting what they throw at you it could get a bit messy. I played along to the CD for ages and new it inside out ..... until the band tried it out for real , it took a few goes to get the start right .
