Read a few reviews online, all seems to be good stuff and it appears to be a really verstile bass. Does anyone have any first-hand experience?

Quite excited to hear the samples, I was thinking about a P-retro for my Squier (already upgraded the pickup to a Duncan SPB-2) but not too sure if I need one/can justify spending more than I payed for the bass on a preamp.

Aww I saw this thread too late, I cannot reccomend Seymour Duncan SPB-2's (the 'HOT' ones) enough. Really, really punchy, you can hear them on the download in my sig in my Squier Affinity P-Bass (all stock except from the pickups)

When it works it's great but it's just too unreliable.

Finish would look amazing with a pearloid guard! What's preamp in it?

If you feel your sound is 'thin', up the bass and cut the treble IME thats the easiest way to get more 'boom' to your bass sound. Appologies for all these unhelpful descriptions..

Rickenbacker basses, and I think it's an Ampeg SVT VR with an 810 he has an ampeg combo onstage with him too.

John Deacon, and a lesser known player Ross McNae (although he is now playing a marcus miller jazz)

Cort GB series, They are like stingray/jazz hybrids with a two band pre-amp. Mine is in a really funky blue finish with a pearloid pickguard, I'd definatly reccomend one... spare parts are hard to come by though so be careful with it.

On topic : the claypool bass looks cool, but I don't think you could play something that flashy in a regular band.

My main bass is now a Squier P (with a semour duncan pickup) and I turn up to gigs and soundcheck and people are still amazed that my tone is coming from a Squier. It's great that you don't really have to justify playing a cheaper bass when the sound does it for you
