1. I've got the delay pedal. Its good, the switching is a little bit odd but you get used to it and the sounds are very nice. For £30 its outrageous value. I wrote a quick review and recorded some sound samples, you'll find them in a post over at thefretboard fretmeister. My work's net filter has banned that site here so I can't find the link to post it directly... Sam
2. The only bass related thing I got was some new strings that a relative had picked up for me whilst working in the USA. Finally saw him over Christmas so got my grubby little mitts on them after months of waiting. Ken Smith Compressores. I love them so far. Very even tone, quite piano like. Led to believe they're the same as GHS Pressurewounds but with a longer speaking length.
3. I'm sure that one is listed in the classifieds here.
4. I've had two experiences with them. First one : ordered something they told me they had in stock. They didn't. Told me it would be in stock "this week for sure ". It wasn't. Gave me the same line three weeks running. I cancelled. Second one : ordered a bass case. After about ten months a strap broke. They replaced it. Two or three months later the replacement broke in exactly the same way (clearly a design flaw). G4M refused to replace it as I was "now outside my one year warranty period" on my original purchase. I'm still annoyed I let that slide but I was distracted by more pressing matters. I won't be using them again.
5.
Hearts Stairway to Heaven, at the Kennedy Centre was a huge cheesefest too, as they murdered the song. The worst part was when the curtains parted, a gospel choir was revealed, and turned the song into some kind of 'Christian Rock'. The Leds smiled dutifully but I'm sure they were thinking 'WTF!!!'.
I think someone posted a thread about that here. Everyone was raving about how good it was
6. my frank and honest opinion is that you need to get a specialist to look at your wrist/hand before you even think about buying more basses. Have you had any bass lessons? might also be worth getting a couple to have your posture and technique checked out.
7. Am I the only person that likes presents to be a surprise?
8.
I follow Nile Rodgers on Facebook and he's posted loads of stuff over the last year about the development of his signature Fender Strat. I don't know about other artist's signature models but Nile appears to have been very hands on with the development of his.
Yep. I think Nile wants an exact replica of his strat because it's far too rare and valuable and probably far too sentimentally valuable for him to tour with anymore. 59 hardtail strats are rare enough, nevermind ones that have played on billions of dollars worth of recordings! Johnny Marr is another one who clearly thought a lot about what he wanted and his signature guitar truly is quite unique.
9. Worst night of the year to do anything. Most town centres resemble the end of days by about 7pm. Ugh.
10.
never mint the PvJ apartheid we need a cats v dogs subforum
No we don't, those who would prefer cats should just receive the banhammer!!
11. I love the HH version but I can't see myself having £1500 to spend on a bass any time soon.
12.
naturally big tube amps only sound good when they're driven hard, which results in totally stupid stage volumes.
Thats just not true at all. Some people really like the sound you get from running big amps at low volumes. Its very different to the sound you get from running a low powered amp at the same volume.
13. I had the passive one from the same era and for £75 its a great wee thing. Not sure how good the preamp will be though.
14. The "speaking length" is the maximum "usable" length of the string. In other words, its the maximum distance you can have between the ball end of the string and the nut. Measure what this distance is, you'll probably find that you need medium or long scale strings, even though its a short scale bass.
15. Its gotta be Wipeout and Apache, surely. Two massive crowd pleasers and not all that tricky.
16.
I had good customer service from them in the past my only gripe is that they advertise literally everything in the bass world that is available to buy, then try to get hold of something when someone orders it... I've had orders delayed for months then eventually cancelled when it turns out the item isn't available. They should only advertise stuff they can actually sell you.
I've had exactly the same problem with them in the past, and thats put me off using them again. I do keep hearing good things about them though, maybe I should give them another chance.
17. Personally if I was going to do it I'd probably go the other way---rounds on the E/A and flats on the D/G. I think this would give a much better balance of timbre across the instrument. But why not give it a go? It could sound ace.
18. I'm kind of expecting a wave of these to hit the second hand market at somepoint. I think the Bass VI definitely falls into the category of "very, very cool, but what do you do with it?" and a lot of people are buying them on something of a whim.
19. I'm not a 6-stringer, but I think if you want a good one for that kind of money you're definitely better off going second hand. Personally I'd go Yamaha but Ibanez are probably worth a shout too.
20.
I am not a fan of the clubs onTalkbass. Fine if it fits in with your herding instinct, but in general those threads become so long that it is next to impossible to find the information that you need in them. I rather have it in bite-sized chunks as it is over here.
I agree. Those mega-long threads are nearly impossible to find anything in, and anytime I've posted a question in one its been lost amongst all the noise of 18 other ongoing discussions and three sets of new bass pictures.
21.
I'm going away, but coming back on the 29th and I have another two weeks holidays after that so if you're free in early January... :-)
Sounds good. I'll give you a shout via PM nearer the time. I've even stocked up on Caesar Augustus and other Williams Bros treats
22. I like the look of that. I'll need to have a shot on it. ;-) are you about over Christmas? We could have a bass party!
23. I'd say that if you haven't paid to advertise it here you probably shouldn't link to it.
24. I'm from Glasgow but live in Edinburgh. Surprised you don't like CC music, I've always thought they had some really interesting gear. Merchant City Music is great, like you say.
25. I've actually been doing some research today. I think my solution will be to buy a Sansa Clip+ and put a 64GB SDXC card in it. About £80 for a 64 GB flash based mp3 player.
