1 - because it is perfectly legal. I could add 3 - TB is evidently not afraid of empty, inane and groundless threats the way we plainly are.
Even if you are 100% in the right defending legal action is expensive, time consuming, and stressful. It has become a sad fact of the modern world that---even if they are wrong---companies can tie up the little guys in legal knots. Thats the way it is, and unless our legal system changes thats the way its going to remain. Sure, basschat could call Rickenbacker's bluff, but what would be the point? The mods and admins would risk massive hassle, stress, expense, and even risk losing the whole site, and in return for "victory" a few people would get to trade a few basses. Sometimes its worth making a stance against "injustices" but sometimes the stakes are so unimportant that its just not worth it.
I think we need a new section ... Lawchat. Like Hiram, I detest JH's bullying tactics and I would LOVE to call his bluff. Last time around, I suggested having a Basschat whipround to raise a fighting fund to pay the lawyers. Like Bassassin, I know a fair bit about RIC and their finances - they're (relatively) tiny, and highly unlikely to be able to cross the Atlantic with a high-powered legal team.
I would also love to call his bluff, but an additional problem is that the first step in any legal action could well be a strongly worded letter to Basschat's ISP---and ISP's aren't exactly known for fact checking before closing sites down. A letter from a relatively well known American company claiming copyright infringement, along with the mention that "eBay comply with our takedown requests" and suddenly the site disappears. The admins would probably be eventually able to get the site back online, but at what cost in terms of time, effort, and legal fees---not to mention the effect on the forum of it disappearing for some length of time. Even if Basschat were 100% legally in the right (and I suspect we would be based on what I understand of EU law) Ric can still cause massive headaches. Its just not worth it.
why should John Hall decide what is for sale on Bass chat. because in reality that's what's happened here.
Because John Hall has time, money, expensive lawyers, and a seemingly litigious nature. Basschat has none of the tools required to fight that. I can't believe we're discussing this *again*. Personally I think asking basschat and the mods/admins to run the risk of legal action by Rickenbacker just so a few people can buy and sell some basses is extremely rude. Are any of the people who want to overturn the ban willing to stump up all legal fees and take responsibility for defending the site, or do you just expect the mods to do it for you?
So I chickened out until the end of rehearsal. I said to them they would need to get a new bassist but that I would work with my replacement as much as they needed until he/she were ready. I also said I would do all the gigs until somebody was ready. The Troyen guitarist asked, quite sharply for him, what my reasons were. Unusual for him, he really is a nice, gentle man. I mumbled I had my reasons.
You've got to do whats right for you, I suppose, but there's something quite amusing about someone quitting a band partly because of his bandmate's failure to communicate with him and then not telling them why!!
Thank you to all you lot for the last week. The supporters and the ones who think I'm a tosser. For good and bad, you have all been the musical sanity in the vacuum between my lugs. Thanks all.
Don't think anyone thinks you're a tosser. A few people thought you were overreacting (I still do) but at the end of the day only you can decide whether you want to be in a band or not. I still think leaving a band because of something that might happen rather than something that has happened is jumping the gun somewhat, but then again its not my band so you should do what you want.
I'm from Darlington originally, you will need to make allowances I'm afraid
I had a girlfriend from Darlington. Nice girl. ...and thats the best thing I can say about Darlington
See the row of ..................... following the statement? It was an open invitation for somebody to post a link to Python's Spanish Inquisition. Well, it was in my head. T'interweb eh
I see. Smilies are always better than ellipsis for signalling intent
Didn't expect a Spanish Inquisition................
A few people saying "I think you're overreacting" is about as far from Spanish Inquisition as it gets. If you didn't expect people to give you their opinion then why did you post on a discussion forum about it?
I'm a late comer to this, but Karl, I struggle to relate to why you are so annoyed about this other band. Granted, they could have approached you and spoken before it went on FB but that's just how the world is now. I've been sacked from a band I had been working on for a year by text message! Personally, I'd be more pissed these other two clowns have just let you do all the pa monkey work without offering to help, nothing kills fun quicker than resentment. Have a good old fashioned truth session with your band, IF all of you are brave to enough listen to what comes out without throwing punches, it's not everyone's cup of tea!
+1, I think the OP is more annoyed than he should be about this other band. Until it actually starts to interfere whats the problem? The PA issue is far more worthy of annoyance IMO.

Does everyone erm ....know their time signatures?
uncle psychosis replied to Phil Adams's topic in General Discussion
8/8 = 1 and a 2 and a 3 and 8/8 (another one) = 1 and 2 and a 3 and a
In 20 years of reading music I've never come across 8/8. Its much more common for music to be written down using changing time signatures than it is using these "odd" ones. Your first example would be much clearer written as a bar of 6 and a bar of 2, for example. In my opinion the only time signatures theory beginners need consider are 4/4, 3/4, 2/4, 2/2, 5/4, 7/4. 6/8, 9/8, 12/8 and thankfully those are all easy to understand. These really weird things like 8/8 are little more than theoretical constructs that you'll only come across once in a lifetime unless you're into some pretty niche stuff. -
I have relatively small hands and the only thing that annoys me about my 35" bass is getting strings that are long enough. Playing wise its fine.

There have been yamaha TRBs going for £300ish on the forum recently. Fantastic basses.

eBay take a cut on postage now!!!
uncle psychosis replied to Ghost Rider's topic in General Discussion
I actually think its quite strange how many people only bother to see what the fees are going to be *after* they sell something. There's even a calculator on the eBay site now, there is no reason not to know beforehand what its going to cost you. By all means if you don't like the fees don't use them, but using their service and *then* complaining about the price is a bit daft IMO. -
This might go off at a tangent but ... Where do you guys buy your strings for ?
My current strings of choice are Pressurewounds. And, annoyingly, the only Pressurewounds long enough to fit on my 35" TRB1005 are Ken Smith Compressors, for which there appear to be zero UK stockists. So I have to order them from the States (and pay about an extra 50% for the postage costs) or find a friendly USA-dweller who is either coming to visit me or is willing to post them to me directly at more reasonable cost. The strings are worth it though! For those of you who have shorter basses, the GHS Pressurewounds are very good indeed and IME are nearly identical to the Ken Smiths, only shorter. I'm led to believe that GHS make the Smiths, which would maybe explain the similarity.
I like some of it but get a bit confused as to where the boundaries are between hip hop and rap etc, but I suppose if you like something, then its good, right?

i don't think there are any boundaries. in my experience Rap is Hip Hiop, just a different word for the same genre.
Rap is just a vocal style. Hip Hop is a genre of music in which rap is commonly featured. You can have rap without the song being hip-hop (see: John Barnes' legendary rap in World In Motion)
Is there really any point in going over and over this anyway? I like a flat EQ
So on every single amp you've ever used you set the eq the same?
-
Ok, I take on board what you are saying but the op was about flat EQ which is a different term to flat signal. We all know what someone means when they sat flat EQ, so I can't for the life of me understand what all the fuss is about. I think maybe we should look to my profile pic to put this in perspective
Yes, they mean "I put the controls on my amp to their centre positions", which is a fairly meaningless concept. Plug your bass into an SVT and put the controls to the centre position. Have a listen. Then plug the same bass into a Hartke LH500 and put the controls to the centre position. The end results will sound completely and utterly different. "Flat EQ" on Amp A sounds different to "Flat EQ" on Amp B. Its what it sounds like that matters, not what arbitrary position you've set the controls to. A more correct question would be "who has found an amp whose default tonestack suits you?".

The answer is not to bother going to see bands who are past-it playing in venues that are far too big. Expecting excitement and energy from artists that haven't produced anything relevant or exciting in decades and who are still living off past glories is never going to go well. Go and see some young, up and coming bands instead, or at the very least artists who are still producing new material which is worth listening to!
Understood Lemmy, but why would he get someone to come round and remove a date written on the fretboard unless he knew it was a fake date?
He got someone to come round and remove the fingerboard (neck) so that the date could be read. Its poor English, not necessarily any kind of scam. -
Incredible, eh? Considering it's the style of bass I have owned longest and owned the larger number of (mostly because I went "meh, I don't like this" ) it's a surprising revelation. It's also given me a new sense of purpose: I do want a decent P now. It means maple fingerboard (of course), with a very nice neck (wide and chunky, but "just so"), and that has that "thump" in it (which means trying a bunch...). One day. The P certainly has its place beside the Stingray and Jazz. I have generally used a Jazz neck pickup to mimic a P, which it does to some extent, but there's something missing that even a lowly SR Precision has.
Knowing your love of bridge pickups you should try a BB series Yamaha. Its not quite *the* P sound but I think you might like it. You're welcome to a go on my 414 if you fancy
Under good old 'invitation to treat' legal rulings I don't think a shop has to sell at a price that's displayed so, if I'm correct, he could have refused your 'offer to buy' at the displayed price
This is correct. -

I'd just put the screws back in! You could always get some black screws if silver ones stand out too much.

Playing with a Pick - looking for advice
uncle psychosis replied to Count Bassy's topic in General Discussion
For me, the most important part of pick technique is learning to alternate pick. It makes a huge difference if you can do it.
