1. I had the passive one from the same era and for £75 its a great wee thing. Not sure how good the preamp will be though.
2. The "speaking length" is the maximum "usable" length of the string. In other words, its the maximum distance you can have between the ball end of the string and the nut. Measure what this distance is, you'll probably find that you need medium or long scale strings, even though its a short scale bass.
3. Its gotta be Wipeout and Apache, surely. Two massive crowd pleasers and not all that tricky.
4.
I had good customer service from them in the past my only gripe is that they advertise literally everything in the bass world that is available to buy, then try to get hold of something when someone orders it... I've had orders delayed for months then eventually cancelled when it turns out the item isn't available. They should only advertise stuff they can actually sell you.
I've had exactly the same problem with them in the past, and thats put me off using them again. I do keep hearing good things about them though, maybe I should give them another chance.
5. Personally if I was going to do it I'd probably go the other way---rounds on the E/A and flats on the D/G. I think this would give a much better balance of timbre across the instrument. But why not give it a go? It could sound ace.
6. I'm kind of expecting a wave of these to hit the second hand market at somepoint. I think the Bass VI definitely falls into the category of "very, very cool, but what do you do with it?" and a lot of people are buying them on something of a whim.
7. I'm not a 6-stringer, but I think if you want a good one for that kind of money you're definitely better off going second hand. Personally I'd go Yamaha but Ibanez are probably worth a shout too.
8.
I am not a fan of the clubs onTalkbass. Fine if it fits in with your herding instinct, but in general those threads become so long that it is next to impossible to find the information that you need in them. I rather have it in bite-sized chunks as it is over here.
I agree. Those mega-long threads are nearly impossible to find anything in, and anytime I've posted a question in one its been lost amongst all the noise of 18 other ongoing discussions and three sets of new bass pictures.
9.
I'm going away, but coming back on the 29th and I have another two weeks holidays after that so if you're free in early January... :-)
Sounds good. I'll give you a shout via PM nearer the time. I've even stocked up on Caesar Augustus and other Williams Bros treats
10. I like the look of that. I'll need to have a shot on it. ;-) are you about over Christmas? We could have a bass party!
11. I'd say that if you haven't paid to advertise it here you probably shouldn't link to it.
12. I'm from Glasgow but live in Edinburgh. Surprised you don't like CC music, I've always thought they had some really interesting gear. Merchant City Music is great, like you say.
13. I've actually been doing some research today. I think my solution will be to buy a Sansa Clip+ and put a 64GB SDXC card in it. About £80 for a 64 GB flash based mp3 player.
14.
As an antidote to iPods, last year I took a deep breath and dived into the smartphone world. I went for an HTC One+ or some such name. Anyway the upside is 64GB solid state memory most of which is free to use. Better than most of them at the time, but that was a whole year ago so I'm guessing things have moved on...
That's still pretty huge in smartphone terms. Personally I prefer having separate smartphone and mp3 player. My 30 GB mp3 is full now, so I have been looking at the ipod classics. They're really expensive when you compare them to just putting a huge memory card in a phone though :-(
15.
I managed to find an Amazon dealer doing 4 string sets for £31 thankfully, but the cheapest i can find the 4 string sets anywhere else is £38, though i need a bus ride on top of that to the shop to get them (After calling them to place an order so they can get them in) so it still ends up being over 40 quid. Liam
You might find it cheaper to import them from the USA. Even with tax and duty they often work out cheaper. And stuff does occasionally slip through the net.
16. I really want to not like that. Natural wood finishes with burls and stuff just aren't my thing. But thats lovely! Good work.
17.
I saw the Nile Rogers one, might buy his book on the strength of it.
Get it. Its one of the best musical autobiographies I've ever had the pleasure of reading. He's very honest and a great storyteller.
18.
He isn't really going for a specific tone but is after something with the inherent qualities of the JCM or fender twin. Features galore is not a must and hopefully lightish.
Those two amps couldn't be much further removed from each other! I'm no expert on guitar amps, but you might want to check out the Peavey Classic 30 (you'd need to go second hand).
19.
Uncle - will you be posting a link to Guitarchat on their site too?
If I get the chance to, yes. In the past I've regularly posted links to basschat from there (or at least from its predecessor, Musicradar).
20. Not tried the Mono straps but I do have a Neotech Mega Bass Strap which I believe is very similar. Its fantastic.
21. I love the feel of flats, but I can't *quite* get on with the sound. I'm hoping that pressurewounds will be a halfway house.
22. I've got it on DVD, its quite an interesting watch and if anyone is wondering, no you don't need to be a fuzz obsessive to enjoy it. Its more of an effects pedal documentary than a fuzz-specific one.
23. [sup]For the benefit of anyone looking in future---I've had a couple of pre-Wilkinson Vintage instruments (not a Les Paul, though) and they were both really good (for the cash). The hardware isn't as good as the Wilkinson stuff and I'd want to try before I bought, but they're worth checking out at least.[/sup]
24.
Black and gold looks awesome -
Cool Yammy. What model is it? I can't work it out...
25. If you're also interested in PJ configs I'd definitely check out the Yamaha BB range.
