1. Thanks for the offer of trying Greek that's really kind of ya! I'm a bit far for a go tho
2. Well my budget is fairly limited so a good acoustic bass maybe out of my league. I understand where your coming from about wanting to play and have the passion and a instrument I dislike may put me off. I think all the advice given to me is great. You guys and gals have been playing much longer than me and have more insight into the bassist world so I take what you all say seriously. It's made me think rather than rush in.
3. I'd be a fool to ask for your advice and then not listen to it. I just liked the idea of one, but your probably right. I'll look at some electric bass and see whats good. I don't want to be put off playing, its tough learning as it is Thanks for taking the time to reply
4. Hi all, I started to learn a few months back but due to buying a house and life being hectic I have only just started to learn and practice again after 3 months. I currently play on a borrowed bass from my bro in law, but have got some money spare just over 200 quid so thought I'd treat myself to my very own bass. Now I love the idea of acoustic bass guitar and have been looking at my options and what not. I have found this Ibanez sgbe110-vs which sounds good from youtube videos i can find. I don't think anywhere near me stocks these I Am aware of..(not that I have extensive knowledge of music shops near me haha) to have a hold and try what little I know. Anyway, my question is will I find it tough to learn, I am on the basics still, with the acoustic bass? Also has anyone had any experience of others in this sorta price range? Or this particular bass? Thanks in advance, Plampers
5. Lol. I haven't left, just been reading with interest the debate. I think your right though, I can't let myself get too overwhelmed, I have never played an instrument but I have seriously Fallen for the bass. I'm only using a borrowed one to see if I could enjoy it, but I am considering actually taking the plunge and buying one. With the theory It's definitely going to take me a long while but I'll keeping reading and practicing and hopefully all will become clear:) Again thanks for every ones input thus far, there has been some useful nuggets to absorb!!
6.
Yup you will come across the notes G A B C D E F# G it will be the same shape as the C Major, which is why you have to play an F#... keep that shape
Great. I'll keep working through the major scales and memorising notes. Cheers for your help.
7. Well, I have learned the c major scale slowly this evening. I can even remember the notes by saying them aloud as I play. So by now i know this scale your saying I can start on the 3rd fret on E string( which is a g) and follow the pattern and that is also a major scale?
8. Thanks for the great replies. I'm going to work through the study bass site slowly, that seems pretty informative. As some people have said youtube is good but there is so much there i found it potluck, I could get one good lesson but then I couldn't find a follow up. As to what baffles me..well the basics. Scales and chords. From Scott's devices bass lesson on scales I have a better idea. I think I need to get to know the notes by name and it may help me. I can work them out but I couldn't just find a certain note fast. Well I wanted to learn, nothing worth doing is easy..right Again thanks for the info/ replies
9. Cheers for the replies. Just subscribed to Scott's site. I think I am one of those people it takes time to form a connection.
10. Hi all, Well I have been trying to learn the bass, just started a few weeks back. I have the bass guide for dummies that I was working through but the theory side of music etc has completely baffled me. I just don't get it. I moved on to just learning some easy tabs to get used to the fret board but I don't want to scrimp on understanding the theory. I am 29 and this is he very first time I have tried anything musical, so I was wondering if any one knows of some good theory sites or perhaps another book that really breaks it down. Sadly lessons are not affordable at the current moment. Any ideas where I can start?
11. Great , ill have a look at some point. Im an Essex lad too Mushers, where abouts you from?
12. Thanks for the replies! And Warm welcome.
Hi Plampers. As a recent convert to BC, I'm sure you'll find this crowd friendly, supportive and slightly nuts, just like all bass players Like yourself, I've never had lessons on guitar or bass but I've watched and listened to a lot of very talented players and never been afraid to ask "How do you do that?". You don't say what types of music you are interested in but whatever it is, find some tracks with good bass lines and listen to them carefully and try to understand how they are put together. I use Riffster to slow down or change keys of tracks I am learning. If you are on a tight budget, there is Riffster Lite which has most of the features of the full version and is free. I'm personally not a great fan of "How to .." books. I prefer to watch the fingers moving and hear the sounds they produce. I'm going to check out the suggestions made above to see if any of them match justinguitar.com for the quality of free on-line guitar tutorials. Finally, there is a word for people who sit alone in their bedrooms playing with themselves, and it's not nice. At your embrionic stage, it's good to sit down with anybody who can bash out a few notes on a guitar, piano, nose-flute etc. and learn with and from each other. Finally, finally, don't forget it's supposed to be FUN ! Myk
I agree, i made myself sound like a bit of a loner there. I will be having a laugh with a few people i know should i pick it up enough. As for music, well i used to be into my metal/rock, but i listen to anything and everything nowadays. I can tell you one tune im dying to learn is sugar hill gang rappers delight Again, thanks for the welcomes and advice.
13. Thanks for the welcome and links
14. Ohh that's cool, cheers for that link.
15. Hi all, Well basically, my bro in law has let me have his old bass guitar (something I have always wanted to try) so I am going to try and learn some stuff. There is no pressure on myself, I'm only doing it so I can jam and bring a smile to my face haha. I am completely new to music, I literally will be starting from scratch, so I am trying to get the basics together. Sadly lessons are out of the question for me as I live on a fairly tough budget so I was hoping someone could recommend some good books to self teach? I have had a look at sme vids on you tube but nothing is comprehensive enough and I want some theory behind it. I have seen Bass Guitar for dummies and read its pretty good, but wondering if there is any gems you guys can suggest? Thanks a lot, Plampers
