After 8 years of searching....... (Yamaha 2024MX content)
uncle psychosis replied to Beedster's topic in General Discussion
You guys traded a BB2024 for a Roscoe Beck? I'd have been delighted with either side of that deal -
Incidentally, is there a post here, or anywhere, that lists the fuzzes that definitely do / definitely don't work with actives? If it doesn't exist... is that something that could be started?
Problem is---especially with fuzz---that nearly everyone has a different view on what "works" and what doesn't, especially because it also depends to an extent on exactly what preamp is in your bass, your settings, what you're trying to do, etc.

Why not use the volume knob to balance it out? Have I missed something?
If you knew about Flea at all, you'd know that he absolutely abhorrs those who go on stage and mime

I never insisted that Flea hates people who mime.

You guys make me chuckle. No matter how big RHCP are, they were humbled at the opportunity to play at the largest sports event in the world and didn't want to turn down the gig because they insist on playing live, Anthony got to sing live and they recorded the track especially for the gig. I don't get the issue; would you have wanted Flea and the rest to not play? I very much doubt such an event would be dictated to by a guest act (Bruno Mars was the hired artist)!! When all of you guys make it, I trust you will be turning down such once-in-a-career opportunities to play on such a stage
Lighten up! You've got to admit that there's something more than a little silly about Miltys insistence that Flea hates people who mime (apart from if the gig is REALLY big, and lots of people are watching) and that the RHCP don't mime on principle (apart from when they do)... "we're totally vegetarian, man, apart from last Tuesday when someone cooked us these awesome steaks which we felt really bad about eating, but yeah, totally meat free diet man... "

Real Comical Ali stuff there Milty. Keep up the good work :-D
If the NFL want me to mime during the break at next seasons Super bowl.......I'm in!
Me too, I'd happily do it. I just wouldn't release cryptic comments afterwards to pretend I'd been forced into it ;-)
How do you know he had no choice? Do we know what's in his contract? Do we know what his management say? Do we even know what the rest of the band say? No. He may well have had no choice.
Keep clutching at those straws, Milty
If you knew about Flea at all, you'd know that he absolutely abhorrs those who go on stage and mime and do their best to trick their fans into believing that what their hearing is the same as what they are seeing. Flea obviously didn't want anybody to think that he was genuinely playing right then and there, so he removed his wireless transmitter, and thus removed any doubt that what people were hearing was not actually what they were seeing.
Yeah, abhors them so much that he happily took money to do it himself. Only a tiny percentage of the viewing population will have been aware or even cared that he wasn't plugged in, to everyone else he was on stage, with his bass, playing along to the music. If he wanted to "remove all doubt" then why was he waggling his fingers about as if playing the damn thing?
Your final statement is that if they had mimed convincingly, it would have been less insulting to the viewers? Please.
"no choice" says Flea. He had every choice, he could have said no. Coming out with that obvious tripe is the insulting part.

Gumtree. Also, check Facebook for a local buy and sell group. There's a music one near me which is much more active than gumtree it seems.
Flea has just tweeted this, which I think explains his position; "No trickery. No choice, but no trickery" Gentlemen, I think it's case closed.
Nonsense, in every sense. They were all pretending to play their instruments. Thats "trickery" however you want to frame it. As for "no choice", I'm pretty sure the multi-million selling multi-millionaire RHCP weren't being held at gunpoint to go along with proceedings. If they weren't happy to fake it they could have said no. They said yes knowing full well that they would be miming. Pretending that they had no choice in the matter is just insulting. So much for rock n roll. PS I actually don't have a problem with the miming part. That was inevitable. Its the sad pretence that they were in someway coerced and not fully willing participants in the charade that I find insulting to their fans.
I've bought three basses over the years which i collected where the buyer wanted payment by paypal. I've found no problem with this method of payment and you are also covered by paypals protection policy. On one occasion i wanted to see the basses before paying as the photos weren't that good on ebay so i took my laptop with me and when i checked it and found everything fine i payed there and then by paypal.
I can't understand why a seller would rather have paypal than cash on collection, though. Why pay paypal fees and leave yourself open to all manner of chargeback scams when you can just be handed cold, hard cash? Cash on collection is the safest method for both parties to get a safe transaction, surely??
-
Collection only but the seller stipulates "absolutely no cash on collection" and seems to want PayPal or a cheque (and 7 days to clear it) . Seems odd and would definitely put me off bidding.
-
Reverend make some really cool basses. Would love to try some.
That sounds the wrong way round to what I meant. I have this thing for sale. I really don't want to post it, so collection only please. What? You'd like to buy it but you live far away? Well, I'd really rather not post it. I don't want the responsibility; it's too much hassle, things can go wrong. What? You'd still like me to post it? Well I don't want to, but if you're willing to accept it if something goes wrong or it gets broken, then fair enough I suppose. Caveat emptor and all that. A more conscientious seller wouldn't even entertain that conversation, they'd just flat-out not post it. That was my point. Sort of.
Well that's fair enough. However you see quite a lot of ads that offer postage straight off the bat, but at "buyer's risk". That just puts me off straight away.

Prince has always been very aggressive in protecting his rights and is quite well known for doing so. I have some sympathy for the defendants but given that they are big enough Prince fans to want bootlegged recordings surely they should have been aware of his well publicised stance towards unauthorised distribution? Funnily enough, the fact that its so hard to find his stuff on places like youtube has actually put me off buying his music---his back catalogue is so huge that without some guidance I'm not going to bother trying to find out where to start!
That's interesting, although I'm having problems seeing how this could have been done with 60s technology. Have you got a source for this information? If you've read the specs for the new Moog Theremini you'll see that this has a control that adjusts the "accuracy" of the tuning from the traditional completely free pitch to rigid semi-tone steps.
I can't remember where I read it originally---I've read a lot of different books about The Beach Boys---but the Wikipedia page for "Good Vibrations" reckons that it was played on an Electro-Theremin or a "Tannerin" by Paul Tanner. its not actually a theremin at all, rather an attempt at sounding like one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electro-Theremin The Electro-Theremin, often called the Tannerin, is an electronic musical instrument developed by trombonist Paul Tanner and amateur inventor Bob Whitsell in the late 1950s to produce a sound to mimic that of the theremin.[sup][1][/sup][sup][2][/sup] The instrument features a tone and portamento similar to that of the theremin (or thereminvox), but with a different control mechanism. It consisted of a sine wave generator with a knob that controlled the pitch, placed inside a wooden box. The pitch knob was attached to a slider on the outside of the box with some string. The player would move the slider, thus turning the knob to the desired frequency, with the help of markings drawn on the box. The Tannerin doesn't actually sound much like the theremins of the time. The instrument was custom-built at Tanner's request. Tanner appreciated the theremin's sound, but wanted greater control of pitch and attack. The Electro-Theremin uses mechanical controls, a long slide bar for the pitch (analogous to the slide of the trombone that was Tanner's main instrument) and a knob to adjust volume. This contrasts with the hand movements in space that formed the original theremin's signal feature. The Electro-Theremin also produces a slightly less complex timbre than the original. This is not due to the nature of the instrument, but due to Dr. Theremin's intentional harmonic generation in the output of the Theremin, which Tanner did not do.
-
The theremins used on things like Good Vibrations were modified and had some kind of slide control to make playing in tune easier. I've always fancied one but know I'd get bored of making spooky noises after a while!!

I think the price at least partly reflects the fact that Nile really wanted an exact replica of the real thing. The original has huge sentimental value to him and in financial terms it must be worth a lot too. Reading his posts online about it it seems clear that he wants to retire the original but have a replacement that looks, feels, and sounds 100% like it. From Fender's point of view, I doubt they are too bothered about shifting too many of them. Its a marketing move---Nile Rodgers is very "in" right now and so linking themselves with him gets themselves a lot of publicity for not all that much outlay.

It could be many things but I suspect your grip is too tight. I used to get similar pain in my palm but lightening my grip helped.
I was tempted with the TRB 1006, did a bit of research but thought it was a bit steep even at £325. Now been relisted...Don't really need a six as well as 2 Fives...or do I?
I reckon £325 is a pretty decent price. I'd pay that for one, happily.
I haven't seen anyone TELL the OP what to do, only offer advice (backed up by experience).
Taking my post rather more literally than intended...

You really don't need a tech to change knobs. They normally just have a little grub screw to attach them! I really like these telecaster style ones: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-x-NEW-Vanson-Rounded-Screw-Knobs-for-TL-guitar-Chrome-Black-or-Gold-VS002-/120881725102?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&var=&hash=item1c251cbeae#ht_421wt_1161 You get similar ones, but with a dimple so that you can see where they are set.
